It's not a *bad* choice, but I'd still take my AR. Sure, you could also use the FAL to hunt larger game if you're in an area where you can. But even with an AR, you just need to switch out the upper.

well, generally speaking the FAL has better ergos and better recoil. The PTR beats it in mud or lots of sand. They have around the same options for mounting an optic, except with the PTR if you decide to get a picatinny rail top it has to be welded on, while with the FAL you can just get picatinny rail upper. It's honestly a personal preference thing, do you prefer a more refined gun or one that can take a ton of abuse? By abuse I mean outside fouling, not just shooting the gun.

Too heavy, poor accuracy, heavy round to carry, mediocre sights without DSA rail and an optic, and very long.

It's an antiquated rifle for a past time. I have several, but would never grab one as my first choice in an emergency situation (unless a herd of bulls were rampaging my parking lot).

The real accuracy issue is the change in pressure exerted on the bolt as the magazine empties. If you can account for that you're fine.

I'm inclined to go something 5.56 for the weight savings, both ammo and rifle. If I had to go .308, I'd go AR-10. I love bolt guns, think savage hog hunter, but that second shot ability is nice to have. Plus magazine commonality. Also, I know AR is the boring answer, but I can cheaply get quality parts to have on hand for replacements and or wear and tear.

In SHTF, the less complicated a gun is, the better

The rifle (and other battoru rifles in general) are heavy, overbuilt, needed magazines to work and ironically, flimsier than,say, single-shot gun.

In pure SHTF mode, I'd rather have something like break action shotgun. I can pretty much make a functioning one out of scraps

A G3 or clone of one would be less maintinence intensive as long as you don't plan on reloading your spent casings.
An AR10 would have more spare parts available.
An M1 "gur-raynd" or M14 would make you a god amongst fudds and old vets, They'll lay down their lives for you and swear unconditional loyalty.
A VEPR, PSL, Or Autonugget would make you a god amongst slavaboos who would surrender their trap boyhols to you instantaneously.
Then you have the FAL, Unless you intend on reforming the nation of New Rhodesia with your fellow faggots in short shorts there's better options out there. At least it has a crit bonus against ooga boogas.

Honestly, I think the worst thing about battle rifles is just the weight. Could you do it? Absolutely, but you are giving up extra rounds or equipment to do so.
On the other hand if you're fortifying your location and only going on short trips go right on ahead.

Battle rifles are too heavy mang, just get an AR. If you're planning on hiding out innawoods or basically anywhere where you're moving around a lot you'll grow to hate your FAL. The best SHTF guns are either mechanically simple guns like a shotgun (since you could literally make one from a pipe) or common guns with plenty of spare parts like a Glock or AR platform. That being said, a gun is better than no gun, and while the FAL is heavy and inaccurate, sending a powerful full-sized round down range does have its own merits.

you'll either have to buy one where someone have replaced the tritium vial already or converted it to LED, unless you feel like doing it yourself.
