It really blows that the Supreme Court is being relied on more and more to defend fundamental rights, but until we can really go on an offensive that's what we've got. I guess I'm struggling at the legal justification of this. I skimmed the decision, but they seem to cite Heller as not protecting long rifles, but DC v. Heller referenced United States v. Miller which held that one of the reasons the NFA was constitutional was because it didn't prohibit weapons that could be reasonably used in a militia.

I'm not a lawyer, so if any of you Anons are, I'd greatly appreciate any help trying to understand this decision.

The dissenters nailed it, the majority ruled that because heller left wiggle room to ban firearms not commonly used for lawful purposes and left it open to ban firearms that were excessively dangerous (citing firearms used exclusively for military applications).

The state argued that because the firearms had similar features to military firearms, and that since semi-automatic fire is preferred for an increased lethality... that the ban is justifiable in that the rifles have features that were marketed towards lethality and as such were excessively dangerous.
