j-comps on non-pencil barrels look gross

>>33076814
Just got into ARs and firearms in general.

This is the first rifle I see in the thread with the magpul handguard. Aesthetically, I prefer this look.

What's the appeal of the freefloat handguards that everyone else seems to use.

Not hating, just asking.

>>
>>33077890
>whats the appeal of the freefloat handguards
They make the rifle more accurate, depending on barrel thickness potentially by a humongous amount.

Side benefits are they can extend past the gas block to allow more options for gripping the thing, more options for sling and accessory placement, and flat-out more room. They also provide some extra protection for the barrel and gas block, and transfer less heat to your hand.
>>
I have a FSB i want to replace with a Low profile gas block so I can free float my handguard. Ive read a lot of gas blocks tend to fail because of set screws and what not. Im a noob to ARs and i dont really know the difference between gas blocks. It seems like .750 is the most common online, what the difference?
>>
>>33077874
>j-comps on non-pencil barrels look gross
why?
>>
>>33077911
>They make the rifle more accurate

Dare I ask, how so.

Also, first potential first rifle. I was thinking of the M&P S2, but I've heard good things about this:

http://www.brownells.com/firearms/rifles/semi-auto/ac-15-5-56x45mm-nato-16-mid-length-rifle-prod82606.aspx?avs%7cManufacturer_1=AERO%2bPRECISION

Is it worth the extra expense of the rear sight?
>>
>>33077938
M&P Sport 2 is what I have. It's a solid rifle at a good price. Aero Precision is really popular too. I don't think you can go wrong with either choice.
>>
>>33077868

>>
>>33077938
Anything touching the barrel affects its accuracy. Rest your handguard on a barrier? POI just shifted up.
>>
>>33077935
the comp tapers down to a diameter less then that of the barrels out side diameter. right after the gas block. it makes the brake look really thin. it's just my opinion
>>
>>33077978
We wouldn't have followed anyway, /arg/ isn't very keen on 8ch.
>>
>>33077978
got it I post a thread there.

time to migrate you all geneses
>>
>>33077984

I haven't had much experience with freefloats, but wouldn't the flexing of the freefloat guard affect accuracy as well?
>>
>>33077987
oh I see, I can understand that
>>
>>33077938
Anything that puts pressure on the barrel shifts the point of impact. Higher pressure, very hot barrels, and thinner barrels shift it potentially a LOT (20+ MOA), but it's normally a ~1 MOA shift.

Things like shooting off a bipod or over a barrier shift your POI compared to shooting offhand, shooting TOB will shift your POI from shooting magwell-grip, which will shift your POI from shooting chickenwing, etc.

Keeping anything from touching the barrel (freefloating) eliminates this entirely.

No, the free float only interfaces with the upper receiver, that's the point
>>
>>33078013
No because my pseudo-autism prevents me from doing so, as I'd like my tan memeotech to match with my stock, but I think green looks respectable on an AR
>>
>>33078032
Ohhh, ok. I was assuming one would still be using iron sights on a FF. If you have a scope, it's attached to the upper and that would keep the scope accurate.

I think I get it now.
>>
>>33076197
wow what a deal
>>
>>33078046
You can still use irons on a freefloat. Both ones attached to the freefloated handguard or ones attached to the barrel.

Just make sure that if you have them attached to the barrel that the handguard doesn't contact them, otherwise it's not actually freefloated.

Yes, irons attached to the handguard are in theory less precise than irons attached to the barrel. The overwhelming majority of people will use crude enough irons and practice infrequently enough that it won't matter.
>>
Anybody here regularly shoot steel cased through their AR?

I'm a poorfag and brass cased ammo is expensive here in Canuckistan. Been looking at bulk steel cased ammo.
>>
>>33076814
Is that the 3x prism scope? Have you noticed any issue with the eye relief when mounting it far forward enough to clear the MBUS?

>>33077890
Everyone calls them free-float hand guards, but the the important part is that you are free-floating the barrel at the same time. Which helps improve accuracy.
>>
>>33078104
newfag to guns here, is shooting steel cased corrosive or something?
>>
>>33078136
Theoretically steel wears harder on the internal components and doesn't seal the chamber as well leading to more residue inside.
>>
>>33078104
Yes.

Slightly more malfunctions and I get dogshit bad accuracy with it, but it goes bang.

>>33078136
No. Quality control sucks on it and if it's loaded with a bimetal-jacketed bullet it will wear your barrel out faster, but none of the 5.56 loads are corrosive.
>>
>>33078104
>>33078136
I do most of my 100 yard and in shooting with steel case, it's "bad" because it usually isn't copper jacketed so you have a harder metal running down your barrel at 3000fps which wears it out faster. that's probably true but your barrel life will still be beyond 5,000 rounds. barrels aren't that expensive to replace. most steel case ammo also has shit accuracy.
>>
>>33078155
and in general being under powered and shitty quality and dirty and it's not unusual to hear of some people's guns having trouble cycling it correctly
>>
There's an incredibly small crack in my upper receiver next to the star chamber. Should I be worried?
>>
>>33078136
It's not corrosive like surplus 7.62x39 or anything, but it's less accurate, and can apparently wear out your AR faster. The main appeal is lower cost. Not sure if the "Wear out your AR faster" part is fuddlore or not though.

I like my AR, but am having a hard time justifying the cost of ammo for what is basically a glorified hole puncher when I could have bought an SKS for $250 along with a fuck ton of cheap surplus ammo that the SKS was designed to shoot, and have probably just as much fun.

>>33078156
>>33078160
I guess the money saved buying steel cased would be enough to buy a new barrel if I ever shot my AR enough to wear it out.

Also, would the fixed sight post interfere with the sight picture of an eotech+magnifier?
>>
Price check on a DDM4A1 upper with the FDE RIS 2. Guy has one listed for $1150. Trying to decide if I should trade him a gun plus cash or a straight trade for a rifle.
>>
>>33078136
the additional wear is NEGILIBLE full stop.

for plinking under 100yds steel case particularly wolf is way to go.
>>
>>33078178
Eotech by itself yes, somewhat, unless you got an aftermarket mount to raise it to a lower-1/3 cowitness. With the magnifier the front sight tends to kind of fade out because it's inside the minimum focus distance.

>>33078172
Yes, several different places have done workups on barrel+extractor replacement schedule. You will always be financially ahead of the game shooting steel case, just gotta be willing to put up with the crappy accuracy and cold loadings.
>>
>>33078136
No it just puts wear on your rifle that a soft metal such as brass wont.

In all honesty tho most people shoot less than 2k rounds a year and it would probably take years before something broke.
One ofthere thing tho is that steel case is bottom of the barrel tier ammo and is not reliable, the steel can expand and get stuck in your rifle (been there) and the primers can suck ass and not fire (been there way too much). it's worth it in guns that were intended to shoot steel like an ak, but the ar-15 ammo being manufactured is garbage if it's steel.
Just suck it up and buy brass or start reloading, range brass flows like a river and is free.

the other good thing is they load it to lower velocities (less powder = less cost) so it's more gentle on steel targets. winchester white box 55grs and federal 55grs tear up steel targets pretty bad.

>>
>>33078178
A lot of people shoot with a red and a fixed front sight, the front sight post would obscure some of your view of course, but it shouldn't really hinder your ability to hit stuff. People usually line up the eotech sight with the front sight post.

>>33078205
I'm not super concerned about accuracy. All I do is go to the range like once a week and put holes in paper with my fucking $12 ammo. My AR is a $1000 hole puncher, really.

Wolf Polyformance 55gr FMJ: 2800fps from 16" barrel with 110fps SD
Wolf Military Classic 55gr HP: 2660fps from 16" barrel with TWO HUNDRED AND FORTY fps SD

Also I pulled a bunch of the Polyformance "55gr" FMJ's and none of them weighed over 51gr. Ranged from 48gr to 50.6gr out of the 25ish I pulled. Meanwhile my Hornady FMJBT-w/cann had an extreme weight spread of 0.2gr across 500 bullets.

God damnit you fucking zipper heads

So emailed gibbz about the issues I'd had before. They told me to send pics, which I did.
They then told me they think the barrel was installed "too tight"

Well the installation for the ALG emr will only line up if the barrel is tightened to the correct ftlbs, which I believe Bill said was around 30.

There's no fucking way that I did any more than that, and there's no way that 30ftlbs would be enough to bring the fucking barrel out of alignment. So I promptly and politely told them they were full of it, there's no way that's the case. The thing their rep cited was the feed ramps looked off, and they clearly aren't.

I'm gonna order a stripped upper on Friday, my replacement shims should arrive by then and I'm gonna try to swap uppers again, then ship the gibbz back and tell them to unfuck it

Teardrop or circle forward assist?
>>
>>33078191

>>
>>33078325
Take the barrel off and look again. Also check for damage to the notch it rides in in the upper. Barrels can torque during installation if you're doing something retarded or not using the proper tools, either bending the index pin or wallowing out its slot.

Did you use proper tools when torquing the barrel nut or did you do the poorfag "sit on it and pray while horsing on it" method?

50 yard zero is the best for a 1x optic. I'll fight anyone who preaches otherwise. For the most part it keeps you within 6 inches of your POI from point blank out to 300 yards. Holdovers beyond 300 become easy once known and practiced.

I zero my 1-4x optics at 50 as well. Generally only use a 100+ yard zero on high mag optics riding precision guns.

My hope would be to hog hunt with it but I'm not sure when the fuck that'll really happen

I'd use it as a joke for 2gun too if Okeechobee opened up the roster of rifles

I'm more concerned about liking the actual feel of the stock before a bit of wobble though, I'll put a stickynote on the tube if I need to fix it that badly

If the AR was somehow made to accept and eject magazines as if they were an en bloc clip like the Garand, would that still be considered a detachable magazine?
I was thinking about some system where the magwell was extended downwards, had the bottom filled in, and had a spring system, so that you could hinge the upper forward and push a cuck capacity magazine down in there and then put the rifle back together. Then when you hinge the upper all the way fowards it would eject the magazine out.

This could be an option for cuckifornians, as well as anyone who wants an AR Garand.

Not so much the 14.5" but the 14.5" with a middy gas. And not to be anal but that anon just said 14.5", he didn't mention anything about middy gas.

The only reason I can think of for doing a 14.5" with a midlength gas system is if you were trying to slow its cyclic rate as compared to a 14.5" with carbine gas. Which is a common goal of suppressor users since the suppressor increases the gas pressure. By going to a midlength gas 14.5" with a suppressor it should reduce the cyclic rate. as compared to the more common carbine gas 14.5"

as someone who actually owns and uses a suppressor. I can tell you from experience that shit is going to be over gassed no matter what you use for gas tube length. Its just how it is.

I want to support Team Wendy because they're local... But after inviting Hillary to tour their facility I just don't know.

Back from John Wick 2. It was awesome. Not nearly as awesome as the first one, but seeing Keanu Reeves throwing guns to the face of the guys trying to kill him and double tapping everyone in his way was fucking awesome.

Not because you are too smart but because your fucking water head is too big. You can blame your extra chromosomes for that.

Been over seas, never got exploded with it on, jumped out of a plane about 40 some odd times but well taken care of. I got an extra one from a buddy so i sold that one for funds. The bungees alone were 25 the ops core suspension system was 40 so you its a fucking steal for what hes asking

I need a front sight. Is there any real reason to buy the magpul pro over the regular plastic buis? Are are they essentially comparable? Or is there a better option?

If they were up your ass you'd know.

Post your address I have some pmags to send you.
>>
>>33081444
without costing twice as much?
>>
>>33081479
that not so much. the upside of mbus pro over standard mbus are that they are lower profile
>>
>>33081534

pretty much.

short post long: upgrading handguard on my shorter ar, so need to replace the a2 front sight. One option is to take the troy sights off the long barrel ar I have since I mostly use a scope on it, or buy another front sight. Don't really want to spend too much.
