Long story short,my dad left an old rifle (pic related) in a shed for the past winter and it's full of rust. Still fires but I want to know good way to get rid of rust
I read that rubbing vaseline on it for a few hours then wiping it down is good. Any thoughts?

Get an old rag and cover it in oil. Start rubbing all over the metal bits. Rub some more. Rub even more. Enjoy patina.

It's best not to remove rust unless it impedes the movement of a part. Apply grease/oil to prevent further rust.
