Funny enough, a Vietnam veteran brought that up with me once. He said that they captured plenty of AKs and ammo in combat, and a few guys had thought about using them for exactly the reason you cited (along with some of the reliability problems of early M16s). In the end, they decided against it, out of fear of attracting friendly fire. AKs make a pretty distinctive sound when they fire in full auto, and American troops tended to shoot in whatever direction that sound was coming from. In the end, it was more trouble than it was worth.

Makes the same noises as enemy weaponry, confusing friendlies.
No longer capable of differentiating whether a friendly is firing his 5.56, or a hadji is shooting his AK, now it all sounds the fucking same. Friendly fire abound.
