All of kojima's creative directors and weapons analyst wanted to keep the series grounded in some form of realism, that is why they kept him on such a tight leash for MGS4 with all the licensed weapons and believable metal gears. It was wacky.. but felt grounded.


The only people stopping Kojima from going full weeb left some time after Peace Walker came out, that is when he was given full "control" and went all out on Phantom Pain.

They even "fired" him for the mess he made by the end of it, and removed him from the credits. Then he bitches and tries to sue, and they are forced to add him back.

Ever wonder why at the beginning of every mission there is unskippable intro credits? That was them adding Kojima back to the games credits. Isn't it funny?!

God no. You're telling me an old man on the verge of death running through a microwave hallway and somehow surviving/being up to a fist fight afterwards is grounded? You can really tell that Kojima didn't want to make that clusterfuck with how disjointed everything felt. Where MGS3 excelled in making you feel like you were in a smoothly flowing spy/operator adventure, 4 failed in that it was essentially 30 minutes of gameplay per area with 2 hours of cutscenes that had 0 flow between them. Some parts like Shadow Moses were pretty cool, but overall the game felt more like five pieces of DLC stitched together than a complete game. For all of V's failings, it is better than 4 as a game.
