I want to know all about the AR, enough so I don't look like a total idiot at the gun shop. I want to know the good, average and bad brands, common mistakes, autistic details, finish types, magazine, everything. I am somewhat of a cheap fag so I am looking to build a AR that will survive the apocalypse and can customize the shit out of it if needed (but nothing too tacticool). I got a budget of around 3000$ leafmoney so around 2300 USD. Not too fancy about optics

I didn't know firing a gun was such a liberating experience, I feel like I've been missing out so much.
>>
>>33066999
Firstly don't listen to tripfags and don't visit /arg/

1. Make sure the gas key is properly staked
2. Make sure the barrel and bolt are mp/hpi tested

That is what makes a good AR.

This in all honesty.

Make sure the barrel is stamped for 5.56, can also shoot .223 that way.

If you have $3k not why buy a cheapie if it is your first, colt/m&p/bushmaster. You can buy extra mags and a fuckload of ammo to familiarize yourself with the platform. You won't learn more about it by assembling it from scratch than just cleaning/field stripping it.

don't get a gas one. they're heavy and meme-tier. get a di gun with a chrome lined barrel. get a colt 6920 and don't be a tightwad on this.

Your quest ends here, AP makes great guns in every price segment:

what's meme tier about gas pistons? i don't own an ar-15, just curious

Nothing, he is an idiot that needs to justify his purchase.

More parts easier to break.

>what's meme tier about gas pistons? i don't own an ar-15, just curious

Fucks with barrel harmonics and accuracy, taking away the AR15's biggest advantage over the A. Symmetric lockup, low pro gas blocks and free floated barrels are what makes ARs so great these days.
>>
>>33066999
>redpill
Go shoot an AK, then buy.
Objectively, the AR is a "better" gun. It makes sense for the military to issue it.

In practice, I bought an AR as my first modern intermediate caliber rifle, and found it makes my dick go soft.
AKs, on the other hand,I shoot better, control better, and find it more ergonomic. I'm not a military, and neither are you. Most of the ARs advantage aren't of real consequence for civilians.

Don't rush to a given platform withotu looking around.

>amagzines
Just buy magpul for an AR. Cheap and they work.
>>
>>33067165
Is the AR-15 A4 mp/hpi tested? Wanting to get one soon
>>
>>33067940
If you didn't know what mp/hpi testing was, would you care?
>>
>>33067954
Not really but now that I know, I'll be considering it
>>
>>33066999
Just buy one.

Any actual issues someone brings up on this thread will be vastly overshadowed by lack of skill and ability. The simple fact is that stupid things like bullet penetration, or velocity, or fall is not an actual issue for a civilian.
>>
>>33067940
I suppose you are referring to the Colt? Then yes. All Colt ARs are built to the TDP (except maybe the Expanse carbine)

Actually conformation to established memetypes, as vetted by hasguns canshoot trips and peer-reviewed by /arg/ bottomfeeders is what makes a good AR.

Posting that opinion outside of /arg/ to avoid conflict initiated by the incendiary counterculture nature of the remark is what is generally referred to as "faggotry."

Asymmetrical buffer tube erosion. Sheared locking lugs. And like the other guys said, heavier, less accurate, and more expensive to boot.

I've built a few AR's....
My first AR was a Striped Lower and PSA Assembled Upper with LPK bought the Stock and Buffer kit afterwards.
> Wasn't bad but I spent more money that I should

2nd AR was Anderson Manufacturing Stripped Lower $75, bought another PSA Freedom kit $400 with free s&h.
> One of the better deals I've done. Separated the barrel and the Upper Receiver, bought an Anderson Manufacturing Upper Receiver. Sold the PSA Receiver afterwards.

My latest build was for an SPR build... my most expensive build but I bought parts over time. I'll list everything in Part 2...
>>
>>33067305
There's a few ARs that have good piston systems. Namely, the HK416/mr556. Cheap ones are usually just a DI AR with a propriatary bcg and a piston crammed in it, which leads to the rifle basically chewing itself up. It's a neat idea but the companies that took the time to do it right also charge out the ass for fix to what is a non issue on a civilian gun.
>>
>>33069450
Part 2....

For my 3rd build I decided to go with a Spikes Tactical build. Very expensive so far, and still a work in progress.
> Spikes Tactical Stripped Lower
> Spikes Tactical Upper Receiver
> Ballistic Advantage 18" .223 Wylde SPR Stainless, Rifle Length gas, Premium Series
> Ballistic Advantage Gas Block/Tube
> Ballistic Advantage BCG
> Spikes Tactical Charging Handle
> Larue Tactical 12" Handguard
> Surefire 5.56 ProComp Muzzle Brake
> Spikes Tactical LPK minus trigger
> ALG Act trigger (replacing with a 2 stage trigger eventually)
> Magpul PRS Stock
> Magpul MIAD 1.1 Grip
> Magpul Enhanced Trigger guard
> AR15 A2 Rifle Stock Completion Kit (Probably going to replace spring and buffer with JP tuned)

Still need to buy Optics/Mount, Bipod/Mount, Sling. More than half way complete.

So far I have spent about $1200, which is about how much Spikes Tactical sells their Complete Rifles for.
> Lesson to take from this, I have more money than brains, jk jk
> Its customized to my liking and for my specific purpose SPR/DMR competitions
> I don't have too many leftover parts like I would have from a pre-built rifle
>>
>>33069504
I'd recommend a Larue MBT. Mine is very nice. I played with it a lot when I first got it, then I went shooting and put about 120 downrange.

Then I shot my AR with a milspec trigger and thought the safety was still on at first because of how hard it is.

I'd say there really isnt any difference between a spikes lower and an Anderson other than aesthetics and about $60. Only gripe I have with my andersons are that the anodizing on them is more of a dark grey and it's kind of rough, almost like parkerization. my PSA lower was black and very smooth.
>>
>>33069516
Shit, I didn't even realize Larue made a 2 stage trigger, I'll look into it. Thanks

And agreed, the Anderson anodizing is rather off putting, and rough.
I live in California so Stripped Lowers come and go. So its slim pickings.
For example right now Lowers that are available in my area
> Anderson Manufacturing
> ATI Omni Hybrid Polymer Lower
> Ruger AR 556
> POF P15
> Stag Arms Stag-15
> Lewis Machine and Tool Lower
> Spikes tactical (with various roll marks)
For like 2 years Turners was selling the Anderson Lowers cheaper than anyone else in my area. They use to carry Mega Arms and Aero Precision. But guess they stopped selling them.

>>

This

quality starter ARs for the average shooter is around $700-800 USD, and I mean like high quality starters.
The only reason you'd spend any more is if you have nothing better to do other than shooting thousands of rounds a week and/or is a frequent 3gunner and you take it seriously.

Literally just get an Anderson/spikes/PSA/anyfuckingthingthatyoulike stripped lower and put a decent lower parts kit in it.
Buy/build and upper that has a good barrel in it and buy a MPi/hpt bcg and you're golden.

It's so much cooler to know that you have built your first firearm.
