So tomorrow I start testing for a dispatcher position for my local PD. Hopefully this will be a foot in the door because I really want to be a police officer and always have wanted to be ever since I was a little kid. Tomorrow might just be the day I take that first step into the career I have longed for, for my entire life. I'm not really nervous but...curious as to what will happen. I have almost no idea what to expect so any of you guys a dispatcher or used to be one? Tips? Advice? Things you wish you could tell your younger self?

Also, Law Enforcement Officer General I guess.

You're doing job research outside of /k/, right?
>>
>>33066515
>not finding a way to make it LEGO
>>
>>33066515
how fast can you type? can you speak clearly under stress? do you know your area (geographically) well?
>>
isn't that the super stressful job with long hours, little support from supervisors, and no recognition?
>>
>>33066570
Of course. I had a job over the summer that introduced me to a lot of great contacts i.e. sheriff's deputies, city police officers, prominent business owners in the area. I even met the sheriff of a different county and had a great talk with him. He said that if i need anything, to give him a call. I have been doing a lot of research rest assured.
>>
Corrections officer for a sherrif's department here.
Currently in school for criminal justice doing Academy soon.
Feels good lads. Time to start picking out a duty pistol.
>>
>>33066635
find out if a department around you has a citizens academy or citizens patrol type of program.
>>
>>33066578
Son of a bitch. What an opportunity wasted.

>>33066616
I actually type fairly fast and the few high stress situations i have been in, I have found out that my voice can get a little shaky but i imagine that will go away with time plus not being there with the person and talking to them over the phone will help. And yes I have lived in the area I'm in all my life but as luck would have it, the area I'd be working in i know less well, but still well enough.

>>33066633
I don't want to become a cop because of the fame or glory mane.
>>
>>33066578
That's it. I'm changing the name to /LEGO/ - Law Enforcement General...Ovary?
>>
>>33066661
I mean there's always being a reserve officer but I'm not sure what that entails. There's also a discovery program if anyone knows what that is.
>>
>>33066690
>I have found out that my voice can get a little shaky but i imagine that will go away with time
this could be a problem but im sure they will see if they have you take mock calls and they can judge you from there.

desu tho if being a LEO is your end goal dispatching might not be your best bet. they wont want to train someone (which takes a while most places) just to have you leave.

>I don't want to become a cop because of the fame or glory mane.
hes talking about being a dispatcher. which everything he said is true.
>>
>>33066749
> they wont want to train someone (which takes a while most places) just to have you leave.
I'm only 19 so I'd be there at least for two years if not longer. The only reason I didn't get a job at the local jail is because it is ridiculously sub-par in regards to...well everything.
>>
>>33066748
>reserve officer but I'm not sure what that entails
it will vary depending on where you are. look on your departments website and it will explain. that is a great way to get some experience and make connections to help you become a fully commissioned leo.

>>33066899

a lot of departments require a degree for specialty units (think k9, marine, detectives) so they support and sometimes help pay for degrees. the hiring process is pretty long most places then you have the academy that is normally at least a few months long. during the academy you wont have time for school so you'd have to put it on pause.
>>
>>33066925
>>33066950
Shit. I want to finish 2 years of my degree then enlist. But I don't want to sit on my ass for two years just going to school. I want to get into public service, but I don't know how the workload with school would work.

It always breaks my heart to hear that another one dies. I think about 3 or 4 months ago, a deputy in a neighboring county was responding to a domestic and when he pulled up, the guy was waiting for him in his garage with a gun and shot the officer as he got out of his cruiser. It's a damn shame.

get an easy job while you finish your degree so you dont have a huge work history gap, enlist and when you get out it will be pretty easy to become a leo. mil preference points help a lot

I legit teared up. I heard about it, and there was a memorial at city hall tonight.

Funny, I just listened to a "sword and scale" podcast about this today. It sounded like it might be stressful, but pretty fulfilling until they played the tape of Brandi Worley who killed her two kids, and then called after she couldn't kill herself.

Couldn't fucking do it without losing my shit. I can take a lot of shit, but kids get to me.

OP here, as I said before, I worked a job over the summer where I made some good connections. Not only did I make connections, I made some good friends that are deputies. I got to become pretty good friends with this one deputy. Really was a great guy. Funny, no nonsense, and he was old school. Just a good ole country boy. He had a heart attack a week or two after i saw him last. Really freaking sucks.

dont think that, shit is extremely emotional. i dont care what edgy fags have to say about it. you will see the hardest dudes tearing up during the speeches and bag pipes.

>>33067171
>He had a heart attack a week or two after i saw him last.
sorry to hear that. have you been on a ride along? if not i would definitely go on one. most departments allow 1 every 6 months or 1 a year. go to every department you can and ask a lot of questions to the officers.
>>

I'm going to try and google it to find it if you can't but gotta quick link on hand to save a brotha some time?

What kind of qualifications do you need to even get into LE? Every time I ask anons they say
>a pulse and a clean record for big city
>a pulse, clean record, and slightly fit for anything smaller
>>
>>33066515
It's not a super high-tier career like everyone is making it out to be. Just be physically fit, not a total social retard, not a logistical retard, and get bonus points for having military experience or a college degree. You get a great salary, a great pension, an early retirement, and the respect of the general community at large. It's wonderful. Just make sure to always give your best, never get discouraged, never be petty, and always remeber: others may hate you, but those who hate you don't win unless you hate them, and then you destroy yourself. Keep your town safe anon. You'll be great. I believe in you.

*Dispatcher (fucking burner phone)
>>
>>33066515
Depends on how your PD runs its dispatch. Different PDs will have different policies and Comms setups. General advice, learn your city, if needed learn any other major second language spoken in your area.
>>
>>33067917
They're not that far off.

The minimum for most entry positions is just
>graduate high school
>have clean record
>have a driver's license if you're expected to drive places on the job

They're pushing towards degrees for higher positions and so they can say "Look, our people have college degrees!", but that's still going to take some time to go into effect.

Military/security/related fields is a plus. You can enter with any degree, not just a criminal justice degree. Honestly, it's probably smarter to get a degree in something else so if you don't get in or decide not to pursue LEt anymore, you got options instead of being stuck with a one-field degree.

>t. someone with criminal justice degree
>>
Are polygraph tests bullshit or do they actually work?
>>
Any recommendations for a good PD that doesn't require a degree or prior experience, where I can make a livable wage? Preferably where the chances of being on TV are low.

Literally any state, it does not matter.
>>
>>33066749
>>33066808

nonsense, lots of local cops start off as dispatchers. Many also start off as detention officers. In fact the only people who generally stay dispatchers or detention officers are the ones who can't make it in to or through the academy.
>>
>>33070074
There are a lot of law enforcement agencies dude. I would try going and doing ride alongs in smaller towns/counties. In my experience, it helps immensely to have an "in" for the department. It's how I got my job.

My coworker has no degree or experience but he had a good friend that worked there who got him hired. Now he has been through the academy so a lot of doors are open for him. (In my state you have up to 1 year from your start date with a department to go to the academy, which your department has to sponsor you.)

In my state, since it's mainly small towns, being certified is big and will make you top pick for most agencies, For the bigger ones you probably still need some sort of degree.
>>
>>33066950
>honestly .mil experience or being a reserve is the best way to go
This

>>33066899
>Is it hard trying to finish a degree while being an LEO?
It all really depends on your schedule. Oddly enough crappy work schedules (night shift with tues/wed off is a lot of time more accommodating to a school schedule than day shift mon-fri. It can be done, just don't plan on being a full time student. I've been picking away at my degree for a few years but other life events like having kids and whatnot have got more in the way than my work schedule.
>>
>>33069061
They are not 100%, which h is why they can't be used in court by the prosecution. It can be helpful though. Some departments use voice stress analysis for recruits.
>>
I am pursuing a degree in criminal justice. Plan to try working for the DOJ, ICE, or FBOP. Want to be a cop while I earn my degree.

How important is networking in law enforcement? I understand some members of law enforcement are very public and have social media, where as others are off radar and conceal their identity.
>>
Is military a good career to do for a couple years and then join a police force when you're old enough? (23+)
>>
>>33068510
There isore to it than just being able to say, "Our officers have degrees."

Educated officers receive less complaints.
People who have studied at Universities are usually exposed to different ideas and cultures they wouldn't have otherwise.
One officer who spoke to our CJ class STRONGLY recommended to people that wanted opportunities for advancement to major or minor in business or accounting. They can be much more useful and desirable degrees for a lot of jobs within the department. Just think, if you are actually running or managing part or all of a police department, it is a lot like managing a business.
>>
>>33070414
Oh, and I know in Alabama that officers automatically start out at a higher salary if they have some sort of degree.
>>
Rookie officer here reaching my two year mark on the job as a leo. I worked security at a college pd before going thru an academy and graduating with a bachelor's.

My advice, which you've probably heard a thousand times before:
-Experience in criminal justice is a huge plus. Being a dispatcher will help you get your radio ear and be competent on the radio.
-You don't know everything, always be open to learn, because you learn from those with 15+ years. Listen to them and make good relationships.
-Never lie. You'll instantly be sacked and never work in this field again. No matter how little.
-Be optimistic and present yourself as a valuable asset, but also a "blank slate". Bring new ideas, but learn how they teach you (very important in fto)

Wish you the best man, just do your best and never second guess yourself. This job is about confidence, people skills, street smarts, and knowledge of the law. Those four will come with time, experience, and training.
>>
>>33066899
Yes. I'm a former Deputy and now disabled. I went to school in my time off but occasionally got called away for stuff. Now I'm finishing my degree off my pension.

Copfag here.
For those of you interested, don't fall for the criminal justice Meme, it's a minor at best.

The only people who care about your specific degree are the feds. Criminal justice classes don't carry over into real police work because you'll forget everything useful by the time you actually get hired.
