Let me guess, you got it off of Coleman military surplus for $40 dollars. Wouldn't blame you, lasts much longer than the other college and hiking bags I've dealt with.

Also
>no poncho
>no rain tarp
>no sleeping bag roll or wool blanket roll
>no water filter pills or pump

Well I'll admit I'm lucky in the respect that my wife can see the value in being prepared.

In your case I'd simply do what I did, find as many lists and infographics as you can, put something together, tweak it, change it post it and get it critiqued. Then you should end up with a list you are happy with and works for you and your situation.

My car "get home bag" designed for a two day hike at the worst is 120l. Pic related.

If you are careful with the equipment you pick and don't mind living with a few less luxuries then you could definitely get it down smaller than 120l

Primary purpose is to keep entire family going for 2-3 days whilst stuck in car or for me to walk the two day trip home. What is not required will be left. My trail pack looks very different and is ~60l

Get a couple of these and lots of spare flints. You can light many things with them. The cup is designed to capture a bit of welding gas or LP when lighting a torch, but also works for other fuels like a bit of cotton dampened with fuel.

Hahahahaha holy shit.

Son my 85L pack isn't even full (tightens down really well) when I do 9 days on the wilderness doing manual labor and burning 6000 calories/day. At the start of a hitch I'm carrying 25lbs of the most calory-dense foods I can find. My crew averages 60-100 miles in that 9-day period.

If you need a 120L pack for 3 a fucking day bugout I'm pretty skeptical that you've ever actually lived out of a backpack or done any serious miles in one.
>>
>>33060946
> how about you could rate my bugout bag
It would help if you actually gave us info about your bug out plan and location you know.

Bag out bag is supposed to get you from point A to point B, how are we supposed to rate it when we don't know what's in-between?

>Mil-tec assault backpack
It's little more chinkshit, their products are very low quality.

>40l
Just how long is the disctance between your home and your bug out location? 40l would be more of a 3-day pack.

>small medkit with various of antiseptics
Such as?

>includes alcohol like vodka
I wish thi meme would die. Alcohol is a terrible antiseptic. Yes, it does kill germs, while also immedietaly burning your skin with the risk of swelling and nasty inflammation.

Throw this shit out. You don't use alcohol to treat wounds unless there are literally no alternatives whatsoever, period.

>shemag
Can't hurt, can be useful.

>flint and steel with cotton balls and vaseline to act as a fuel , + normal fire lighte
Cotton balls with vaseline are not fuel, they are fire starter.

>old bundeshwer canteen with cooking pot , small and comfy
I don't see any food on your list, not even water/tea/coffee/etc.

What exactly are you going to cook then? Please don't tell me you are actually thinking about getting the food on the way.

>luminescent sticks , about 5
I don't see the point, but it can't hurt.

>maglite flashlight 4d led
Nothing wrong here.

>hygiene handgel and small pack of wet tissues
It's actually really nice you thought about hygiene, a lot of people underestimate how much of a factor this is.

>whistle
What for? Bringing attention to yourself? What's the point?

>camp shovel
I'm not a fan of full size shovel in bug out bags.

Are you really going to do so much work with it as to justify carrying a rather large and heavy thing like this?

>2 folding knifes , one is just for everyday use and its opinel , second is rescue knife from herbertz aisi
Nothing wrong with knives.

con.
>>
>>33063708
>40l would be more of a 3-day pack
That's what a big out bad is, a three day bag.
>>
>>33061100
>>33061113
>>33061134

Overall pretty good but you need a water bottle/canteen. A backup bladder is good but if both puncture you're fucked. Buy a 1L Nalgene widemouth for ~$10, wrap it in duct tape and you've got a secure backup that won't break, and that's a standardized, bombproof water container that an absolutely massive amount of outdoor accessories are designed to work with.
>>
>>33063776
Well as I said the second bladder is for my wife but yes I'll look at a lightweight canteen.
>>
>>33060946
>>33063708
Why is there no food and water on your list? They are the most crucial things you can have.

How exactly do you imagine going from point A to B without it? Especially if we assume it's a long way, considering you chosoe a 40L pack.

You have a cooking set and and a shovel, but again, if the distance is considerable and you will need to camp and sleep during the night, why is there no sleeping mat? Why no sleeping bag? Why no tarp?

And if the distance is not that great and you can make it it one day without any sleep, what do you need a 40l pack for? What do you need a full size shovel for?

You have a firestarter, but where is your fuel? Are you assuming you will use wood you find on the way? What if it's raining and it all gets wet?

Overall I would say you have almost no idea what you are doing, you don't hike and never actually made the trip from your home to your bug out location with that bag.

>>33063747
No, not necessarily. A bug out bag is supposed to get you from point A to B safely. If the trip is 3 days long then yes, a bug out bag should be a 3 day pack. If it's not, it shouldn't.
>>
>>33063829
If you are having to travel more than 3 days to your bug out location you should be caching food and supplies along the way. Carrying a 100-150lbs pack just because your trip is longer than three days is unnecessary
>>
>>33063935
>If you are having to travel more than 3 days to your bug out location you should be caching food and supplies along the way
You can get the water provided there are actually multiple water sources laong the way, but OP didn't list a water filter.

Food is a whole different thing. How exactly are you going to find a reliable source of food on a 3 day trip?

Hunting? You shouldn't be wasting time on that.

Collecting plants? Not nutritious.

Scavenging and/or robbing other people? Unecessary risk and a waste of time, not to mention the morality of it.

Food for a 3 day trip is not that heavy, especially not if you pack high-calorie hig-protein food such as trail mix.

>Carrying a 100-150lbs pack just because your trip is longer than three days is unnecessary
But a full size shovel and vodka are more vital than food and water? I never even advised such ridiculous weight.

Your priorities are all over the place. Food and water and vital and relying on getting them along the way is unreliable no matter how you cut it. You are preparing to minimize the risks to begin with.
>>
>>33064045
Oh boo completely agree with that, there is a lot of unnecessary shit in there that's a given, food and water should be an absolute priority. I'm simply saying you don't need a massive ruck as a BoB. A 40L will do just fine as long as you are putting the right things in it.

I'm not op I'm not the guy that posted that, my list was above. Hopefully op will be able to take some information from this thread and streamline his ruck.

You mean >>33061100 >>33061113 >>33061134?

I don't see much wrong with it, seems like you actually put a decent amount of thought into it.
>>
>>33063806
You and your wife should each have a backup bladder AND a bottle/canteen. You can leave the backup bladder empty but a punctured bladder + no backup = dehydration.
>>

Empty bladders weigh basically nothing and take up almost no space, they're also cheap as hell.

As someone who's dealt with the experience, it's not fucking fun to have a bladder puncture while you're relying on it. A 1L bottle is a nice backup but also a huge pain in the ass when you're trying to burn miles with weight on you back and it's suddenly your sole source of water.

As far as failure points and redundancies go there's not much reason to bring a backup, especially since you're here, meaning you're planning for the worst.

>food supply, either canned or readily cookable with the equipment you have.
MREs are kinda dumb for how much space they take up IMO
>water purification tablets.
always good to have multiple ways of getting clean water.
>sleep system
I personally use a USGI poncho liner because it weighs almost nothing, insulates well and my area doesn't get cold enough to warrant anything else.
>extra socks, underwear, and shirts
staying clean and dry is important to stay warm
>camp axe
this is only really useful if your shovel can't chop saplings and small wood in general. it's good for making a survival shelter or procuring firewood.
>paracord and camp stakes
you can combine them with a poncho to make a quick rain shelter.
>duct tape
lets you patch holes in any waterproof equipment you half or as a general purpose fastener.
>weapons cleaning kit
>sharpening stone for your knives
>mess kit

Well good for you Private Calory,

I am city corporate and have kids, and a wife and work 70hrs per week. I get to go camping maybe 3 times per year and hiking maybe twice a year. I also drive more miles per month than most do in a year. The bag is car/comfort focused. Has been used plenty of times to great effect during road closures, breakdowns etc.

Did you miss the part where I literally work and live out of a backpack professionally?
You're the one who posted
>lol 40L is TOO SMALL I use a 120L pack for 2 days' worth of supplies

An 85L backpack is absolutely enormous. Most people I work with use 65-75L packs. My 85L is almost never full and I prinarily use it because unlike most excessively huge packs it actually tightens down enough that it retains its weight distribution when not full.

It's nice if you've got a niche for your pack but it's REALLY not suitable for anything other than what you use it for (which sounds line in-vehicle storage for temporary emergencies that don't require hiking). And, considering its use, it's pretty fucking stupid for you to drop into threads telling people that their packs (which are much more intended for experiences like mine than yours) are unsuitable.

The average /out/ poster has far, far more relevant knowledge and experience than you do on this subject, and they're mostly retards who don't camp just like most of /k/ doesn't own guns.

Got the same bag for the same purpose. It hasn't ripped or anything but judging how the seams look i don't trust it as a BOB so i replaced it with a cheap semi modern milsurp bag.

But for the price i can't really say it looks bad, will use it a camping bag instead.

Does your multi tool not have a can opener or something?

Not him but I carry both a Leatherman and a P51
The P51 is just too conventient and lightweight to not bring along. WAY better and any multitool can opener I've used.

Honestly I'd say drop the giant flashlight, swap it out for a headtorch, it may not be as powerful but it'll be hands free and give you more flexibility.

+ for headlamp
Also there's almost no situation where you wouldn't want an LED light. They're FAR more lightweight, they're bright as fuck, and their power draw is so much lower it's hilarious

No, I see from your posts exactly why you have to live out of a backpack.

Op did not even mention food in his list. It was assumed that he may not have had lightweight professional gear. I had a 40l pack and when packing regular gear, could fit fuck all in it.

Chill out Rambo

This is what I've had with my at all times the past year or so. No I don't wear it all the time, but it goes in my locker at work, in whatever car I'm driving or riding in, when I go innawoods for hiking with the doggo, it's accessible to me at all times.

Not really a "bug out" bag, but I keep things in it that I use everyday, and things I may need if I spend the night anywhere un-planned. It's on the heavy side, but I'm having a hard time parring down from what I currently carry.

first aid trauma kit
2 sets of fresh batteries for each of my flashlights
1 set of fresh batteries for my headlamp
back up battery for cell phone (6000mAh)
wall charger for cell phone
car charger for cell phone
80' 550 cord
compass
multi-tool
fixed blade knife
complete change of clothes (I'll pack even more socks if I'm doing longer hikes)
work gloves
warm liners for gloves
winter hat
shemagh
work shit like keys, earpiece, pens
level 3 ballistic plate

All of this fits in a 35L bag with some room to spare. It is heavy, but so far the bag and straps have been handling the weight very well, its a red rock assault bag I got at cabelas. Only negative is people always ask If I'm military because of the flag patch, no not military just love our country.

I like quick energy and electrolytes as much as the next guy anon but you're gonna want some protein sooner or later.

Peanut butter and Gatorade powder will take you a LOT further than instant ramen.

quick note . i wanna also buy some gas mask , should i ? and of course need to buy those puryfying tabs
>>

I just had an idea - pre-cooked lasagna noodles. Anon in a previous thread had precooked spiral noodles which inspired me. I like noodles and ramen but there's a lot of air space in the package. Lasagna noodles stack flat. It's like wafers of carbs.

image is failing to upload so just imagine it
>>
To all shtf preppers. Get saftey pins. Lightweight and can buy used for repairing clothes in a jiffy. Literally why not it adds no weight to your pack but are incredibly useful
>>
>>33078390
People always think this.

No, you don't need a gas mask. Unless you're planning on shaving during shtf it's gonna be worthless anyway. Personally, I have enough beard after 3 days that a gas mask won't seal.

If you're worried about gas or whatever get a 3M half-mask respirator and goggles. But seriously you won't need it and it probably won't work if you do need it.

Milsurp gasmasks are highly likely to have shitty expired asbestos filters, and current issue ones are pretty expensive for an item you won't need.

tl;dr Save that shit for Halloween

>Are ramen noodles GOAT SHTF food?
Might as well just pack lots of sugar and salt packs from the local burger joint.^

Nuts, legumes and seeds either whole or refined into oil/butter is the way to go. Lots of carbs and protein. Just peanut butter, instant coffee and some kind of sports drinks powder is going to work good if you don't have time to stop and cook.

Yeah but unlike MRE or other prepper food peanut butter is good for everyday eating so you can just eat that can and replace it each year.

I wouldn't be surprised if it would last longer then a year to.

I have a question, kinda linking back to what the other guy said regarding food. What is a good way to make a home made MRE?

I'm thinking:
>Same level of calories
>More compact
>Good nutrition, not a sodium infused cluster fuck
>Reasonably priced in comparison to a $22 MRE

Does anyone have any suggestions of like full MRE level meals rather than just the PB and trail mix.

sorry OP I tried to read the thread but I bailed, just too much stupidity (well except for >>33078720)

what you probably want is a go-bag, something that will cover about a week's worth of going from A to B in a time of crisis (personal or otherwise)

water storage (5 liters at least, 3-liter camelbak a must)
water filter, water disinfectant tablets
lighters, safety matches
personal hygiene items (don't forget the nail clipper)
very lightweight pair of shoes, such as sneakers (because you ARE wearing combat boots at all times, yes?)
trauma pack, antihistamines, antibiotics, antiemetic, AINS, aspirin, alcohol, gut disinfectant, antidiarrheic, cotton wool, iodine tabs if you live within 50mi of an NPP
tarp/poncho
paracord
survival foil
sleeping kit (depending on the climate in your region you may skip this)
high-calorie dry food (this means trail mix bars, pemmican, peanut butter, honey and ohter such things)
spare socks and briefs
two knives, flint, sharpening stone
multitool
mirror
watch
two compasses, both with loupes and sextants
lantern with a red filter
this covers the very basics

nice to have items include
- paper map
- hand-crank radio
- solar panels, hand-crank generator and charger/electrical storage for same
- smartphone
- e-ink reader stuffed with maps, survival books, 2d porn and good escapist literature
- weed
- a "coffin" tent
- extra clothes
- nv monocular with head-mount (THIS REQUIRES TRAINING TO USE, PLAN ACCORDINGLY)

my advice is to standardize on USB C by the way, it's very nice to not have to guess the correct orientation in the dark

For those of you talking about bladders, a trick I used on my second deployment after busting like 5 bladders on my first deployment was to fill the bladder and then wrap it in duct tape. It was ghetto but seemed to do the trick because I went like 8 months with that same bladder like that and it never busted. I'm not saying it's not ghetto or that it's the ultimate solution, I'm just saying it worked for me.
Also, +1 for having a backup nalgene bottle.

well . now that you mention it . got another question . i also have in my closet a bigger backpack . the foreign legion backpack .desc. says it has 110 L capacity . would it be overkill to swap it up ?
>>
>>33080858
110L's REALLY big.

The issue is that a lot of pack lose their ability to distribute weight well unless they're fairly full. This depends on design and how well you understand ideal weight distribution obviously but depending on those two factors you could find yourself either having a really bad time or bringing a ton of shit you don't need.
