If you just want M14-ery and to look at it or fingerfuck it every now and then, sure. If you shoot it regularly it will fuck up. Now, since you're already spending almost halfway to a M1A, why not just bite the bullet and go all the way? They're good rifles for the price, but they're generally more of a "project gun" that people tweak. Most of the hate is from early production that generally did have issues, but have now been resolved. Americans don't get the new stuff do to the ban which accounts for most of the hate, as well as nostalgic autism for "muh murrican made em4teen"..

A lot of hate is coming from Americans with only knowledge based on the old ones they have in their country.

The newer production ones are actually pretty good. They work out of the box mostly, but they're definitely project guns. Check the headspacing, replace the op rod guide with a USGI, and the sight adjustment sucks, so get USGI sights. Other than that, there's a ton of other stuff you can do to increase precision, and they have a lot of aftermarket stock options. Just remember it'll be a boat anchor if you're not careful. I would suggest upgrading to a USGI fiberglass stock if you want to save a half a pound, or put it in a Blackfeather stock if you wanna support a Canadian business and add a negligible amount of weight.

Go for it. Fun option for around $600 Beaver Bucks.
