Most recent acquisition is this Remington M1903. All correct parts, save for the upper handguard and trigger guard.

Receiver dates to June of '42.

You aren't going to shoot it that much to destroy the barrel.
>>
>>33061237
I don't understand.

>>33060826
Cast lead bullets are supposed to be pretty great, but I haven't used them personally. I might in the near future, though. Just to load some fun rounds.

How much? I saw a jew mauser at Dunham's for $500 about a year ago that was in that condition.
I offered the manager $300 for it and he looked confused. Said "our prices aren't negotiable". I told him they would never sell it at that price.
It's still there.

>>33060441
Bought this a few days ago, not in a position to judge anyones life choices!
>>
>>33061353
>How much? I saw a jew mauser at Dunham's for $500 about a year ago that was in that condition.
Yeah, about half of the Israeli Kar.98k in the States took a detour though Guatemala (or was it Belize) and look it.
>>
>>33061288
If I shoot 250 rounds a year through a barrel that's good for 20000 rounds, I'll have shot it out in 80 years, then my grandkids will have to inherit a shot out rifle
>>33061302
I do hope you share your experience with lead bullets
>>
>>33061353
It was $179 on J&G
Also, how to clean it? Apparently no mineral spirits in California. Would paint thinner work or would that be harmful to the bluing?
>>
>>33061388
That's why you don't shoot it that often. You won't, because we all have lives and if we don't we have multiple guns.
>>
>>33061427
>Also, how to clean it?

Honestly I'd just wipe it down with some Ballistol to get the dirty and grime off the wood and the metal, then put some gun oil on the metal and some linseed oil on the wood. Don't refinish it. Just clean it.
>>
>>33061324
Well, yeah. Most countries did.

That's why it's noteworthy that the rifle is almost correct. I guess I should've also said that the rifle has no refurb marks. The hanguard is a '30s SA, and the trigger guard is also likely SA. Likely civilian replaced somewhere along the way.
>>
>>33061465
I don't want to refinish it, I just want to get all that grease out of the action. Also Should I have the headspace checked? I mean they advertise these ones as shooters so it should be ok right?
>>
>>33061431
I guess my point is that even with light use, the barrel will wear out eventually, and I really want to shoot my guns and keep them in good shape. Maybe I could reline the bore like people do with old broom handles when it gets too bad
>>
>>33061492
>I just want to get all that grease out of the action.
then your usual gun cleaning solvent (Hoppes #9, whatever) should do the trick just fine. might have to clean it several times to get all of it out.

>Also Should I have the headspace checked?
certainly not a bad idea, and shouldn't cost much at a gunsmith.
>>
>>33061388
I will if I go through with it.

Someone I know told me that a 165gr cast bullet on 14 grains of trail boss is a really fun light load for .30-06. I'd like to try that for dicking around with.
>>
>>33061529
>14 grains of trail boss

Holy crap. Calling that a light load is a massive understatement. I use around 60 grains of 4350 in my .30-06 reloads.
>>
>>33061492
>Also Should I have the headspace checked?
You'll learn just as much, if not a lot more by firing the gun once and inspecting the spent case.
>>33061519
The problem is finding an actual gunsmith, not a "gunsmith."
>>
>>33061519

Really light. He says almost no recoil, so I may experiment some and bump it up a little. I like at least some punch. I think it'll throw a 165gr bullet about 1100-1200fps.

Anyway, story I guess.

>Served in the Navy
>Ended up wealthy in real estate
>As a result, has asshole entitled children
>Who don't like guns, or him for that matter
>I do some work for him around his place, and one day he shows me his guns

>Tell him how cool the rifle is, and tell him some things about it
>My [limited] knowledge seems to impress him, but I think nothing of it

>>
>>33061388
if you can afford the 20,000 rounds of rifle caliber ammo, you can afford the $50-200 for a new barrel

the only guns you should be concerned about shooting are ones that have such a high money value they cant be replaced. and even then, the barrel is not going to be the first part that wears or breaks and destroys the value

disassemble all metal components, soak in solvent of your choice, scrub with toothbrush/rags, light super fine steel wool if surface rust. oil and reassemble. congrats, after a couple days of work you increased the value of your gun by $20. such is life of milsurp collecting

Thanks. I'm going to check the headspace on it before I fire it, as the bolt doesn't match. Debating between taking it to a smith or just ordering the gauges myself. I was worried at first because it took me about two hours and every technique I could find to get that front band off (you can see the ring where it was lodged), and I had to take a knife and scrape some wood out for the retaining spring to properly function, but things went smoothly from there.
>>
Thinking about a Mauser. How are M48s? I hear they're a bit gritty compared to better Mausers and get sticky bolt like nuggets. The prices are still reasonable right now(300-400), but aside from that are they excellent rifles? I wouldn't mind paying a bit more for a yugo K98 or even going up to an original K98 if I ever had the patience.

Or perhaps I should hope I can find a great M39 for a fair price without killing myself.

I'm torn between a P-08, Mauser, or another M39 as my next purchase. Lugers are 100% on my list, but aren't really going up, so I can put that back if need be.

Just picked up my K31 today. Got a troop tag in mine, yay!

Then when I tried to put the buttplate back on I found that it wasn't lining up flushly with the wood, so that there's a little gap at the bottom. Is this normal/fine? I don't want the trooptag getting damaged by water or something.

Also one of the screw holes had some kind of fucking wood thing inside of it, I guess the screw hole was stripped and someone (maybe the original guy) put some wood chips in there so the screw would have something to grab on to. It kinda fell apart when I took it out and the screw was loose, but I put a broken up toothpick in there and it seems alright now. Anyone else ever have to do it?

Sticky bolt is not a cosmoline issue. Burs in the bolt head, tool marks in other contact surfaces in the bolt, bowed extractors, and rough chambers cause it in addition to cosmoline.
>>
I've got a line on a 1898 Krag-Jorgensen for $1,000. Should I go for it? I can probably get it for less than that, if I talk to the right guy.
>>
>>33067082
>Sticky bolt is not a cosmoline issue.

I can vouch for that. I disassembled and boiled my bolt to remove the cosmoline, then used heat, solvents, and power tools with rags to remove it from the chamber.
After spending days removing every molecule of cosmoline I oiled everything up and put it back together and it still feels like pounding a square peg into a round hole when I work the bolt.
I rarely shoot the piece of shit anyway. It gets 8 inch groups at 100 yards. I'd rather shoot any number of my other milsurp guns and get 1 to 2 inch groups all day.

The US importers cut up a lot more No1s to make carbines and called them jungle carbines. Some of these were rechambered to .308 and are not safe to fire.

So here's the update on my J&G Mauser...

It arrived with my FFL a few days ago, and today I went to go see it for the first time. Mine is a 7mm version, manufactured in Oviedo in 1932, making it exactly 85 years old. The bolt action and trigger are both really nice and unexpectedly smooth. The chamber is in good shape, and while the barrel is dirty as fuck inside and out, it' seems to be in good condition otherwise. I'm paying the FFL an extra $50 bucks to give it a thorough cleaning and inspection inside and out, and I'd recommend this to anyone who plans to buy one of these rifles. He took the barrel bands off (the fact that they came off at all without destroying the wood is actually a really good sign - he owned an 1894 Brazilian Mauser where the wood was in worse shape and the rifle had been abused more, and ended up destroying the stock while taking it apart) and it going to put it in the deep cleaner for me. When I finally get it back and post pictures of it, it should look in pretty good shape. Again,if you know a good gunsmith, I'd recommend you do what I did and pay him a few bucks to make sure your rifle is good to go.

One caution is that if you got the surplus ammo that came with it, remember that it's DEFINITELY corrosive ammunition. Be sure to clean your rifle thoroughly after every time you put that stuff through it. Once you're done with it and switch to ammo manufactured more recently, you can probably get away with cleaning it less.

Anyhow, pictures to come once it's finally in my hands. So far so good, though.

Then detail clean and lube as you like.

Gunsmiths are like mechanics. I became a mechanic so I don't have to hope someone else gives a fuck about my trucks and motorcycles. By comparison firearms are very simple to work with.
>>
>>33074195
A stock sitting around in a hot, humid jungle for a hundred years tends to do some not-so-good things to the wood. Among other things, the wood had gotten so soft and squishy that it had fused to the bands, and there was no way to get them off without causing damage. Also, the screws were not the right type, and were put in wrong, which made it even harder to take it apart without damaging it. In short, it had been abused and was in shit shape when he got it, to the point where the stock was a loss no matter what.
>>
>>33073861
Everyday cleaning? I'll do that myself. A full cleaning and inspection on an 85-year-old rifle that probably hasn't been looked at since the 60s before I decide to ignite gunpowder in it a few inches from my face? I'll pay a gunsmith fifty bucks to do that.

To put a new stock on it. That's how a restoration works - you take trashed old parts off, fix them if you can, replace them if you can't, put it all back together, and end up with a gun that works and looks nice.
>>
>>33063666
I know that feel.

I spent $300 on my Hex 91/30 and $450 on my M48 when I bought them a couple years ago.

Don't regret it though. Both rifles are in damn good shape.
>>
>>33066681
I'd recommend an M39 over an M48 personally, but neither are bad rifles.

M48 bolts can be somewhat stiff and require a break-in period. This is due to a lot of them being put immediately into storage after they were made.
>>
>>33074430
neat
>>
>>33067432
I must've gotten lucky.

My Mosin 91/30 had a bit of a sticky bolt when I got it.

Disassembled the bolt and cleaned all the pieces with Ballistol. Runs like a dream now, and the bolt is even smoother than my M48 Mauser.

Don't care what anyone else says about Mosins, I love mine. A Mosin in great shape is a beautiful rifle, in my opinion.

There actually is; a carbine-length M93 made by FN for bicycle troops of the Belgian Garde Civique. It was chosen because the fully-internal magazine was more comfortable when slung on the cyclists' back. Confusingly, the Garde Civique designated this M93 carbine as "Modele 1889" like the actual Mauser Model 1889 carbines.

The Mk2 has a better trigger pull. They went from a trigger mounted on the trigger guard on the Mk1 and 1* to one mounted on the frame of the gun.

If you can find a Mk1/2 or 1/3 they started out life as a Mk1 or Mk1* (which were issued in ww2) and were updated to Mk2 standards later.

Here is my Mk1/2 I snagged for $400.
