You can't make this shit up:

Sherman M4A4 also known as Sherman V, made mostly for the horse-teeth people* had a power unit that was made out of 5 Chrysler A57 engines with combined power of 370/450 horsepower.

Technical & logistical retardation aside, my hat is off to those engineers who made it work.
Just fucking google that nigga:

*also known as the British

This baby also had 3 engines coupled together.

"so the Sentinel was powered by the combined output of three Cadillac 346 in3 (5.7 L) V8 petrol car engines installed in clover-leaf configuration (two engines side-by-side to the front and a single to the rear: all three feeding a common gearbox)"

That's some Mad Max shit right there
>>
Those were necessary because engines of the period were pathetically unreliable and low output by modern standards, even "good" ones from the US.

Bonus is a single engine failure could be bypassed. You could disable the ignition and remove the spark plugs to reduce load on the other powerplants, if you could reach the plugs with engine installed...

It seems pretty strange, but the British tested a number of M4A4 and M4A2 Shermans against Cromwell Is and IIIs and a small number of Centaurs. The only reported issue they had with the multibank engines was their higher fuel consumption. The diesels performed flawlessly, and the British concluded that the Sherman was far and away superior to anything they had produced thus far, especially in terms of gun performance and mechanical reliability.

Exercise Dracula, 1943, for anybody who wants to look into it. Nicholas Moran did a piece on it I believe.
>>
>>33058954
Supposedly this thing worked just fine, though the Ford GAA and GM 6046 were considered better. That was mainly because of their greater output and lower fuel consumption though.
>>
>>33058984
Well, that's wrong. The Ford GAA was an excellent engine. Overemgineered, and using technology that wouldn't become commonplace in commercial vehicles for almost 30 years after the war. Rated at 500 horsepower at 2800 rpm during the war, but Sherman crews swore it could do more, especially when they took the governor off. They were right too. Now it's rated for 525 at 2600 rpm, with good torque output as well.

The GAA was the best, but there were no bad engines put into the Sherman. Even the Wright Whirlwinds, which had their quirks but were fairly reliable and had good power to weight ratios.

Tell me more about this governor. I'm not calling you a liar, I just want to know more. It sounds like some (whatever the car equivalent of a fudd is) nonsense like removing "restrictor plates" or how removing catalytic converters magically gains you 50 horsepower

Military and industrial/commercial engines are often governed to not go over a set RPM. Either for the reliability of the engine or the wear and tear to the drivetrain (tracks, transmission, etc.)
>>
>>33065272
Why do you think we have germans for anon?
>>
>>33059042

It did, base issues were fuel distribution and the location of the distributors, but it was based on one of the most bulletproof inline sixes ever created.

As far as "best" M4 medium mill though, the GAA though takes the cake. Absurdly over-engineered and understressed.

was meant to be a competitor to the allison v12 in the p40. no buyers for our airplane engine? ok its a tank engine now.

???
Those are a real thing in racing.
>catalytic converters magically gains you 50 horsepower
This was once a real thing, but not for the last 25 years. Most people just do it because they are irresponsible poorfags.
>>
>>33065550

Right, on race cars, to keep the playing field more even. Not on stock vehicles. I've known a few retards that think for some reason manufacturers build engines that make a ton of power and then bolt on stuff that cuts their horsepower. Not just for emissions purposes, which did used to happen, but just because.

>>33065550
>Most people just do it because they are irresponsible poorfags.

Exactly

>>33065294
This is what I meant. RPM speed governor makes some sense. Just didn't know what the function or context of this "governor" was.

I've been a mechanic for 10 years, at my current dealership for 8 years, and I've heard some people spout some retarded shit. It's honestly put me off a lot from the whole car scene
