Which is better?
In a duel or on the battlefield? What time period?

Both.
First line with spear & shield, second line without shield but with longer pikes.
(and obviously plenty of the same behind to fill any gaps in the lines)

In a battlefield, 10-11th Century.

Spear and shield then. Shields are great for arrows, crossbow bolts, and melee weapons. If you were a 15th century man at arms with a lot of plate and mail armor, then you could just ditch the shield and use the spear with both hands.

You'd probably be using a pike or halberd though.

With a shield unless you have some sweet ass plate mail. Shields are handy in melee, but also offer the best protection against missiles as they can save your ass even if the missile partially penetrates.

I'm going to say with shield because I have trust issues but >>33046847 is objectively correct.

Spears?
You've never seen a Britney Spears poster at Walmart and got an erection at age 13, before Internet porn.
