They didn't even have centerfire rifle ammo to buy. Just 30 year old guns for rent and bricks of .22lr for $70 for sale. They had a huge backstop for the 50-300 yard rifle range and an even bigger one for handguns. I live in glorious Pennsylvania and I have never payed to go shooting, never had to deal with a 'range officer' or any bullshit rules.

In PA there are public and FREE outdoor ranges for anybody to use that are maintained by the state. Closest one to me is like 30 minutes. It's literally just a field with a berm and concrete benches and tables with target holders at 25, 50, 75 and 100 yards. You can basically do whatever you want as long as you are safe. If there are other people there when you go you just say hi and then make sure you all make eye contact and say "Hey all clear!" before you walk down to set up or check out your target.

I love the PA public range system. I live in NY so I drive just an hour or so into Pike County. 100 yard rifle range and two 25 yard pistol ranges.
Pay $30 for a license that's good all year as long as the range is open that day. Place is usually covered in brass and shell but I always clean mine up.

I was visiting a gun store and looked over at another customer pointing gun my way. I keep moving so I'm not directly in front of muzzle. Employee says something about, "let me do something to someone happy" while taking the gun back. He holds it up telling me it is clear. That pissed me off a little. If one of the customers at my store was making someone uncomfortable I would tell them to stop sweeping/pointing, not make light of basic gun safety.

Also, I think some people don't consider sweeping people a violation of basic gun safety. When I've asked people that kept sweeping me or someone else to keep the gun pointed in a safe direction they would say something to the extent of, "oh, I wouldn't point a gun at anyone." I had one guy get pissed off and be a complete jerk about it.

New to the area, so my search for a shooting range started here, I only live 3 blocks away. The facilities are excellent. The place is very well manicured and kept immaculate to say the least. However, that's about all I like about the place. I encountered 5 different range officers on 5 separate occasions. The first BIG con is the 2 seconds between shots ! Yep, no defensive handgun practice, no full autos, and absolutely no fun at all. I am 29 years old and I can only describe this place as an old mans shooting range. But I could have lived with all that, until my 5th and final trip when a range officer told me they didn't allow open carry for anyone. Noticing 3 men all wearing leg rigs, to my right. I asked why they were allowed to wear there guns openly ? He replied that law enforcement were afforded an exception ! Turns out they were BOND RECOVERY AGENTS ! Last time I checked, thats not law enforcement, thats bounty hunting.

I concur with the "Old Mans Shooting range". This was the first range I have been to in Washington State. I arrived in the morning, wasn't too busy. The facilities seemed nice. I approached the Range Office with my sunglasses on. When they opened the door I lifted my sunglasses out of habit because it is more respectful to look someone in the eye when you speak to them. My back was turned towards some old timers that were plinking with .22 shorts. I kindly asked the two older gentlemen in the office where I needed to sign in and pay because it was my first time there. The first time I went to the range this dude walked in carrying his AR like a cave man with a club. He was holding it by the barrel and almost dragging the buttstock on the floor. He walked up to counter to check in, and the dude at the counter asked to see his rifle (to check if it was loaded). Caveman hefted the rifle and pointed the muzzle straight into the dude's face. Range guy jerked backwards and smacked the rifle to the side. Caveman looked very offended and said (sounding very indignant) "WHUT? It ain't loaded!"
I 360'd and skedaddled before someone could get shot.
That's my only story. Pretty lame I guess.

DFW seriously sucks for ranges. Now I'm in Houston which is slightly better, but still has a lot of the shit rules. If you want to shoot outdoors, it's ASC or Hot Wells, both of which are pretty fuddy. Planning on joining a private club soon. Fees are pretty decent and has some pretty good rules from what I've heard.

Both Houston and Austin are better, which is odd considering Austin is about as liberal as it gets. Meh, maybe the hippies drive out the fudds or something. There's definitely quite a bit of fudd in Houston, but there is a really large shooting culture here. It's probably the densest concentration of fun stores in the state, and some of them are really good. There are still some stupid rules at the two big outdoor ranges, but some of the indoor ones are actually pretty nice.
