just found this knife cleaning my grandpa (RIP) house
can you tell me something? is any good?
Looks like a kris. Don't try to clean it with any abrasives or chemicals until you know what it is

Looks like a sacrificial dagger of some sort. Sorry Anon, your grandfather may have been a cultist.
>>33034877
This. It's a keris or kris.
Did you grandfather ever go to indonesia or malaysia? They are very important historically in those cultures. It might be an important family heirloom.
Google keris or kris knife indonesia for info.

It's probably a cheap tourist trinket, but it could be something cool. generwlly far eastern blades aren't worth much even if authentic, unless they're in great condition or have historic providence
>>33034859
GOD DAMN! That's a rare one! The handle probably made from ivory. Based form the handle and the lok (wavy blade) style. I say this is a peninsula- Malay style keris.
>>33034859
Sorry about your granddad anon
>>33034859
It's a keris. Prolly from eastern indonesia or southern Malaysia (filipino keris is longer and used more as a slashing weapon), mainly used to stab people.
There's a specific way to hold a keris. You don't clasp it like a knife. Instead, you hold it somewhat like a snubnosed revolver with yo thumb placed at the ricasso

forgot pic

Check if the horse's head is ivory. If it's real ivory then it's not some tourist's trinket.

Is an old probably Indonesian kris, with 100% real ivory handle, the aboriginals that made it either put some dark or white "supernatural powers" into it by carefully choosing a mix of materials to give it a very specific pattern called pamor
It was used mostly for special rites and ceremonies it dates back to the 17th/18th century
Is cataloged as "heritage of humanity" by UNESCO
It could worth from a couple of hundreds to several thousands

is not a horse I believe is an owl
and yes is ivory
Is there a way to tell the origin of a kris?
>>33035199
The handle style and the blade (wavy, straight). Nothing much from the sheath.
>>33035182
Owl? I'm gonna go with an orangutan
>>33035199
There's plenty of regional styles and whatnot (the fittings for mine for example point to Surakarta and thereabout), so someone who knows his stuff may have a good chance of identifying where something comes form with a better accuracy than just the country.
Such people can be found over at http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=11
If you're lucky they'll be in a helpful mood. Just don't ask about price, they've had a few antique dealers too many come by and try having them as free expert assistance.

Short Keris is prevalent in Malaysia and Sumatra (indonesia) while longer kris is popular in java or the philippines
Also, the motif of handle/hilt (or horse's head) could tell the origin. Indonesian keris would use animal motif while Malaysian keris would prefer plant motifs
Oh, and I think OP's is a bugis style keris, which Wiki tells me would mean southern Sulawesi.
>>33035226
Don't forget Kelantan style Keris Pekaka which is mostly using bird as a motif. Probably due to South Thai influence.

Philippines too
>>33037753
OP's keris isn't a Filipino (Moro) one, those are quite distinct critters.
>>33035182
sheeeeeet thats a sloth
Keris can give you bad juju if you believe in that sort of thing. Be careful, and F for your grandpa
>>33034859
It's a kris. Probably got it as a gift during his travels. It's almost entirely ceremonial so please take care of it.
>>33034859
that there is an old fashioned skinwalker hunting blade
>>33035283
"PROVENANCE" YOU FUCKING CHIMP
>>33039310
Yep. You gonna take care of her carefully. I inherited couple of them and there's a way to wash them.
>>33035182
This is beautiful OP. Please do not sell this or get rid of it. Congrats on such a nice keris.
