After 12 years of conflict in Iraq and an even more savage conflict in Syria, Iran is now closer than ever to securing a land corridor that will anchor it in the region – and potentially transform the Islamic Republic’s presence on Arab lands. “They have been working extremely hard on this,” said a European official who has monitored Iran’s role in both wars for the past five years. “This is a matter of pride for them on one hand and pragmatism on the other. They will be able to move people and supplies between the Mediterranean and Tehran whenever they want, and they will do so along safe routes that are secured by their people, or their proxies.”
Ali Khedery, who advised all US ambassadors to Iraq and four commanders of Centcom in 2003-11 said securing a Mediterranean link would be seen as a strategic triumph in Iran. “It signifies the consolidation of Iran’s control over Iraq and the Levant, which in turn confirms their hegemonic regional ambitions,” he said. “That should trouble every western leader and our regional allies because this will further embolden Iran to continue expanding, likely into the Gulf countries next, a goal they have explicitly and repeatedly articulated. Why should we expect them to stop if they’ve been at the casino, doubling their money over and over again, for a decade?”

Looks like he's just duct taped it to the carry handle too.

Anyway, seems like this Mosul offensive will be the last big push that leads to the retaking of the city.
>>
I got some bad news.

I won't be attending Idex this year, I looked at the flights (I fly standby because my father is a pilot ect...) and due to the time I have to travel, I won't be able to make it there during the conference.

However, I do realize this comment is off topic, but I changed the trip so i'll be going to Seoul and the DMZ. Any of you guys would be interested if I post? Of course i'll do it on a separate thread

To keep my post on topic, ISF has officially launched its Mosul offensive to recapture the western half of the city after taking a break upon reaching the banks of the Tigris. This news is just a few hours old so my guess is that they launched the assault prior to officially notifying ISIL.

What will be interesting is the context of the river. Assaulting entrenched positions is hard, but to top it off with having to deal with a river must be difficult. I'd love to get my hands on some of the cross-river assault footage.

In Palmyra, SAA have reached the 10km mark from the Palmyra triangle, marking the closest point they've reached since they were pushed out of the town.

Lastly, SAA plans to cut off TFSA to the south of Al Bab as they set their sights on Al-Khafsa. Erdogan will most likely target Kurds in Manbij, something that the Kurds are preparing for as one of their spokesmen stated that they will fight to retain the city.

>>
>>33045514
>I'd love to get my hands on some of the cross-river assault footage.
Whats to say there will be any? The initial assault seems to have been on a few villages to the south nearish the airport, is there any reason the Iraqis can't just work their way along the western side of the river from the south? Sure it might take a bit longer than some glorious simultaneous assault across the whole city, but it seems a lot less likely to end up in a logjam of dead Iraqis floating downstream.
>>
>>33045514

I'd definitely be interested in Seoul stuff.

>>
>>33045551
It's a tank with an armored conning tower. Nothing less than a missile or an airstrike is going to take it out, so it'll be effective regardless
>>
>>33045625
I agree with you, but towards the end of the offensive it would make sense to also advance across the river in order to maximize the surface area that ISIL has to defend. I'm thinking more along the lines of more elite units conducting night time incursions and in the morning ISIL has to deal with Iraqis in front of them and behind their positions.

But that's just my two cents on the situation.

This is the latest Step map on Palmyra, exactly where I thought the SAA was, in the center of the orchards. Other than that not much else other than the SDF in a new push more toward Deir Ezzor , some minor clashes.

Mosul is taking the spotlight again. I think the objective is the airport for now.

>>33048775
I suspect a IS counter attack as well but I also see this as turning into a new major offensive by the SAA and friends.

Losing Palmyra was highly embarrassing to their Russian backers. They'll throw a bunch of cannon bait in this for even minor progress. This battle is definitely heating up as they broke out from T4.
>>
>>33048864
Speaking of t4, how did the SAA managed to counter attack? Was there an important battle? I remember back when ISIS was on the verge of winning. They were really close to t4 and even the road to Homs.
And then the situtation looked stabilized for weeks.
>>
>>33049163
ISIS spent its forces against the airbase, while the syrians and russians managed to reifnorce the place.
When the SAA and ruskies felt comfortable enough to leave the airbase, they just started advancing towards Palmyra.

The ISIS forces were limited and were already winded from having to take Palmyra. ISIS manpower is seriously shitty now. They only manage to make any kind of advance relying on surprise and great organization.
>>
>>33049163
They shipped in a ton of reinforcements. A lot called 5th corp. Thanks to Aleppo being over they can afford it. I never thought IS would take T4 even as they hit it hard. In fact IS was getting ready to retreat days before they lost Hayyan. I did think they would try and go for another part of eastern Homs at the time.
>>33049342
>They only manage to make any kind of advance relying on surprise and great organization.
Agree however they "managed" to take all those oil fields there because they have been untouched in rural eastern Homs for so long they build up a stronghold there and this stronghold remains untouched. If the SAA wanted to fuck them over they should head straight for the fields. This would bleed IS out before headed for Palmyra. If they head for Palmyra IS will still be sitting out there..plotting.
>>
>>33049342
>>33049572
Thanks.

>>
>>33050262
The town itself nothing much, although any place of note in the midst of desert has ome relevance, it's more about the T4 airbase being both pretty large and the easternmost point the SAA has to use as a staging point against IS.

propaganda, nothing else.
the town isn't really nessesary to have, when wanting to capture the oil/gas fields.
The town doesn't really help in liberating "muh DEZ".
Its just propaganda and an acient city - that used to be in a more or less good condition...it used to be.

i dont give a shit about tadmor/palmyra. sure the offensive was entertaining back then, just like the way isis recaptured it, but it doesnt have any value.
>>
>>33050262
The town is irrelevant, it's only a stopping place in the road towards Deir-ez-Zor.
It has propaganda and historical value however.
>>
>>33050435
>>33050517
Oh so their priority is Dez?
They don't wanna secure their Oil fields first?
>>
>>33050595
What I tried to say is that the city is not important. It's just in the way of everything else, like Deir-ez-Zor, or oil fields.

Best they can realistically hope for is some degree of autonomy in their regions within Syria.
Turkey will do anything to stop a fully fledged Kurdistan appearing on their border and for all the lolroach meming the Kurds do not have the capability to take the fight and force the matter. Right now they're getting a buttload of help in both training, weapons and CAS from the US, all of which will disappear shortly after the Kurds cease being a useful proxy on the ground against IS and immediately if they try taking a straight up fight against Turkey.
If they can play their cards right and avoid any more shitstorms flaring up against the SAA they can be in a good position to make a deal with Assad in a post-IS scenario: They get some degree of autonomy in their traditional regions, Assad gets back the bits of country occupied by them outside 'their' territories (ie all the areas taken around Raqqa in the past couple of months), assurances that the Kurds will deal with any IS elements trying to hang out in their territory (common enemy anyway so it's a no-brainer), and he doesn't have to potentially roll from fighting 2 draining wars against IS and the various rebels directly into yet another against the Kurds.

Recap of day

1. Continued SAA progress towards Palmyra.
2. ISIS affiliate taking 3-5 towns in Golan Heights/Daraa from FSA.
3. Minor progress for TFSA in Bab. I want to say ISIS has a month or so left there, but then again they've lasted 4-5 months already.
4. SDF/Kurds making significant progress North of Raqqa. Their western offensive peetered out a month ago, but now a north Raqqa offensive is 10km from the city suburbs, and a northeast offensive is beginning.
5. SAA absolutely plastering rebels in Ghouta. The last of the three pockets remaining near Damascus is being bombed to bits.
6. Some rebels near Lebanon border agreed to withdraw to Idlib.
7. Continued fighting between Jihadi 1 and Jihadi 2 in Idlib mini-civil war.
8. Iraqi forces making progress on West Mosul outskirts.

Predictions
1. SAA will retake Palmyra within the month. ISIS forces there are weakened.
2. Al-Bab ISIS have a month left.
3. 3rd pocket near Damascus will fall within the month.
4. Continued infighting in Idlib.
5. More SDF progress isolating Raqqa.

Just another day in the Syria
>>

That was never the case. SAA has retreated into the base and used its (apparently impressive) defenses to wait out the IS attack. IS lost a ton of men while SAA brought more and more men and tanks and now the counter attack is happening.

Map of Al Bab as TFSA moved back into some parts of the city. The SAA seems to be sitting back, eating popcorn and watching the show as Tiger forces recent advances toward Deir Hafer and south Al Bab have halted.

-IS Yarmouk brigade made large advances on FSA in southern Syria although they seem to be retreating now

Pro rebel sources claim Jund al-Aqsa has agreed to leave northern Hama and go to IS territory in Hama. Two things , how do they plan on moving though SAA territory(they can just do that?) and you bet IS Hama/Homs will throw them into the Palmyra fighting if they make it.

>The sdf can isolate/close with Raqqa all they want I still don't understand how or why they would even want to take it.
>how
They wont, quite simply, and likely wont even try because
>why
They're only down there at all because the US is pushing hard for them to go keep IS under pressure and tie up men and equipment in the area, they have no desire to actually take the city which explains why they're pushing all around the outskirts without trying to fight their way into any notably built up areas. Expect them to keep doing the same for the foreseeable future, they know IS can fight far more effectively in urban areas where the USAF support isn't nearly as useful and they have nowhere near enough loyalty to the US's desires to expend large amounts of blood for them somewhere that holds no natural attraction.

First things first.
ISIS has reportedly moved its operational HQ from Raqqa to Al-Qaim, in Iraq, near the border with Syria, on the Euphrates.

YPG is happily conquering more desert east of Raqqa, between the city and Madaan.

SAA started advancing east of Aleppo again. They're now directly north of Deir-Hafer, some 6km far from the city.

Turks evacuated from Al-Bab's Zamzan districts after heavy (for this war) casualities.
ISIS is also widening the opening between turk fronts in Bzaah.

Rebels backed by the kurds are intensifying operations near Azaz, taking checkpoints aroun the city. The kurds should advance on that front once Al-Bab is done (in 2043). It should be interesting to see if the SAA will step in there when the time comes.

Speaking of SAA, they've regained almost every inch of the territory lost to the rebels in Daraa in the recent offensive against the government there.
>>
>>33072557
Regarding Iraq, the government has restarted the offensive against ISIS in Mosul, advancing from the right side of the river (west) in the south towards the city.

Allies have also started operations near Tal Afar.
>>
Meanwhile in Afghanistan
>Afghan soldiers and policemen on Tuesday surrounded the house of Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum in an apparent effort to arrest nine of his aides accused of kidnapping and raping a political opponent on his orders.

>The attempt to bring about the arrests came after the attorney general complained to police authorities that they had ignored previous orders to carry out the arrests. The police had said they feared an armed confrontation and would have to evacuate the residential neighborhood “to avoid civilian casualties,” according to copies of official documents obtained by The New York Times.

>Stung by the attorney general’s criticism, police officials promised on Monday to take action. On Tuesday, more than 100 police and soldiers surrounded the downtown Kabul compound of Mr. Dostum, an ethnic Uzbek who is the more senior of the country’s two vice presidents. Observers said it appeared to be a siege, although there was no gunfire and the mood was calm.
Dostum was a warlord who is known for making thinly veiled attempts to murder his political opponents

Not much to add. I noticed the SAA also made further advances toward Palmyra by opening a new front to the south plus taking most if not all of the orchards. I think this is the exact path they took the last time they took Palmyra.

SOHR story on SDF/YPG advancement in northern Raqqa.

There has been a IS counter attack again in "little Sweden" near Tabqa dam but after everything else IS starting to go into panic mode around Raqqa. They definitely feel threatened, even if the city isn't falling anytime soon.

TFSA still barely making any progress in Al Bab while minor clashes go on with Afrin YPG.

If ISIS is true to form, they'll try something unorthodox on their opponents. That seems to be their pattern. It'll most likely be an unexpected attack somewhere else.

ISIS lite in the basin expanded a bit, contracted, then expanded out for like 50% of the previous gains.

Sometimes ISIS attacks al-nursra and levels a few buildings with VBIED.

Low media attention for a couple of reasons.
Firstly there's no attractive 'EVIL ASSADPUTIN BOMBS LAST HOSPITAL/BAKERY/ORPHANAGE' story to push right now, and second the focus is wholly on Iraq for the start of the West Mosul operation, which will get attention for maybe another week before the media shuts up about the whole thing for the next few months to avoid posting negative "fighting continues for the same city blocks as the last 3 weeks" type stories over and over.

It's fucking lit. Surprisingly good game for it's price.

Also puts a lot of things into context that you didn't understand before, though.
It can be pretty hard preserving your forces at times. There's never a solid frontline and your forces are limited to a handful of squads and your vehicles are rusty slavshit that dies to one RPG (And they're around every corner) instead of undedable Abrams, you begin to sympathize a bit with arab commanders and soldiers who are otherwise mocked here in the west for poor performance and high casualties.
Still, nothing beats a tank crew under heavy fire tossing smoke grenades 50 meters ahead so they can steal a disabled tank from the enemy.

That or I'm just really shit at this game.
>>
>>33087603
>On the other side, the Daesh forces are composed of all kinds of troops, elite mercenaries, both Islamic veterans of earlier wars and operators from the notorious private armies of corporations like DynCorp and Blackwater, the commanders are experts from Israel, the Gulf States and other nations outside the region, even Britons and Americans may be serving there, as they have elsewhere under the banner of IS.

am not him - saying they arent huge isn't fair...yes, they are short in manpower compared to ahrar al sham or JFS aka HTS, but their fighting skill and (way more important) morale is high, so its a huge blow for the rebels, to let them go to ISIS

they already gone full ISIS mode and will leave northern hama, to sneak through SAA lines and join ISIS from what i've read.
I have no clue where they will be send to and how much it will affect this frontline, maybe in al-Bab (DO IT 4 THE KEKS) or way worse DEZ this could be a really bad case (SAA point of view)

Fighting in the middle east never ceases to suprise me. Looking at the bodies most if not all of them died at the bottom of the trench where I'd expect them to be at the top end, since you'd want to be shooting at an advancing enemy before your trench is overrun.

Did Hezbollah just sneak up on them? Was the supressing fire that effective? Or is this just a case of lack of discipline?

Plays kinda similar to Men of War (without the direct control ability, which i never liked desu) which is a good thing indeed.

Pretty good game and i had no technical difficulties at all, which surprises me since it comes from a pretty small studio.

Now they only need to add a skirmish mode.

Its been quite a while since i played a real time tactics game but i think its kinda hard too. (not that this is a bad thing ofc.. it would kinda suck to steamroll everything in a game featuring the SAA. Loosing troops and tanks left and right only adds to the setting).

at first they send the floating bridges to northern mosul and made it look like they will attack there and now they already have steamrolled the airport, the huge armybase and (even more important) the mountain chain, overlooking mosul, in the south/south-west of the city.

>>
>>33103345
We can be happy that very few people that want to cause as much harm and destruction as possible have had access to a proper education. Drones don't change the playing field by much, people always found ways.

Loading a truck with ANFO is easy, if you're more sophisticated you can cook up other explosives and kill VIPs with EFPs or flood a subway with sarin. The remote controlled hang glider loaded with explosives ramming itself in a government building IAI harop style isn't that much more dangerous than stuff that's been available for decades.
>>
>>33103400
in most western countries you can go out and buy two tons of ammonium nitrate fertilizer without questions asked. It's probably even more relaxed in other countries.

Take a guess. The confinement of modern powerplants can take direct hits of passenger planes. No, you won't be able to damage it. It'd probably be a lot easier to fuck up a reprocessing facility, but still not achievable by a small group of people. These things are well guarded.
