I personally love the balaclava. I have huge problems with escaping heat from my neck and also when it gets cold enough for my ears.

Ive been thinking about getting something to replace the balaclava but it gets the job done with good measure, so I dont see the point

Great for when you don't have or want a hood. Hoods often don't turn with your head - if you need to see around you then hats and balaclavas are the way to go.

But not great when you have glasses or long hair. Glasses fog up and untied long hair gets mussed up and in the eyes. The alternative for that is separate items - neck warmer or scarf, face mask with ventilation for glasses, and larger/looser hat for long hair.
