Post em, compliment em, discuss em

My 54 Tula, got it for $460.
>>
Sorry, no picture yet.

I bought a yugo a few weeks ago for 400+ processing fee at an LGS right before moving out of GA to CO, still haven't had the opportunity to take it to the range yet.

All matching numbers and very clean, prestine condition. It's an eye candy. Wife loves the looks of it too. VERY excited to fire off some rounds hopefully soon.

What should I expect?
>>
Does someone know if the SKS is restricted or unrestricted in Canada
>>
Here are my three. I've considered selling the Chinese one with the security forces markings. I still want a Russian.
>>
>>33026707
have fun, just remember to clean it thoroughly afterwards, it doesn't have chrome lining. Overall, a very hardy rifle.
>>33026822
unrestricted, you get them for super cheap up there. But you have to deal with the cucked 5 round mag limit.
>>33026850
nice, if you want a Russian though, you better hurry because the prices are only going to rise, and don't depend on le import bans lifted meme, odds are not much will happen.

Here's mine, a 54' Tula. Her stock is a bit banged up and the surplus ammo doesn't treat her too well but she runs and looks fine. Pretty good for $290 syrup bucks.

Is this a good deal? I am in AZ (1.5hrs away from these guys) and I called 46 gun stores today across AZ asking for SKSs. No one else has reasonable non-chink SKSs. This guy said he had hundreds right next to him. I'm assuming if I go down there I can pick the prettiest one.

>Can I, or a gunsmith, take off the flash hider easily? Is this aftermarket or did Yugo actually have them?
>Assuming he only has SKSs with the faggot pad on the butt, how easily can I get a steel one? Is the rubber pad aftermarket? Were these even made with steel butts?
>>
I do feel a bit bad for you US guys when it comes to Soviet milsurps. We get $350 SVT-40s and $200 SKS up here. I'm always taken back when I hear the outrageous prices you guys have to pay for them.

I think the world would be a better place if everyone had cheap ruskie SKS's

But I can buy 3 for the same price. 5 rounds in 3 rifles = 15 rounds

I was being genuinely sincere before. But now I think I'm going to go buy another one tomorrow and bubba it out. My local place has a 49 for $239, I think a tapco stock would make it way better
>>
>>33030013
I like beretta generals. Full of class.
>>
>>33030030
Thanks. I'm on the fence if this AZ will be worth the slightly higher price. I can:
>Drive 1.5hrs and choose best wood grain myself
>Flash my CCW and skip background check, take home immediately
>Slightly lower sales tax
>Don't have to pay FFL transfer fee
>Don't have to pay gunsmith to remove grenade launcher for when I move back to CA in a couple months

I've been waiting for an SKS forever so I think I might just pay the higher price for instant gratification
>>
>>33030030
Be careful with these guys. They won't tell you how much it costs to ship and according to yelp reviews, they charge $50+ for rifles.
>>
>>33029814
Good and perfect aren't the same thing. It's a dated rifle that is surpassed at LITERALLY EVERYTHING by other guns.
>>
>>33030218
He implied it was perfect for a specific purpose. As a beater Red Dawn, grab-and-go semi auto. It fits its role very nicely and that's why it's so popular. It's versatile and hard to ban. Deer, car doors, Russian paratroopers; the sks can and reliably will handle it. It's accessible and fun as shit but yeah, it's definitely not a SCAR or whatever.
>>
>>33030316
I said "literally everything" for a reason.
At that price range, there's absolutely no reason not to buy an AK instead. None. It'll do all of the same things better and more efficiently.

If you're dirt poor and CAN'T save the extra ~300 for a high quality AK, you can get a fucking hipoint for less money and actually afford ammo... and it's magazine fed and an excellent beater gun using more common ammunition.

If you can afford multiple longarms, there is, yet again, no reason to bother with the SKS. Put an AK in its place, or even a fucking keltech if you're space limited, and stash better guns at your destination.

The SKS is fun. It's a good, low maintenance range toy anf cukign around gun. It's not a bad starter gun. And if you're in the US, paying US prices for it, that's all it is.
>>
>>33027834
>this is an actual family photo

>>33030481
SKS is also great if you already have something else shooting the same ammo type and want something that looks "less scary" when hiking/backpacking/etc.

i dont know yet, im out of state and i had my buddy act as a agent for me. He had to go by my house and pick up the gun and do the deal because someone answered my ad for my universal m1 carbine.

I know an old gunsmith with 3 of them. Ill let you know later on tonight. My buddy did the deal and went to his girls house so im not going to bother him. Ill let you know when i find out though.

>>
>>33031419
because they got a good fucking deal, whats not to be proud of. im not a jew but boy do i dig getting a deal.
>>
>>33031419

You can still score good deals on them from time to time, even as an American. I recently grabbed a Chinese SKS in unissued condition (not even a single dent on the wood either) for $280 at a gunshow just last month.

>>33031449

The problem is that 99% of the people bitching about gun prices are old fucks who yap about stories like "BACK IN MY DAY I COULD BUY A MOSIN FOR $20". Unfortunately this amazing thing known as inflation exists, which is also why gas is no longer 95 cents for a gallon either.

Also, on top of it all, shit like an SKS is STILL a good deal for $300. You can't go wrong with a nice SKS, and it'll suit all your general needs. Obviously some $2,000 rifle will outperform it. You could always save up ~$700 and buy a nice AR-15 or AK, but some people like to stick to a decent budget rifle, and I can assure you an SKS will be a shitty Hi Point any day of the week.
>>
>>33031660
On that note, my local milsurp store has an SKS for 499. I really want to grab it with my return but I'm on the fence because of the price. I'd like to hold out on a stroke of luck decent deal, but at the same time I really want an SKS for the sake of it.
>>
>>33031730

$500 is probably a bad deal for an SKS, unless it's some 100% flawless unissued Russian SKS. I'd recommend browsing Gunbroker and looking at local gunshows.
>>
>>33031730
don't do it my local shop has a rack full for around 400
>>
>>33031861
>>33031766

Yeah, it's a chink SKS not a Russian. It's a nice-looking chink, mind you, but still not a Ruskie. That's my thought as well.

This place has a pretty high markup on shit, so I use it as a place to fingerfuck a gun then go online/other stores to buy.
>>
>>33031041
>Also who is the manufacturer that made your pre converted SKS?

Norinco.
>>
I thought Chinese was still considered better than Russian for SKSs? Did the Russkies even chrome their barrels?
>>
>>33031955

Russians and Chinese used chrome in their barrels. Chinese proper give the Russians a run for their money (AKA Chinese SKS's with /###\ and Chinese writing on the receiver). The Chinese made for imports (they say "Made in China" in English) are of questionable quality.

Not my words or opinion, but there is a LOT of shitflinging that has gone on for years about that subject. I've seen people swear by how a Chinese military SKS (factory triangle and Chinese letters) is mechanically superior to the made for export version. I've also seen claims that the bluing is far worse on the export models.

I personally own a factory 906 military SKS, and it performs great.

How can you tell the difference between Chinese and Russian models.
>>
>>33032145

Chinese:

>pokey spike bayonet most of the time
>obvious chink writing on the receiver or "Made in China" if it's an export model

Russian:

>ANUUU writing
>Russian factory marrks
>>
>>33032171
I think I've seen more Chinese with blade-type than spike-type, honestly.
>>
tfw you bid too much for an SKS on gunbroker because you miss your old one
>>
>>33032203
early sino-soviets had blades.

easiest way to tell if it has the factory stock.
russians have laminate wood like in OPs pic
Chinese export models usually have light "chu" wood stocks
Chinese military ones that aren't refinished have a dark hardwood stock.

otherwise, just look for the factory marks.
Chinese ones usually have triangles with shapes and a number in them
Russians have either a triangle with an arrow in it or a star with an arrow in it.
>>
>>33032100
a lot of the early export ones were refurbished type 56Cs.

the later new export ones lack barrel shanks or have a pin rather than screw for the bayonet. so yes, corners were cut on those.

my SKS was refurbished and has a light chu wood stock, but has all matching military factory markings

>>
>>33034126

Gunbroker. Be warned that if you need something like a Russian/Yugo blade bayonet, you're going to be assfucked by the prices (easily $80+, if not more). Chinese spike bayonets can be bought for as little as $10.

Regular run of the mill:

Uncommon:

>Albanian
>Romanian

Prepare you pay out the ass:

>East German

The Russians "gave" the SKS to any country who adopted communism; forcibly or otherwise.

Here in Canada, we have pristine Tula arsenal Russians all day long ranging from 1949-1956 in both hardwood and laminate. We do get Izhevsk arsenal ones but they're more rare because they only made them for a few years.

Marstar had tons of new/unissued Chinese military SKS's a few years ago but those are long gone. A few places are stocking Chinese military models but they're $250 for a beat up POS. Why pay that when you can get a much better condition Russian for $230 or less? I'm sure we have the Norinco "civilian market" SKS's floating around but nobody still sells or imports them.

Pic related is my two 1953 Tula's with nothing but factory acceptance marks bought for $200 Maplebucks each.
>>
>>33034019
everyone say something different... why is there no consensus?

i have heard 50-53 Izhevsk is the best

others say that 54-56 Tula is the best

how am i supposed to know whats the best quality?

what does one inspect for?

what does barrel wear look like on the sks?

i know we are literally arguing over pennies here but i want an accurate 7.62x39 and if i dont find enough info about the sks before buying one, then i might as well just save up some more and a zastava m85 instead. its only a couple hundred more than an sks

If you want a truly accurate rifle in 7.62x39, then a 60 year old surplus rifle probably isn't your best bet, frankly.

My Romanian is mighty accurate inside 200 yards, but it's still an SKS. It's no MOA rifle, but it's pretty easy to find one that shoots well enough. Any Russian, Chink, Yugo, Rommy, or whatever that isn't a turd should be just fine.

Westrifle ( http://westrifle.com/wrstore/ ) - used to be the best but now they're getting Jewish with their prices. The advantage with them is that they post pics of the exact rifle you're buying and the shipping is included with their price.

After that, the guys over at SFRC and Wolverine Supplies are excellent to deal with. If you're thinking about an aftermarket stock, Wolverine sells SKS's with a Tapco Timbersmith already installed and it's cheaper than buying separately.

Tips for the rifle itself:

Don't bother with recoil buffers. They can actually cause slam fires and feeding issues. Muzzle brakes are optional. I have one of these http://hical.ca/sks-short-muzzle-brake-pin-on/ on one of my rifles. I can't tell if it actually does anything.

Worthwhile upgrades are a set of Wolff springs and Murray's sear kit. If you want to add a scope, http://magwedge.com/products/rifle-accessories/magwedge-sks-full-length-kwik-rail/ are a high quality way to do it. They also act as a shell deflector at the expense of no longer being able to use stripper clips. Then again, just turn the rifle over, pop the magazine well and dump in five.

Hey, anon here, the one that posted the SKS stock a long ass time ago with the really shitty camera, anyone have any ideas on where I could find parts cheap? I'll take anything, Romanian, Russian, Yugo, Chinese, GDR or otherwise.

>If you want a truly accurate rifle in 7.62x39, then a 60 year old surplus rifle probably isn't your best bet, frankly.
i dont actually believe such a thing exists, i just want as accurate as possible 7.62x39

theres a M85 and a CZ 527 which is also cool but expensive AF
>>
why THE FUCK should i spend $250 on an SKS when I could spend $600 on a M85?

plz /k/ convince me to buy shitty commie bangstick instead, you will save me $350

sportsmansguide has them for $500. do it.
also, where you getting an sks for $250?
>>
>>33036946
canada so im im speaking canuck cuckbux here:

$600/1.3 = $461 freedom dollars for M85
$251/1.3 = $192 trump bucks for SKS

id be willing to spend $300 on """"supergrade"""" sks but again why the fuck am i bothering if the gun shoots so shit? i watched accurizing videos on sks and bedding hte stock will make it "more" accurate but again if its garbage to begin with then thats not saying anything.

I dont know what gun to buy
>>

They don't even attach the barrels to the receivers the same way, it's clear as day they cheaped out on those export versions. They even dabbled in making them stamped for further cost-cutting, but it was discovered this went too far into "cheap dogshit" territory. There's a reason these cheaper export SKSs are by far and away the most produced SKS out there.
>>
>>33038105
that shoots 4moa if you're lucky

>>33038158

How do you tell if an SKS was made for export vs military? The triangle and Chinese characters means military, right?

I think a lot of the earlier export ones were just rebranded military rifles without an arsenal stamp, the longer production went the more and more corners they cut. They even started making the trigger guard housing stamped.
>>
>>33038289

So the arsenal stamp (The /###\ mark) is a sure sign it's military?
>>
>>33038311
That's what I've read, but I'd do some more research if you want a definitive answer. There's a shitload of exceptions and grey areas with Chinese SKSs in my studies so far
>>
>>33038322

The problem is I can't seem to find a definitive answer. Heck, I've seen people say that the export models are the same as the military models too. Most people, at least from what I can find, say that the triangle and Chinese marks means it's a military, while having "Made in China" in English means it's an export model.
>>
>>33038311
No.
Not all commercials were purpose built for export.
Many were simply parts bin rifles hastily assembled and sold.
>>
>>33038378
I can tell you now there are a shitload of clearly meant-for-export Chinese rifles, and it shows. Stamped components that literally every other version of the rifle has milled, lack of milling, inferior finish, shittier stocks, you name it. I don't think the Made in China thing means anything because that could have easily been an importer just stenciling it in to meet regs, no matter who the rifle was originally meant for.

What stock is that? How much did it cost? How does it compare to the original stock? And does it require any permanent modifications?

One of the things i dislike about the original stock is how damn short and stubby it is, and the grip angle. Which this stock seems to remedy.

>tfw bought an SKS in unissued condition for $300 at a LGS a few weeks ago

Granted, it's one of the newer models with a spike bayonet, but it doesn't have a single dent or scratch in the wood, and all the bluing is a deep color without any sign of wear.

I'm still not sure if it's a military or commercial model though:

>receiver has triangle arsenal and Chinese letters on it
>wood is dark instead of the lighter color commercial models usually have
>sling swivel is on the side of the stock, not bottom
>all parts match with proper # stamping (no electropen or scratched out numbers)

Regardless, it shoots perfectly fine.
>>
>>33039853
I like blade-type bayonets and I was actually looking for one that was already a bit beat up since it's going to be my camp rifle. I'd feel bad beating up a rifle in good condition.

if you wanted to you could ignore the bottom chevrons and only use the top one. adjust the elevation knob for extended ranges. each click is about 1.765" at 100 yard. try using "Strelok" ballistics calculator on the app store. The free version is useful enough.

>its a short jamming piece of shit

Forgive my ignorance but do you mean failure to eject, so you get stovepipes?

I'm not sure if syrup SKS's come slathered in cosmoline or just what, but is it possible that whoever cleaned the cosmo off of your gun didn't get the internals fully cosmo free? Once that stuff heats up it gets gummy or even very hard. So that could be messing up the cycle.

Also, and I want you to take this to heart, maple syrup is NOT a valid gun lube. We know how you guys are up there, so just use some clean motor oil or something. NO maple syrup.
>>
>>33046901

nope! I mean the rounds will just nose dive into the magazine. sometimes the bullet will end up half way into the casing

Why do people do dumb things to the SKS? Rifle is fine. Tapco is not.
>>
>>33039375
They don't make them in that particular color anymore. Timbersmith SKS stock.

Cost something like $120 when I got mine. No modification to gun needed, although I did have to fit the stock a bit.

Biggest con is that it drives up the gun's weight by about 1.5 pounds. So that brings up your (roughly) 8.5lb rifle to 10lb.

I had to dremel the bayonet slot and drill the sling swivel myself.
