im the "gun guy" in my group and my buddy asked me about building an AR. I don't like AR's and havent looked at the prices too much. is $500 a reasonable budget too build a shooter? i told him it would take a while and hed have to wait for sales but it might be possible.

$500 is doable but hes going to have a basic bitch. at $600, he can get some nicer options. at $700ish, he can get the nicer options plus a freefloat rail. i think $700 is a good budget to go for

I've been wanting to build my first AR and can't make up my damn mind.

I'm going with a full PSA premium kit of some kind.... but can't decide between 16 or 20 inch. I like the shorter, lighter 16, but I also really like the full 3100fps you get with a 20 inch. I also like a full length gas system and having more room to put my hand closer to the muzzle

the rifle will be a general purpose weapon, i.e. home defense, truck gun, range toy, camp gun etc.

If you want my honest opinion, a 20" barrel with a solid stock is still going to be compact enough for most uses. It's not like we're talking about a Springfield rifled musket.
