That's the problem, Rhodesia was a transition state. They had a plan to move to popular rule and it was working, but the poms fucked it all to hell thinking that turning the country over to uneducated tribals with communist guns at their backs was a good idea after it failed three times already. Rhodesia was the best case scenario for post colonial Africa but it got fucked to hell by circumstance. The only barrier to tribals or otherwise native citizens voting were property, business or education requirement, and education was free. Making sure the population knew how to run the country first was paramount.

The main reason they wore shorts was cause it's fucking hot in Africa.

When the war started lots of white guys wore shorts and short sleeved shirts and didn't put camo paint on their faces and they ended up getting shot more often than guys who wore full length camo and painted their faces. Eventually the armed forces mandated (or at least trongly encouraged) that the soldiers wear full length camo and face paint to blend in better.

At least if the account I read a few years ago on an ex-rhodie website that I can't be assed to find is accurate.

This is one of the best Rhodesia myths out there.

The British were not responsible for the numerous failures and moves made by the Smith administration, nor were they alone in their criticism of Rhodesia. The heaviest opposition was from the US, who had wanted all colonial states vanquished even more than the Soviets did.

Rhodesia couldn't even build a proper working relationship with South Africa, to the point where meaningful cooperation was non existent. It was not a well run state by any means and the ridiculous decisions it made after UDI were obvious to all.

That's the compromise in which Ian Smith, the Rhodesian Front gave moderate African nationalist party like the United African National Council a chance to enter elections by reducing the qualification standards of voting. It was basically the same as the British training. They were still using the same field manuals up until the 70s. Parachuting techniques were different due to the more primitive aircraft and lower drop heights, but everything else was the same.

Minor changes were made after about 1972 or so, where conscription and lower resources forced some things to be abandoned.

Debatable. The US by no means was overtly friendly to Rhodesia, but chrome was being purchased from the country as late as 1977. The US was very slow to stem the flow until the UN started to prod into it. The sanctions were being broken left and right by American companies affiliated with UNIVEX. It is funny coming from Malik, the Soviets were one of the largest suppliers of arms to the insurgents during the entire bush war. One of the many reasons the Soviets wanted the colonial states gone was to increase their presence in Africa, which is a natural resource rich continent. Ending colonialism was a nice excuse to help prop up whoever would be more friendly to the Soviets in the region and put even more pressure on South Africa.

At the time South Africa was under an enormous amount of pressure to end Apartheid and had its own sanctions to worry about.

One of the major contributions to Rhodesia from South Africa were helicopters and pilots. Both were invaluable to fireforce efforts. The number of helicopters on loan isn't fully understood but in 1980 Zimbabwe was only left with about 8 Alouettes. That gives us some idea of how many were actually Rhodesian owned or piloted. The experience of South African pilots in Rhodesia would be invaluable during operation Reindeer and other COIN operations in Namibia and Angola.

Another misunderstood method of helping were the cooperation between Recces and what would become the Koevoet with various Rhodesian units. All of which were kept under the table as best as possible. Again, the experience of South Africans in Rhodesia would help in their own COIN efforts.

It wasn't the most effort the South Africans could have put forth but it was better than nothing, and did help to a certain extent.
