>>33009261
Yeah, the 5spd in the 4 won't fit the 6. A donor car is best so that you don't have to keep going back and forth if you forget to grab a part. I know people say that the 4 banger is reliable but that the power sucks (give up doing shit if it's an auto and 4) and that the 5spds are weak. Maybe check some junkyards for a rolled one?
>>
>>33009353

The AX5 isn't really weak, but it's built for what it's built for. The AX15 is significantly stronger.

The backstory on this YJ in greentext
>old YJ sits in grandpas yard for 10 years
>dad nigger rigs it (brakes and some gages really hated his lazy approach)
>I don't know anything about cars at the time so whatever
>I turn 18 (yeah I didn't get a license until my senior year) start driving it learn to drive stick
>still don't know much about cars
>drive it for a few more years put some KC lights on a light bar
>the brakes go out I tell my dad and he's like whatever
>dont have the money or knowledge to fix it at the time
>slide into a phone pole on a rainy day rather than rear end someone
>put another fender on for 175 dollars flare blinker light and all
>get 99 TJ drive that
>YJ sits in the yard waiting to be revived one day
The passenger side tire absorbed most of the impact. I was a little surprised it didn't fuck my alignment.
>>

2007 Nissan Xterra, 4wd, 6 Speed Manual, rear E-Locker, 33"

H2 was designed ground up and is capable off road

H3 however, is a glorified trailblazer
>>
>>33010101
If by "ground up", you mean they put an E-locker in a bloated Tahoe, sure. The H3 has front and rear e-lockers, better angles, and is smaller. All better for off roading.
>>
>>33009971
That trucks gonna be wanted in a few years; especially since they ended the Xline.. only downfall with them is you cant rockcrawl well since high center of grav.. but.. this is the future SHTF vehicle. honest to god
>Pic related, exactly what mine looks like.. only im running the same tires you are right now.

>>33009997
Im sorry : (
I did too look at the lib for a bit; but i dont trust new jeep... i feel like they are good now but wont hold up later.
That trucks solid as fuck, having standard issues sagging headliner, dash lights flicker here and there.. but thats nothing a weekend cant fix.
Drive train wise i cant argue at all its at 160k miles and it still feels great..
Storage space is awesome.
Seats 4, or 2 with more storage
Built in spot for medkit is awesome as fuck
Recessed windows for adding shelves
Roof rack is great.
Its just a solid reliable, not toooo bad on gas, midsize SUV that can handle trail just fine but dont expect to off road hardcore.

For SHTF vehicle.. ive debated this alot..this one takes the cake currently since its pretty easily obtainable / reliable and gives you enough MPG / capality balance..

The only thing i really regret about this vehicle is not getting the supercharged version

Correct, ish...

AM General developed the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV, nicknamed "Humvee") for military use as a heavy-duty replacement for the jeep. The vehicle later became available in a civilian version sold under the Hummer brand name.

Another familiar product from the AM General line was the Jeep DJ-5 series—a purpose built "Dispatch Jeep" 2-wheel drive (RWD) version of the Jeep CJ-5—used in huge numbers as a right-hand drive mail delivery vehicle by the United States Postal Service. Production of buses lasted only from 1974 until 1979.[3]

AM General line was the Jeep DJ-5 series—a purpose built "Dispatch Jeep" 2-wheel drive (RWD) version of the Jeep CJ-5 , made by a AMgen team.. and continued onto the c7 line until they sold off the jeep name.. but all the parts from 1970s till the last CJ in 1986 was infact AM general made

2012 Colorado 3.7L I-5 paired to the slushbox with GM's Govlock rearend. That rearend is a pain in the ass around town but godlike when you need more traction.

Its sitting on I-Pikes right now for the winter, but this truck goes through it all with no trouble.

Its only issue is terrible fuel efficiency due to the hills in my area.

It now has a bed cap that I have plans for.

nah, y60 patrol all day, all iron 4.2 injector pump diesel, no turbo but built for one, slow but will never die (nissan actually lightened the internals when they turboed them to give better response thats how heavy duty the old engines are)
y61 has the nicer body and interior, and the chassis and drivetrain are the same as the y60, but the y60 body will handle a abuse a bit better
mitsi's just arnt built like other jap cars, they just do not last as well.

Ive got an 09 ranger i paid off last year.

Id like one of those landcruisers i rode around in overseas but i dont think they sell them in the us. A cj5/jap equivelent would be pretty cool maybe, but i dont really want to spend more than my current car on one 60 years old.
Maybe if it gets wrecked il waste the insurance money. How to commit insurance fraud but not really

That is its downfall, but I tend to be careful about that, and when it does fail, there is a lot of options for its replacement thankfully.

The rear steps actually don't work that well. The older ones are easier to lift, and are probably a bit lighter. The new ones are pigfat.

My 2007 with 65k miles was $10.5k, but the timing chain already needs to be done. I should have spend $12.7k for a 2009 with 95k miles, but a 2.5" KING lift front and rear, plus ARB front bumper and Custom rear bumper.

Alas.

>>
>>33011059
The Mileage is so bad. Skip the 2005-2008 years because of the timing chain issue, and the Auto Trans cooler is internal to the radiator and starts leaking tranny fluid into your coolant.

Either go 2009+, or get a supercharged one from the old generation.

Skip Tacomas entirely. They're value is artificially inflated by normies perception of reliability.
>>
>>33011036
That's because of their shit mid 90s to mid 2000s business model of basically giving their cars away. Hell I think they still do crazy shit in Australia. Tons of people got loaded Pajeros and Tritons who could barely afford them. Extremely poor maintenance will bring any vehicle to its knees.

I found my Pajeros to be excellently engineered, overbuilt, and far more feature rich and comfortable than anything in its class, to include J80 and J100 LCs that I test drove while shopping. Their handling is great, as well, and they get even better the faster you go off road. Can't say that for a lot of factory off road cars.
>>
>>33011131
>Auto Trans cooler is internal to the radiator
That's pretty common. Even cars that have discrete transmission coolers will usually just put it in series with the integrated transmission cooler.

Guys, there really is no other answer than a CUCV. Cheap, heavy, durable, and 100% mechanical (no bullshit electronics to go out or give you sass). Make sure that a few common failure points have been recently maintained (such as the injection pump) and they are unstoppable. Not the fastest or the strongest, but they use old simple diesel engines that can run on pretty much anything that squirts through the injectors an keeps the pump lubricated.
>>
>>33016672

Even when "dead" they still run better than walking

>steam is coming out of hood, open it
>looks like a bunch of stoners hotboxed my engine bay
>don't want to call pops to come get me, or a tow truck
>fuck it
>drive back to my house
>2-3 minutes before arriving, engine temp gauge is rising mid-gauge (never goes that high)
>fuckfuckfuck
>pull into driveway and immediately shut off truck
>I caused an old freeze plug to leak because I revved the fuck out of my engine, lost all my coolant within 3-4 minutes of driving

I got the plug replaced a couple days later, it's been about 2 years since then and still runs fine

2.9 v6, 5spd. Averages about 22mpg. It's only 2wd w/ open diff but I've taken it off-road and never been stuck, mainly because I'm not a complete tard who drives straight into mudbogs. I want to put a locker in it someday though. Not bad for $850 and hauls firewood like a champ. One day I'll turn it into a technical if I find a Carl Gustav laying around

Boy the absolute best my little Nissan's ever done is 25mpg, highway. 18-20's the average, lower in the winter when I leave the front hubs locked all the time so I can engage 4wd from the cab if I need it.

I love the little meme truck for a ton of reasons but they abso-fucking-lutely have their downsides vs more modern pickups.

I mean it's pretty much in the name, unibody has a unitized (meaning integrated) body and frame. While body-on-frame, not frame-on-body, is just that.

Literally all bullshit you made up. SUVs are just what tall station wagons were called in America because station wagons weren't cool anymore.
>>
>>33031188
>Has nothing to do with what an SUV is.
>It doesn't matter that OG SUVs are built the same way as pickups and that crossover SUVs are built the same way as cars

Some SUVs are suited to off-road driving and some aren't. It's got everything to do with the way they're made. More and more """SUVs""" are literally minivans with bigger interiors and sharper angles because people want to pass themselves off as "outdoorsy" or tell themselves that they have a "good SHTF" vehicle.

The fact that you think the difference is immaterial speaks volumes about your knowledge.
>>
Nissan LEAF for now, Tesla Model 3 in the future.

Gasoline only last about a year. Then it starts decomposing and turning into things that kill engines. Diesel isn't much better. Depending on how SHTF things get, fuel can become critically short or unavailable.

An EV can be charged at your bug out location with solar panels. it is also less likely to break on you.

I've actually started looking into doing an electric conversion on an old Toyota pickup.
New electric cars aren't to my taste or needs at all. Get me an compact electric truck capable of hauling and off-road driving in 4 seasons of adverse terrain and I'll buy it in an instant.

I almost sold some of my furniture and computers to buy an -88 Toyota Supra, though. Once I finish uni I and get an actual job I'll probably get an 80s or early 90s Supra (if I find one with manual trans) for summers and a Nissan Kingcab or Toyota Hilux for winters.
My Polo feels like a fag-cart after seeing what other kommandos drive. At least it is black and a manual. Could swap it for a Golf with a 150hp 2,5 engine but don't have the money atm. Had to stop using warm water and dropped room temp already to pay for ammo and stuff like that.

Mechanic just wrapped up transmission rebuild, new low stall torque converter, steel planetary gear to replace aluminum, kevlar bands, new pump, new bearings, total rebuild, bulletproofed... I just hope I get it back soon before the happenings start up.

The transmission was the weakest link on this truck. Everything else is good. Cummins 12V, NP 205 transfer case, Dana 60 front, Dana 70 limited slip rear, leaf spring suspension, mostly made of steel, only 105k on the odometer so far.

I'll be adding a transfer tank of at least 20 gallons, factory tank is 30 gallons, average mpg hand calculated is 16 city 20 highway... potential range of 800 to 1000 miles with 50 gallons

Can be run on veggie oil diesel mix with right fuel filter. Could run on pure veggie oil, but it would need a heater to keep it from gelling
>>

It's a 1990 12 valve, pre intercooler days. They made this version 1989-1991 then went intercooled 91.5-93 The non intercooled have larger injectors and less electronics. I've got a 2nd gen intercooler and 60 mm turbo I'll put in when I have some time.

I wouldn't want an old dodge gasser personally. I bought it because of the engine and it was a decent deal.

How is this thinly disguised /o/ thread allowed on here, but discussions about gun laws aren't?
>>
>>33032683
I'm sure there is, they are a very basic diesel with no sensors to flip out. You can run them on used engine oil, tranny fluid, ect you just have to filter it first. I run a 5 micron filter to protect the VE fuel pump... I'd be comfortable experimenting with veggie and other used oils as long as I know they were filtered down to 5 micron. A blend of oil and diesel 50/50 is pretty safe too to keep the fuel from gelling. No sense wearing the injectors with larger particles
>>
>>33009056
A horse would be my first instinct, but as I neither possess one or know how to ride, no to your question.
>>
a bug out vehicle should not be a vehicle you use to get to your bug out location, the vehicle should already be at your bug out location and only be used to leave your bug out location if it has been compromised.

If you can't get to your bug out location in less than 30mins, you should have probably spent more money on a new air filter and not on that 3in lift kit and big o knobby tires.

your vehicle should be seen as a one way ticket.

the reason i bring this up is because i've spent $100s of bullshit on my SHTF truck, one day me and some of my family went camping deep innawoods out in the middle of nowhere, they were a day ahead of me before the rain, I'm about 4 miles from camp when my truck started feeling like it was dragging on, stop, fucking flat tire, fix, right when i start the motor BOOM Klnk klank klank,, dead motor, 3 miles out no cell service. what a waste of fucking money.

4X4 Subaru Outback. Maintenance is a breeze, cabin is fuckhueg and you can flip the rear seats forward to make a flat space for a bed, prone firing position, dragging supplies around, whatever the hell you feel like. It's even got a roof rack in case you feel like throwing some boxes up there or some other shit.

The 4X4 gives you a noticeable bonus in maneuverability, the suspension is fairly durable, and as long as you have spare parts, it will run forever. I have a 2001 Subaru Outback with 220,000 miles on it, no problems.

It's kinda hard to decide between the Outback and the Forester. I went with the latter because it takes up less space and has a taller roofline, which allows for a more upright seating position but one major drawback I found was that you can't lay the seats flat. That means sleeping in it is a bitch unless you're short and used to sleeping on a very firm half inclined bed.

Also as much as /o/ likes to joke about Mustangs lolcantturn they're wrong. Mustangs can't grip. They can turn very well. Subarus can't grip but Foresters REALLY can't turn. The turn radius is around 40', so maneuvering through parking lots is a total nightmare. It's a pretty big issue offroad too because if there's a tight squeeze you need to do a multi-point maneuver by which time you will break up any loose ground and start to dig the wheels in. It's honestly my biggest complaint about the car. Turns like a friggin barge.

Yes I think it would, from the little bit I could find about it quickly it has mechanical injection so you should be good running alternative fuels. I guess NA is for naturally aspirated, that would make for a very durable diesel. Turbo makes more power, but it also puts more strain on the engine... I bet it'd be a very slow, but very reliable truck with great fuel economy.

It pains me the US hasn't had small 4 cylinder diesel trucks until recently... and they are overly complicated, expensive, and unproven. Bummer.

A 4BT in jeep scrambler would be nice.
