How is it that an M1A1 is a tank, and an M4A1 is an assault rifle?
Are you retarded or something? "M" just means model. It is arbitrarily assigned to different pieces and the context determines what you're talking about. Nobody is going to think you're actually talking about a Garand when you're talking about an Abrams.

M1 (garand, disintegrating link, steel helmet)
Shit thread desu
>>33006814
it's in the way US Category system works desu
>abrams full designation
tank, main battle, M1A1 "abrams"
>M4 carbine full designation
Carbine, M4A1

Then why do fighter jets (more or less) go from F-1 to F-22?
Model 1 Alteration 1 Abrams tank
Colt/FN Model 4 Alteration 1 Carbine/Rifle
>>33007001
There's been over a hundred different 'F' models # designations
Why are we still using M1A1's when we could be using M4A1E8?
I mean bigger number is better

Simple, The F designation was used on planes that were adopted after 1947. At this time the USAF was a separate branch from the army. Which is why back in WWII when it was the USAAF and the planes had a P designation.
This is also why in the AF, the guns / rifles have a GAU prefix over the M prefix used in the army.

this confuses me greatly

You see, Cletus. Just because they both have "M","A" and "1" in them, doesnt mean they are the same thing.
Think of it this way, Your homeboy "Dymitirous" isnt the same as your homeboy "Damarcus", While they both have many of the same letters, they are both not the same homeboy, but are two different people.

Thats an M4A1 (76)W HVSS

Should have gone with the Brit system of <name> Mark I, II, III, IIIb etc. Much more classy. America did not adopt names for most of their equipment until the Brits started to name Lend Lease vehicles.

The correct designation would be M4A1E8
>The E8 designation would be any sherman that was upgraded with the HVSS suspension.
>Pic related, M4A2E8
If the tank were to only have the 76mm turret the catalog designation would be M4A1 (76)W, the second it gets the HVSS fitted it becomes and M4A1E8
Also quick factoid, there were many 75mm M4A3 shermans equipped with the HVSS, these tanks are cataloged as M4A3(75)E8
This shit sounds confusing at first but once you know the nomenclature it's what makes shermans amazingly fun as you can cobble shit together
Like a M4A1E9 , M4A1 75mm gun, VVSS w/ E9 double duckbill VVSS track upgrade

This fellow here is an M4A1(76)WE9
>M4A1 W
>T23 76mm turrer
>E9 double duckbill upgrade (the double duckbills are missing, but if you look at where the sprockets are you will see a larger gap between the sprocket and the transmission cover. Also the you will see the addition of the extended fenders, this is to cover the extra width of the tracks with the two sets of duckbills mounted
This is the type of shit that gets shermanopyles hard
