I was reading a bit of the leatherneck forum, and marines were saying you can go any MOS and apply for MARSOC later assuming you meet the standards to get reclassed into an operator.

What's a good strategy for going MARSOC later down the line that will maximize my skill set? What MOS is elder-god tier in the marines?

The military trains Intelligence Officers to be generalists while the civilian world trains specialists, but they have the option of specializing as long as they maintain certain general competencies. By the time they hit Staff Officer they are expected to transition toward more administration than being in the field.

Junior enlisted only do low-level analysis or collect technical forms of intel like SIGINT or MASINT. They do not do HUMINT source ops.

NCOs and Warrant Officers are specialists, usually in a form of collection. They have a longer window of doing specialized forms of collection but take as long as a decade cutting their teeth as junior enlisted to get to it.

All five branches have Special Agents that do Counterintelligence and some HUMINT. In the Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard they pull double duty as Law Enforcement. The Army splits up Law Enforcement and Counterintelligence. The Marines have CI and HUMINT as part of the same program, but it's new and kind of wonky right now, and they leave LEO work to NCIS afaik.

The CIA and other civilian agencies are not very reliable in war zones because their people are used to working out of embassies. They don't like to stick their heads out of the wire, and the ones ballsy enough to actually do it tend to get blown up more often than your average Case Officer.

Keep in mind that people running around actually doing HUMINT or CI Force Protection have a higher casualty rate than Infantry.

I am going into Army ROTC sophomore year of college(I'm a HS senior right now) so that I have a chance at going to rasp, but I got a USMC hat from the recruiters' pullup competition thing they do, and I need a hat to wear while I grow out my hair. Which also brings me to my next question, can I keep long hair in ROTC?

Hey /meg/, I've got a couple years before I enlist (finishing up a degree) and I want to try out for the Rangers when I go in.

I saw a thread on /fit/ that said that if you want to get into the required shape that all you need is this book and a separate program for running and swimming.

Occasionally someone on /fit/ knows what they are talking about but way too much of it is 300+ pound NEETs who have never exercised in their lives spouting memes and broscience, so I'd figure I’d get a second opinion here.

Is The Naked Warrior + separate swimming/running programs a good approach to get into the required shape, or am I being memed? Everywhere I look online it seems like half on the internet loves this book and the other half hates it. Would I be better off focusing more specifically on push-ups/sit ups?

Is it what you want to do AND do you intend for your enlistment to be only one or two terms? If the answers is yes and you're smart and can do an in-demand, well paying-job later then not necessarily. Plenty of people join the military just for the experience and if that's the case then you should do whatever you feel will help you get the most out of it. Go in, get a degree when you get out, and start your real career (the quicker the better).

Now, if you're smart and you want to make an entire career out of the military then yeah, you might be retarded. Do something where you can put those brains to work for Uncle Sam and build up experience that will translate into a job in the civilian world (this does not include infantry or immediate variants like Recon unless you are an officer and can claim "Leadership Experience"). Even Marines have jobs like this. Cross train later if you're already locked into infantry for now.

If you got the cash then shell out for a Military Athlete program.

Navy Special Warfare Physical Training Guide is pretty good too, but it can be a bit tricky to follow if you haven't been active in awhile.

I got separated from the Navy a ways back under erroneous enlistment. My re-entry code was RE3E, which means ineligible without a waiver.

Fast forward a few years after deciding not to pursue the military, and I wanted to get into police work. One of the pre-reqs is must be eligible for reenlistment if you have prior military service (how depressingly funny that if I hadn't tried to enlist at all, this problem would not exist). A recruiting officer at my local PD said I would need to get that navy waiver before I'd be considered for the police.

What are my chances of getting a waiver from the Navy for me to pursue a career that has nothing to do with the Navy? And how would I begin the process?

Short answer: yes. If it gets to the approving authority, it will depend on his/her subjective judgement based on the "whole person" concept, usually determined in an interview. There are guidelines and regulations that may stop it before it gets to that point, however.

Medical waivers are branch-specific. If then Navy turns you down you can try your luck in the Army and so on.

How picky services are depends on how big they are compared to how many people want to join. In terms of pickiness (from most to least) it basically goes

Coast Guard > Air Force > Marines > Navy > Army

Certain branches also treat different conditions with different severity. CG has shellfish allergies as a non-waiverable condition, and the Marines approve basically no mental health waivers. Army would care a lot less about both.

How many waivers are granted is also inseparably tied to the recruiting environment. A bad economy causes people to flock to the military, meaning recruiters can be a lot more choosy about who gets let in. Coming off of the Obama years, with a bad economy and big military downsizing, waivers were not impossible to get but basically the next closest thing. As Trump expands the military and hopefully the economy improves your chances for getting a waiver granted in a different branch may improve. I'd recommend waiting until big military expansions hit and working on PT and ASVAB scores in the meantime so you look as appealing as possible. Also, for taking medicine the more years you have between being off of it and your application the better, so you may want to wait a few years if that was an issue (once you start getting to 3 or 4 years since your last dose that effect starts to diminish though).

The process is a bitch though. Currently they only have rules for people transitioning while already in the air force, not for people joining. Thanks to some really fucked up laws, my birthstate won't change my birth certificate no matter what I do. So right now it's all up in the air whether or not I can even be accepted, but I've been actively talking with my recruiter about what's gonna happen.

Why join the Air Force? Well for one I want a comfy office job or something mechanical in nature. I'd love to learn how to fix planes or some cool hands-on shit like that. I scored pretty high on the practice ASVAB so my hopes are high. Second off, it's a no brainer economically. Give me a better deal than 20-30k a year, subsidized living quarters, free food, and a college education. I don't spend my money on a lot so I'm thinking I'll save up most of it and in 4 years time, assuming god emperor donald trump doesn't send me to die, I'll have enough money to go live abroad for a bit, visit places I've always wanted to.

Am I stupid as fuck for thinking I'll integrate well in the Air Force? Am I joining for the wrong reasons? Like I love my country and everything, and I fucking hate commies and those who would tread on freedom. But I'm mostly just joining because I want a good blue-collar job.

Does anyone here struggle with their faith in the nation in some ways? It's one thing to be a soldier, and I love being a soldier. And it's easy to understand the mission when you have a good commander, but sometimes I wonder about the civilian leadership in this country. Is it wrong to doubt the reason behind the wars, and does it affect your morale? I hate ISIS; they are barbaric and I have no qualms about killing them, that's not a problem. But are we truly fighting in our own interests in a coherent and intelligent way, or are we fighting for the sake of it? I would suggest getting yourself a really nice pair of running shoes. When I tried to initially start running I had some shitty shoes because I am cheap faggot, that in combination with me pushing my limits really hard I had some horrible shin splints for over almost 2 months. When I felt like I could start running again without literally snapping my shins, I went out and bought a 120 dollar pair of running shoes that felt significantly better. I got a pair of Asics Gel-Cumulus 18's. I am by no means a running veteran nor am I a connoisseur in running shoes, but when I put them on my feet and walked around in them I knew I had the buy them.

My other suggestion is to also limit yourself. I know it might be tempting to push your limits for quicker progress, but if you are new to running it can screw you up really bad like it did with me. Gradually work yourself up so your body has plenty of time to adjust.

Hey, /meg/, I'm an active duty soldier serving in the US army in a recon unit (I'll withold particular information because it's pretty easy to determine which for those in the service right now, all I'll say is that we're not SOF).

My problem is that I made a mistake, I fucked up back in October of last year, I took a field grade level article 15 and what I did now still threatens me getting chaptered out of the army. It's nothing that deserved a other than honorable or dishonorable, the lowest I'll get is a general discharge.

The thing is, I've been fighting to keep in service and my command (all the way down to my squad NCO to all the way up to my First Sergeant and my company CO) has been vouching for me and sending recommendations up to the brigade to keep me in.

It doesn't seem like I'll leave but my situation has been flip flopping since November. I have a 127 GT score and my APFT regularly is 260-270, my highest was 281 (could have done better) and my lowest was 250. My first sergeant has pretty much given me an ultimatum; if I stay in I'll most likely never promote after E6, I'll never be able to get my security clearance (won't say which) back, and I'll never get to try out for Ranger bat or SF ever.

My question is; Do you think it is possible (or a good idea) for me to join the French Foreign Legion or the Novo Russian Foreign Legion if I get chaptered out of the army?

Hopping jobs every 2-4 years is pretty typical in the civilian world now too. It's not that you're quitting, it's that you're climbing the ladder up to a better position.

For most people, having a career in the military would be as easy as choosing to have one. The vast majority don't make that choice, because they don't enjoy it enough to do it for 20+ years.

Like privileges, pay ranks, life styles, like when you get to move out of the dorms, and whether or not you get a room mate. Etc.
