I was reading a bit of the leatherneck forum, and marines were saying you can go any MOS and apply for MARSOC later assuming you meet the standards to get reclassed into an operator.

What's a good strategy for going MARSOC later down the line that will maximize my skill set? What MOS is elder-god tier in the marines?

I'm a CTT, on a ship I mainly do threat recognition (see signal, is it a missile? No, okay is it a warship? No, okay. "Correlates COMNAV") shore side you deal with more actual intel and spend weeks figuring out about the signal and work with NSA or CIA.
>>
>>33007126
CTN is "leet hackerman" pretty cool res team blue team pen testing stuff. CTR track comms signals CTI is linguist but unless you're with muhreens as an interpreter you'll be on a shore site sifting through hours of chatter. CTM fix CTR equipment. That's it.

Do the different branches' Intelligence Officers/Specialists/Warrant Officers generally all do the same stuff? Or does each have different focuses/specialties/methods of collection etc?

What does Army Intel look like?
What does Navy Intel look like?
What does Air Force Intel look like?
What does Marine Corps Intel look like?
What does Coast Guard Intel look like?
>>
>>33008374

The military trains Intelligence Officers to be generalists while the civilian world trains specialists, but they have the option of specializing as long as they maintain certain general competencies. By the time they hit Staff Officer they are expected to transition toward more administration than being in the field.

Junior enlisted only do low-level analysis or collect technical forms of intel like SIGINT or MASINT. They do not do HUMINT source ops.

NCOs and Warrant Officers are specialists, usually in a form of collection. They have a longer window of doing specialized forms of collection but take as long as a decade cutting their teeth as junior enlisted to get to it.

All five branches have Special Agents that do Counterintelligence and some HUMINT. In the Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard they pull double duty as Law Enforcement. The Army splits up Law Enforcement and Counterintelligence. The Marines have CI and HUMINT as part of the same program, but it's new and kind of wonky right now, and they leave LEO work to NCIS afaik.
>>
>>33008633
Thanks for the thorough response. What I dont understand, how exactly would Navy, Air Force or Coast Guard collect HUMINT? Like I cant imagine these guys going outside the wire meeting with sources very much... (especially the Navy... as they are probably on a ship most of the time...)

What I mean is, for the most part are most Intel officers in the military just relegated to sitting inside on base in front of a computer never really getting to go outside the wire or on some interesting operations?
>>
>>33008769

The same way anybody collects HUMINT. I mean fuck, do you think that Army or Marine guys go out to meet with and recruit sources while rolling with a couple of MRAPs and a squad 20 deep?

They are typically on a base or embassy disguised as civilians and are low key going in and out to meet with sources.

>Coast Guard

Their CI is the blackest of the black, and CI is already the blackest of the intelligence disciplines.

The CIA and other civilian agencies are not very reliable in war zones because their people are used to working out of embassies. They don't like to stick their heads out of the wire, and the ones ballsy enough to actually do it tend to get blown up more often than your average Case Officer.

Keep in mind that people running around actually doing HUMINT or CI Force Protection have a higher casualty rate than Infantry.

>Is the Coast Guard thing a joke or not?

CGIS has all kinds of crazy powers under DHS and is not bound by posse comitatus. They are the spookiest of spook.

The average ones don't do HUMINT. HUMINT has to be specifically requested.

Try working out and then you will have more useful skills, meaning endurance and strength. I used to be like you, but I burnt out of political philosophy and just read /lit/ stuff for a long time. Since I assume you probably read a lot, try reading books about other, more practical stuff. Get a good survival guide and read it, then go solo /out/. Get a book on woodworking and then build shit, or a cookbook and cook shit. Philosophy is useful in running your own life, but unless you want to be a meme Lord homeless cynic, get some practical skills under your belt. Then, you will be able to generally do whatever you want in the military.

Hey /meg/, I've got a couple years before I enlist (finishing up a degree) and I want to try out for the Rangers when I go in.

I saw a thread on /fit/ that said that if you want to get into the required shape that all you need is this book and a separate program for running and swimming.

Occasionally someone on /fit/ knows what they are talking about but way too much of it is 300+ pound NEETs who have never exercised in their lives spouting memes and broscience, so I'd figure I’d get a second opinion here.

Is The Naked Warrior + separate swimming/running programs a good approach to get into the required shape, or am I being memed? Everywhere I look online it seems like half on the internet loves this book and the other half hates it. Would I be better off focusing more specifically on push-ups/sit ups?

Up to you.

I'm in a rough spot, as I am just about to transfer from a CC, meaning 2-3 more years at uni. If I abandon my post now, the past few years would have been a complete waste, with nothing to show for it.

So I'm toughing it out, but working out lifting 3 times a week, cardio on off days.

I'll be ready when I graduate, that's for sure. Except I'm going to be a little older (~27) and that could be annoying as a boot.

I'm going to leave soon as a corpsman in the Navy. It's my understanding that you can choose a specialization of some sort to study or practice within the realm of medicine i.e urologist, radiologist, shit like that if I remember correctly.

Is it what you want to do AND do you intend for your enlistment to be only one or two terms? If the answers is yes and you're smart and can do an in-demand, well paying-job later then not necessarily. Plenty of people join the military just for the experience and if that's the case then you should do whatever you feel will help you get the most out of it. Go in, get a degree when you get out, and start your real career (the quicker the better).

Now, if you're smart and you want to make an entire career out of the military then yeah, you might be retarded. Do something where you can put those brains to work for Uncle Sam and build up experience that will translate into a job in the civilian world (this does not include infantry or immediate variants like Recon unless you are an officer and can claim "Leadership Experience"). Even Marines have jobs like this. Cross train later if you're already locked into infantry for now.

I don't know if I'm fucked or not.

I got separated from the Navy a ways back under erroneous enlistment. My re-entry code was RE3E, which means ineligible without a waiver.

Fast forward a few years after deciding not to pursue the military, and I wanted to get into police work. One of the pre-reqs is must be eligible for reenlistment if you have prior military service (how depressingly funny that if I hadn't tried to enlist at all, this problem would not exist). A recruiting officer at my local PD said I would need to get that navy waiver before I'd be considered for the police.

What are my chances of getting a waiver from the Navy for me to pursue a career that has nothing to do with the Navy? And how would I begin the process?

Will it be easier for me to get a waiver if I score high on the ASVAB? >Will it be easier for me to get a waiver if I score high on the ASVAB?
Short answer: yes. If it gets to the approving authority, it will depend on his/her subjective judgement based on the "whole person" concept, usually determined in an interview. There are guidelines and regulations that may stop it before it gets to that point, however.

Alright, I want to join the navy because A) I want to travel around the world and experience life at sea and B) I am a repressed homosexual. I am already going to school for CompE in a few months on a hefty scholarship, so I figure I might as well do ROTC instead of just enlisting afterwards. I know it would probably make sense to choose an MOS close to my degree, but I don't give that much of a shit about CompE, I want to travel the world and be at sea. I really don't know how ROTC works, but I do know it makes you an officer, so what MOS should I choose to travel and be at sea?

Medical waivers are branch-specific. If then Navy turns you down you can try your luck in the Army and so on.

How picky services are depends on how big they are compared to how many people want to join. In terms of pickiness (from most to least) it basically goes

Coast Guard > Air Force > Marines > Navy > Army

Certain branches also treat different conditions with different severity. CG has shellfish allergies as a non-waiverable condition, and the Marines approve basically no mental health waivers. Army would care a lot less about both.

How many waivers are granted is also inseparably tied to the recruiting environment. A bad economy causes people to flock to the military, meaning recruiters can be a lot more choosy about who gets let in. Coming off of the Obama years, with a bad economy and big military downsizing, waivers were not impossible to get but basically the next closest thing. As Trump expands the military and hopefully the economy improves your chances for getting a waiver granted in a different branch may improve. I'd recommend waiting until big military expansions hit and working on PT and ASVAB scores in the meantime so you look as appealing as possible. Also, for taking medicine the more years you have between being off of it and your application the better, so you may want to wait a few years if that was an issue (once you start getting to 3 or 4 years since your last dose that effect starts to diminish though).

It should take you at least 1-2 months to get fit enough to barely pass the physical. 3-4 months to do even better, and you should continuously have a training regimen and diet plan which is consistent because my assumption is that you have been doing exercises for 2 weeks straight with no rest days and I can't guess as to what your diet is but you should improve it anyway.

Get ready for lots of laughs friends.

I'm a tranny, started before all this sjw horseshit back when I was 13. I've been living as a woman for a long time now, and pass well.

And here's the kicker, I'm planning on joining the Air Force.

*insert jokes about the air force being full of pussy faggots here*

The process is a bitch though. Currently they only have rules for people transitioning while already in the air force, not for people joining. Thanks to some really fucked up laws, my birthstate won't change my birth certificate no matter what I do. So right now it's all up in the air whether or not I can even be accepted, but I've been actively talking with my recruiter about what's gonna happen.

Why join the Air Force? Well for one I want a comfy office job or something mechanical in nature. I'd love to learn how to fix planes or some cool hands-on shit like that. I scored pretty high on the practice ASVAB so my hopes are high. Second off, it's a no brainer economically. Give me a better deal than 20-30k a year, subsidized living quarters, free food, and a college education. I don't spend my money on a lot so I'm thinking I'll save up most of it and in 4 years time, assuming god emperor donald trump doesn't send me to die, I'll have enough money to go live abroad for a bit, visit places I've always wanted to.

Am I stupid as fuck for thinking I'll integrate well in the Air Force? Am I joining for the wrong reasons? Like I love my country and everything, and I fucking hate commies and those who would tread on freedom. But I'm mostly just joining because I want a good blue-collar job.

That would be retarded, don't listen to that guy. There's a reason the Bigger, Faster, Stronger program is used for pretty much every high school football team in the nation. Look it up and incorporate the PE tests into your weekly routine. Run on off-days or on the opposite end of your lifting days (run mornings, lift evenings or vice versa)
>>
>>33024511

I don't even lift, I just do bodyweight exercises and cardio. I don't really care about becoming strong or /fit/, I just want to get better at pull ups.

Alternatively, if you're generally in shape except your pullup game is weak, go rock climbing. I have a BMI of 29 and like +20% bodyfat, but I can still do weighted pullups for reps. I attribute that to rock climbing (on top of normal pullups when lifting)

Does anyone here struggle with their faith in the nation in some ways? It's one thing to be a soldier, and I love being a soldier. And it's easy to understand the mission when you have a good commander, but sometimes I wonder about the civilian leadership in this country. Is it wrong to doubt the reason behind the wars, and does it affect your morale? I hate ISIS; they are barbaric and I have no qualms about killing them, that's not a problem. But are we truly fighting in our own interests in a coherent and intelligent way, or are we fighting for the sake of it? That's a good reason and we need to maintain strength, but the cost is huge and our economy is bad. I also think Israel is a bad ally, so I question how destabilized the region is and how it affects our European allies. I want to serve my country and make her stronger, not weaker. Does anyone else think like this?

Let's assume it takes maybe 5 min per set, 9 sets a day, 3 in morning 3 noon 3 evening for 3 days, then 2 rest then 2 on 2 rest and 3 on. It's not going to fucking destroy his arms. Do you actually work out at all or are you just recommending books?

>>33020662
But your first job out of college is practically entirely dependent on your gpa, and from there on out subsequent jobs are going to be based on the experience you've gained from your first job. A low gpa is going to set you back from the start.
>>
>>33025585

I haven't recommended a single book, faggot, the program is free to use. Hell, I don't even use that program but I know it's closer to what he might want than ruining his shoulders by doing what was originally suggested. You saying 45 minutes implies it's one workout session. If you meant he should spread it out over the course of a day then you should have said that initially.

Even after all that I'd still say some sort of general fitness program coupled with pullups and whatever else you need for the PT test would work better overall than just 9 sets of pullups for five days a week on top of his spooky skeleton bodyweight shit. Even better if he started rock climbing on an indoor wall but that would just be icing on the cake.

Guys I singed up for the Army, I swear in a second time this coming Tuesday and probably ship off that same day to basic. I'd like to know more about how I'm gonna be stationed and what it'll be like for my MOS.

I scored 85 on the ASVAB and chose 74 Delta, CBRN, for my job. I also got a bonus for the quick ship so now I'm just waiting to get up and go. I'm also confused on how my transfer from Georgia to Missouri will go down.

Can anyone tell me how the MOS will play out? My recruiter had it before he switched to recruiting.

>It's how I'm feeling right now.

You're running too slow. Run faster and you will naturally run with the balls of your feet. Try hill sprints to build strength and do jumping jacks for cardio as an alternative.
>>
>>33026845
>You're running too slow
I doubt it, but maybe you're right. I try to run as fast as possible without sprinting, the only time when I really slow down is by the end of the workout when I'm really worn out and can't keep up the pace.

Do you happen to be a tall fag?

I'm 6 and half feet tall and I have the same issue. I am beginning the think it's because I don't have the proper bone density to support my long as fuck legs and it will take time before I can even push myself.

I would suggest getting yourself a really nice pair of running shoes. When I tried to initially start running I had some shitty shoes because I am cheap faggot, that in combination with me pushing my limits really hard I had some horrible shin splints for over almost 2 months. When I felt like I could start running again without literally snapping my shins, I went out and bought a 120 dollar pair of running shoes that felt significantly better. Ever since then I have been running with very little problems.
>>
>>33026914
Not (you) but I saw at least 10 people wearing Brony shirts in 'A' school. Nearly everyone was weebs and DnD/Video game geeks.
>>
>>33026937
Not at all, I'm only 5'10.

What shoes did you buy? I have Nike Lunarglides which are supposed to be good enough. I even bought insoles to cushion the shocks from hitting the pavement.
>>
>>33026794
Shin compression sleeves + Ibuprofin. Getting fitted for shoes at a real running shop may also help.
>>
>>33026991
>Shin compression sleeves
I got those
>Ibuprofin
Isn't that a temporary solution? I mean sure if it can stop the pain it's good but should I really take it regularly?
>>
>>33026946

>>
>>33026950
I got a pair of Asics Gel-Cumulus 18's. I am by no means a running veteran nor am I a connoisseur in running shoes, but when I put them on my feet and walked around in them I knew I had the buy them.

My other suggestion is to also limit yourself. I know it might be tempting to push your limits for quicker progress, but if you are new to running it can screw you up really bad like it did with me. Gradually work yourself up so your body has plenty of time to adjust.
>>
>>33026995
IB mainly reduces inflamation. I'm sure it's not good to take much long term but everyone in the military takes high doses everyday for years.
>>
>>33027010

>>
>>33026950
Nike a shit. Asics, NB, or brooks are good.
>>
>>33027035
Can it really come only from the shoes?
Obviously the shoes are important but since I use insoles I shouldn't get shin splints just from that
I run on pavement/asphalt, maybe I should try something else?
>>
>>33027026
Well I have only been running about 2-3 times a week for 3 weeks since I finally got back into the groove of things. Every time I run I still have some slight pains in my shins, I make sure to ice them but more importantly I try to give them around 2 days to fully heal so that I don't cause any major issues. I have been noticing that the inflammation and pain have become a little bit more manageable now that I have started to run regularly, so hopefully this is a sign they disappear altogether at some point in the future.
>>
>>33027067
Ok. Yeah 2-3 times a week seems good enough.

Try running on a gravel/sandy/dirt trail if you can. Your joints will thank you.
>>
>>33027175
Take your foot and rest the ball of your foot against a wall so that your foot is the slope of a triangle with the floor and wall. Then push your body towards the wall so that your shin is moving closer to the top of your foot. This should extend your achilles and you should feel it right in there. This worked for me when I got shin splints.

Hey, /meg/, I'm an active duty soldier serving in the US army in a recon unit (I'll withold particular information because it's pretty easy to determine which for those in the service right now, all I'll say is that we're not SOF).

My problem is that I made a mistake, I fucked up back in October of last year, I took a field grade level article 15 and what I did now still threatens me getting chaptered out of the army. It's nothing that deserved a other than honorable or dishonorable, the lowest I'll get is a general discharge.

The thing is, I've been fighting to keep in service and my command (all the way down to my squad NCO to all the way up to my First Sergeant and my company CO) has been vouching for me and sending recommendations up to the brigade to keep me in.

It doesn't seem like I'll leave but my situation has been flip flopping since November. I have a 127 GT score and my APFT regularly is 260-270, my highest was 281 (could have done better) and my lowest was 250. My first sergeant has pretty much given me an ultimatum; if I stay in I'll most likely never promote after E6, I'll never be able to get my security clearance (won't say which) back, and I'll never get to try out for Ranger bat or SF ever.

My question is; Do you think it is possible (or a good idea) for me to join the French Foreign Legion or the Novo Russian Foreign Legion if I get chaptered out of the army?

I don't wanna be specific in what I did. Had to do 45/45 days of restriction and extra duty over December-January for it. Let's just say fucking an officer's wife would have been easier on me. I've also been flagged (no positive action) for up to 12 months; no schools, no changing duty station (also I haven't been in that long, this is my first duty station).

There's a good chance they'll keep you in the same field if that's what you want, but it's not guaranteed by any means. And the inverse is true. You can choose a different field but they might decide to keep you in your old one.

> I dont know why i would get hired in any job knowing im just going to quit in 4 years

Hopping jobs every 2-4 years is pretty typical in the civilian world now too. It's not that you're quitting, it's that you're climbing the ladder up to a better position.

For most people, having a career in the military would be as easy as choosing to have one. The vast majority don't make that choice, because they don't enjoy it enough to do it for 20+ years.
