I think it's excellent for its intended purpose:

Firing standard 9mm ammo at subsonic velocity with an integrated suppressor.

It's also iconic.

Performance wise there are likely better, more modern solutions.

This. It's specifically designed to use standard NATO supersonic 9mm and still be Hollywood-tier spooky quiet. The trade-off is the sharp loss of energy.

That being said, it's a fucking MP5. It kills people dead, and organizations around the world love it. It's THE submachine gun.
