I don't need one for my own security, which I'm trying to convey here.

One of my neighbours are in their 90's they've never had a gun and never had a issue their whole lives.

I think people in the cities or wherever you lot are worry too much about safety.

Well congratulations. You live in a small community where you know pretty much everyone.
How wonderful for you to be able to trust everybody in your village.
In cities and whatnot, since it's impossible to get to know the other tens of thousands of people, it's not really feasible to do what you do in your small village.
Not to mention the higher population seems to breed a small segment of the population to be driven towards committing crime. Whether this is mainly due to mental disorder, financial problems, or just plain greed is up for debate.
The point is, in population centers, there are more than likely people who want to either hurt you or take your stuff illegally and it's just common sense to lock your doors at all times at that point.
It's not that weird when you think about it.
You'll start locking your doors when somebody decides to sack your village for damn near free shit.
