Thermals are better and cheaper for the average joe.
Only decent NV will cost you a good car.
>>
>>32994564

Interested in thermals for my AR for hog hunting in the great country of Texas. Anything you'd recommend?

Recording capability would be cool, too.

I'd probably run a combo with a helmet mounted NV for navigation. Maybe one of those cheap-o IR NVs that need a IR light source.
>>
>>32994564
A good used car maybe you can get a unfilmed wp pvs14 for under 4k.
>>
>>32994564
Thermals are good for scopes, but nvg are better for orientation.
>>
>>32994601
>Scope FLIR ThermoSight or Armasight OPMOD Zeus 3
>Spotter scope / tracker - Leupold LTO Tracker

The tracker from leupold is the cheaper alternative and you can use it to spot out targets then use your rifle if you can't really afford the scopes.

Also the leupold is fun as fuck to play with, gonna buy one myself since I can't keep borrowing my brother in law one for shit and giggles. Also it's pretty cheap, 800 bucks or so compared to the real scopes.
>>
>>32994564
This is a terrible post by a poorfag. Skip the Torrey Pines shit thermal unless you're a terrible poorfag. A good Gen 3 costs $2k-$3.5k. Good thermals are $4k-$8k.

it's quite literally the opposite.

>PNV-57Es cost $300-$500
>PVS-7s cost ~$1k-$2k
lol no

active IR units are fine for observing/tracking targets, they're not so great for use while walking about. With a proper setup you can make them work tho

Fuck have people been, oh wait, he said unfilmed.
Oh well. You can get autogated PVS-14's for $3,000.
>Tube won't burn up in exposure to bright light
>I hear there's less halo effect, though that could just be conjecture.
>only slightly better if unfilmed.
Just a baseline $3,000 PVS-14 with the right features should do, bro.
>I like how compact the Russian NVG's are getting, they may not be doing the same on mounting stability and depth of field, but they're certainly getting very compact and lightweight.
>>
>>33000280
Op here.Aren't pretty much all pvs14s autogated now? I actually assemble them. If I was going to buy one I would spend the extra on the unfilmed wp. The specs on them tend to be a lot higher and there is usually less spots and or peppers then an itt tube.
>>
>>33000280
prices for PVS-14s have really cratered, if you can afford the investment they're a really excellent deal right now.

>I like how compact the Russian NVG's are getting
the Ruskies have always had some interesting units, hopefully the OG optics manufacturers can get their shit together and start making neat stuff again. I've heard Izyum is fugged due to their location in eastern Ukraine.
>>
>>32994530
bumping for interest, ex-soviet things too pls, and thermals pls because its the future.
>>
What about binos anybody have or want a set of ab mod 3 they are personally my favorite because of the option to run it as as a monocular or binocular I like the look of the new dtnvgs as well
>>
m8s should I get pvs 7 or pvs 14? For hiking and what not
>>
>>33004328
14 pvs7 are shit and parts are getting harder to come by with a 7 you get all the disadvantages of a binocular with none of the advantages and none of the benefits from a monocular

I'm addicted to the world of green, this whole thread should be in green text. lol

I can't believe how hard it is to get 1980s gen-2 surplus in Canada. Specifically the PVS-4. We can't even get parts out of the States for them or the Vietnam era PVS-2's. I have a TVS-5 that just needs the upper housing to be complete.

Was given a bunch of gen-3 ITT MX-10130 tubes that can only be used in the PVS-7 goggles. Can we get the goggles separate like in the USA? Nope! must buy new for $5,000 CAD.

Thanks for letting me vent. Anyone care to drone some ..uh "telescope" parts across the 49th for me? :-) jk.
>>
>>33001940
no, some PVS-14's particularly legacy units if you can find them for sale, or ones with Harris XLS tubes tend not to be autogated. You can get an XLS PVS-14 Gen 3 for $2,400.
>>33002909
Like I said, they may not be improving the overall quality of things like mounting (maybe they are, my autism for night vision doesn't allow me to read Russian) , but it should be comfy as FUCK to wear something like a PNN-14. I'm STILL really butthurt about obama's sanctions against russia preventing the Wolf optics night vision from coming to the USA, Tim for the military arms channel gets a pair, but ol' Anon? No, fuck him and the concept of anything ever introducing competition to the price fixing cornered market of night vision goggles, seeing as Harris and ITT are THE ONLY TWO manufacturers of night vision in the united states. I wanted gen 3 cheaper than $3,000 without being a defective unit. Is that such an evil thing?
>>
I own a PVS-14 and just checked out this study.

www.dtic.mil/cgi-bin/GetTRDoc?AD=ADA294018

It looks like bino NVGs can be quite a difference from a monocular. Has anyone used a bino setup able to chime in on this? I'm thinking about getting a bino setup sometime in the future.
>>
>>33006491
>aint downloading that shit

yea 14s are lighter and you can see with your other eye

It's a .mil address and a pdf file.
>>

shit has changed since then. admittedly I didn't bother to read it. See through units have replaced the old bino setups so I see no point in getting them over a more versatile monocular.

What are you talking about? I see everyone using either ANVIS-9/PVS-15 or GPNVG now.
>>
I think I'm still going to hold off on NODs for another five years til they come down to a reasonable price on Gen3 autogated stuff. I sure as shit am not dropping two grand on something just to have it get rekt by some dumbfuck waving a flashlight around.

See you guys then.

Well this is a good thread to ask

Is here any reason to have a pic related if you DONT have NV? Or is it just for larpers
>>
>>33006843
No, that's pretty much it. 99% gearqueers.
>>
>>33006843
Only reason would be to lase something for someone else who does have NV. But that's usually not a need for anyone outside the government.
>>
>>33006881
it does literally dick for thermal right? thermal doesn't also pick up IR does it?
>>
>>33006899
No, thermals are on a different wavelength for the IR spectrum. Thermals are far and sometimes medium IR for extremely nice units. NVG is near IR, which is why you will see some uniforms/fabrics say NIR compliant.
>>
>>33006832
>>Good thermals are $4k-$8k.
>Q14Bs for 1.5-1.8k should be releasing in about three or four months.

Link? I've yet to see any good thermal under $4k new. There's a lot in that price range but the resolution is low or the frequency is super low.
>>
>>33008504
>Link? I've yet to see any good thermal under $4k new

Not that anon but >>32994728 mentioned a scope that's around 3.2k in some places. The zeus 3 is top tier for it's price and the 2 is even cheaper.
>>
>>33006761

What is the cheapest NV/thermal scope you'd buy for hunting hogs out to a max of 100 yards at night?

w/o NV its a really expensive cat/dog toy with the red VIS laser and an IR spectrum that you cant see w/o NV

I have literally never seen any unit that currently uses 21s outside of old SAS pictures. Special Forces, Seals, and even FBI are using GPNVGs. I'm not scouring the web and intimately familiar with either NVG's history but these are some old ass pictures of the 21 in use back in 2007. I thought the GPNVG was newer than that.
>>
>>33009107

OK. Does anyone have specs on them? Even estimated specs?
>>
>>33012489
320x240 at 5FPS.
>>
>>33013720
No.
>>
>>33013922
Then give some specs, bitch, or it's a piece of garbage like I said.
>>
>>33013959
There aren't any released specs yet. But from the video alone it clearly isn't 5FPS.

Did FLIR molest you or something? Why are you so mad?
>>
>>33014031
I don't have a problem with FLIR, but poorfags buy shitty units and then try to shill them to people over LLLTV options.
>>
>>33014119
K. Well everyone in the industry is excited for it, I'll be skeptical as well but I'm hopeful it'll be worth getting.
>>
>>33013720
I hope not. That's lower than the crappy 9fps of the previous flir low cost unit.
>>
>>33016289
Watch the footage from it. Looks at least 30 to me.
