I'm in the market to buy a shotgun right away here and I think I've narrowed it down to either the Remington 870 or the Mossberg 500. I'm in Canada and the price points are within $80 of one another so price isn't an issue. Anyone here have experience with both or one of the two?

Any insight is much appreciated.
>>
>>32982561

I know there are a ton of youtube videos out there on the subject but they all seem to come down to
>"They're both great, it's all personal preference"

Which doesn't really help me out all that much.
>>
>>32982561
current rem express is simply built worse than current mossberg. i own both and it comes down to ergonomics. both are fine. you just pick based on personal preference tang safety vs push button, slide release location
the only thing thats straight up better is the mossberg loading gate since it isnt in the way and easier to load. the mossberg has a wobbly forend that may put you off but that play is there by design.

>Which Scatter gun is Best Scatter Gun?
Vepr12, duh...
>>
>>32982561
And I should have added, I like the controls better on the 870 vs the mossberg.
But if I'd grown up with the mossberg, I'd probably be just as biased the other way.
>>
>>32982646

The rattling forend did seem like a weakness, you're saying it's like that on purpose?
>>
>>32982561
I have shot both and they are so nearly identical that it's not worth the price difference. M500 all the way.
>>
>>32982654

Don't think I can acquire that in Leafland..
>>
>>32982671
the wiggle room makes it more reliable. the slide could be caked in mud and still be pumped.
>>
>>32982678

does the lighter alloy receiver matter much when shooting?
>>
>>32982680
Yeah, too bad too.
but I love my 870, but keep hearing bad things about the qc nowadays
>>
>>32982671
Partially, it's loose which prevents buildup of debris.
They're also cheap, I've noticed modern ones rattle more than my used one from the mid 1980s. It's not a real problem, but it does put a lot of people off.
>>
>>32982684
That makes sense. Didn't think of it like that.
>>
>>32982692

The old guy at cabelas made a comment about QC with remington. Said it's really suffered lately.
>>
>>32982689
Yes, gun kicks more because it weighs less.
>>32982692
Acquire a Chinese copy or a vintage Remington. The Chinks are around $200 (IAC Hawk and H&R Pardner Pump) and older 870s are obtainable in the $300-400 range but slowly going up.
>>
>>32982689
not in any significant manner. heavier means less recoil but a good buttpad would make more of a difference than a pound of weight. relying on weight to reduce recoil is dumb.
aluminum receiver is good enough for durability. any abuse that would wreck it would wreck the 870 too.
>>
>>32982722

Ok cool. In terms of accessories, does either gun have more options?
>>
I too would like a guide in the right direction, I was debating between what shotgun should I get with a budget of 400?

Looking for a solid home def

Also, are those Win SXP defenders good?
>>
>>32982732
870 design lets you extend capacity without replacing half the gun. other than that its about equal if they make a stock for an 870 they probably make it for the 500
>>
>>32982756
i would like to know as well
>>
>>32982756
>>32982767
Get a Norinco 982/Pardner Pump or Mossberg 5XX.
>>
>>32982758

I'm pretty sure The max i'm allowed to have in CA is 4+1 anyway so that shouldn't be big deal.

Thanks for the info, just finally got my license recently and i'm a little autistic when I go into gun shops
>>
what do you intend to use it for??

In Canada, we get access to a lot of shotguns actually...

everything from 9-14" pump guns to turkish magfed semiautos.
>>
>>32982561
I prefer the 870 personally. I owned both a 500 and 870 for a while and I ended up selling the 500 cause the 870 just felt better to me.

I just want a 2 cents on the SXP
>>
>>32982780
max capacity is not so simple...

www.huntinggearguy.com/tips/maximum-shotshell-capacity-canada/

manual action firearms are unlimited, and if a semi is chambered for 3 or 3.5" shells, you can fit in more than the legal limit of 2.75" shells.
>>
>>32982561
proud owner of an 870 express. very happy with the gun

never had a mossberg
>>
>>32982646
I can second this. I also own both. The mossberg rattle is, as others pointed out, a reliability safety net of sorts. For me, it was the location of the safety and slide release that makes me prefer the feel of the mossberg. They both shoot as you'd expect them to. Pick one up and go with what you prefer in hand. They're 300 dollar shotguns.
>>
>>32982608
it's like you can't handle the idea that there might not be a best answer.

almost any would be fine, it's not that hard to make a shotgun

>>32982664
oh look, there's your answer
>>
I'm a huge mossberg shill personally.

I just like the way they feel more. There's nothing wrong with a well-made remington, though. Recent remington models have some QC issues iirc though.
>>
>>32982893

Just trying to avoid buyer's remorse m8.
>>
>>32982561
The 870 has a better safety placement in my opinion. The safety on my super shorty will get kicked back into safe with slugs or larger shells. Might just be that gun or PGO 500's as it doesn't happen with either of my regular 500's. But the 500 has a better slide release location IMO.

The forend looser on the 500 but like some have already pointed out thats a good thing.

No need for a gun smith when you break your ejector on a 500

The 870 has a piece of metal over the loading gate which drives me absolutely crazy.

I own 3 500's for a reason. The 870 isnt bad tho. Shoot both if you can and then decide. they'll both go bang every time.
>>
>>32982561

if you MUST have new, get the Mossy.

if not, get a used 870 that was made before ~1995. It might not be new but the quality will be tops and for $350-$600 depending on model and condition.
>>
>>32982561
What about Supernovas?
>>
I have a IAC Hawk 982t. Works fine.

I assume there are much nicer ones out there.
>>
Chokeless 12gs a shit.
>>
Both are good guns, it's hard to go wrong, although I have my own preferences and there are minor considerations that can help you decide.

870 is steel, 500 is aluminum. The 870 is a bit tougher but is heavier to carry. 500 is less of a pain to carry all day long. Both are rather reliable.

If you get the 500, you NEED to replace the plastic safety button with a steel one. Also, if you can afford it I'd suggest replacing the trigger guard housing on the 500 with a metal one as well.

That housing is held in place with two tiny tabs of plastic in the front. they usually hold just fine, but under very hard or long use, they will occasionally crack and leave the weapon useless until that entire housing is replaced.

If you put a sidesaddle on it, careful not to over tighten it on the 500. If you do, you can compress the receiver and bind it up so it doesn't work anymore. A little tight, it's temporary until you loosen the screws. A little tighter still and you've permanently fucked the receiver.

The 870 is reputed to have some QC problems at the moment. Probably true but probably blown out of proportion. If you get an 870 really put it through it's paces to discover if it has problems before you put it into service to protect yourself.

Or get an old one from before the problems. Most used 870s work just fine. I really like the old police guns. Usually ugly but mechanically fine and a good price because of the appearance.

You can easily extend the magazine on an 870.

The 500 tends to be a bit less expensive.

Both have LOTS of aftermarket accessories available.

I prefer the 870 and have owned several of both and like both. Just be aware of the limitations of whatever you pick so you can work around them.
>>
I own an 870 and wish I had a 500. Being that it was my first gun ever I wouldn't be able to part with it but the controls on th Mossberg are so much better that I wish I had known better when I first bought the 870.
>>
>>32982561
>I narrowed it down to the two most common shotguns on the planet

Well I can tell you did your research. The problems with the Express are not exaggerated. I prefer 870's over 500's but just avoid the express and get a wingmaster or police magnum.
>>
Is an Ithaca 37 or Stevens 350 a good alternative to the 2 standard choices? I'm a lefty and the bottom feed+eject sounds nice. I also sort of like the It Ain't Me factor.
>>
>>32982561

been thinking of getting a mossberg 930 spx, but I'm kind of ignorant and lazy so I was wondering how it stacks vs other sa shotguns with regard to ease of stripping, cleaning and reassembly

I was going to start a thread for this but that would be selfish, so I'll post this here.

I picked up a 18.5" 5+1 Mossy 500 the other day as my first shotgun, and I'm kinda regretting not getting the 7+1 because it's only another inch and a half of length for 2 extra shells. I bought it from the Brownells retail store and from the call I just had with their customer service it sounds like they'll more than likely take it back and let me trade for the 20" one, just paying the difference.

It's for home defense, so I know it being short is nice but I can't square a 1.5" difference in length with being worth 2 shells in my head. Am I being retarded? I realize I'll probably never need more than 2 or 3 shells in a HD scenario (which in and of itself will probably never happen), but it's been bugging me.
>>
>>32985299
why don't you just get a tube extension?
>>
>>32985334
Can't do those on 500s, the mag tube cap is part of the barrel. I could buy a new barrel and mag tube, but at that point I could almost buy a whole new 500.
>>
you really can't go wrong with either, it all comes down to preference and what fells right for you

I own a SXP. I've only shot it twice and only about 100 shots each time. From buckshot to slugs, and to birdshot/target loads I had no problems. It's not different than the other entry level turkshit guns. (Pardus/legacy/Weatherby) I like it, and the inertia pump mechanic doesn't bother me.
The only issue is the aftermarket is non-existent, replacement barrels may not work on the defender model. I haven't received contact back about it yet. And the small Winchester logo on the bottom of the stock fell off but was able to just snap back in.
I like it but I'm going to get more shotguns. This will probably get a choked barrel and be my hunting/skeet gun and I'll get a older police trade in gun for HD.

You can use whatever ammo you want (limited by range rules obv).

Target loads for plinking and breaking clays, I guess? It's cheap and doesn't punish you in terms of recoil.

As a newbie, you should try to shoot as big a variety of shotgun ammo as you can. It'll inform you as to why people consider shotguns the most versatile firearm.

One of my Mossmans is 25 years old, the other is 50 years old. Both have been ridden REAL rough in those times.

I agree 1000% on the plastic safety being shit. But the plastic trigger guard on both guns is still going strong and I'm NOT gentle with them, nor were their previous owners (particularly the 60s gun, which was in rough enough shape the pawnshop guy let me have it for $75).

False bro
Shotguns are tube extended magazines not detachable.
You can stick a plus 10 round extended mag tube and it'll still be legal.
Get yourself a Semi auto shotgun and add an extended tube to it. Win win

I'm in California
> Detachable mags are scary
> Extended tube mags aren't detachable hence they are legal.
>>
>>32984472
Some Mossberg 930 SPX have had problems. Some JM 930's have turned into pump shotguns during competitions.
> Mossberg makes good pump shotguns
> They need to work on QC on their semi autos and rifles.
>>
>>32989592
Correction, when you go hunting you have to have plug to limit Semi Auto shotguns to 1-3 rounds. (Round count varies where you hunt in California)
But again thats only hunting you are limited to 1-3 rounds.

In your own home you can have a 24" in shotgun with +1 to +9 rounds
But let me reiterate this only applies to extended mag tubes, (NOT DETACHABLE MAGS)

>>32982561
Also a /K/anuck, I went for the 500. The sales on them tend to be better if you like barrel combos, and, when I bought it, it came will a full set of chokes and the 870 only came with 1. I've also never met someone who regretted buying a 500, but I definitely have met people who regret buying 870 Expresses. Rust on the new Expresses seems to be a big issue. My friend actually had his rust up in less than a year, in Alberta, only being used at a range.

The only real downside to the Mossberg is that getting magazine extensions is a bit more difficult, but that comes down to what you want it for anyways. If you just want to plink and shoot shit wait for CanadaAmmo to have a sale on grizzly's for $200, that seems to happen every few months.
