Has Remington improved since Freedom Group was usurped by Cerberus? I remember in 2012 when I graduated high school many of my hunting buddies went out and bought 870s as their first gun purchase to replace their dad's Benellis and Ithacas, and their 870's rusted out after three days of dove hunting, and one bought a 770 in .30-06 that couldn't shoot a two inch group at 50 yards. I don't mean to be anecdotal but I honestly want to know if Cerberus cleaned up the problems. Many such cases. Sad!

I have a KSG. It kicks like a horse with everything except low recoil rounds. It's fun for 30 mins or so with regular trap loads unless you get a recoil mediating butt pad. My GF still won't shoot it. If you get one order the choke adapter first thing, and get the adapter for Remington or Mossberg chokes.
It's very fun with Aguila short shells. I wont sell mine.

Have a friend that owns one. Its nice. It does kick pretty hard with any kind of highbrass shells though. Its great for looking like a sperg school shooter at the trap and skeet range.

Put a red dot or reflex sight on it.

My 870 express has been flawless so far. Have run around 300 rounds through it, no problem. I keep the finish lightly lubed with CLP. No rust as of yet.

Get a Beretta 1301 tactical. All the good stuff of a Benelli M4 at half the cost, and if you look hard enough you can find one in your price range.

It's a neat range toy. More moving parts = more propensity to fail. If you just want a range toy get it.

If you want it for any actual use (hunting, sporing clays, etc.) find a shotgun that has interchangeable chokes. Open choked shotguns are incredibly inflexible. I think you would be happier with a more general purpose shotgun for your first one, but that's just me. I think the novelty would wear off fast. A pump action shotgun (read: no give) that small shooting 3" shells is probably going to be a lot more fun to look at than to shoot.
