Why do most shotguns feed from the bottom and eject from the side, when the Ithaca 37 works perfectly well ejecting from the bottom? It's got one less mud hole and I can't see any disadvantages to it.
>>
>>32963466
They designed it that way just to piss you off.
>>
>>32963466
good for lefties.
>>
It's degenerate to go in and out if the same port. God fearing Americans chose side ejection after WWII once we saw how dirty the European shotguns were.

The disadvantage is that if it does jam, it's REALLY a bitch to clear the jam.
>>
>>32963466
I think it's safe to assume it's more complex and/or more difficult to un-jam
>>
I've had a 870 jam and that was a mother to fix with the load elevator. The last shell in the magazine didnt seat and popped half way back out and forced the gate shut with the full compressed force of the mag spring. The gate locked the bolt in place too. I can't remember what I did but it involved swearing.
>>
>>32963466
>works perfectly well
>I can't see any disadvantages to it

The disadvantage is that when it jams it's way harder to clear. It's also a little more prone to jamming.
>>
>>32963466
This is just my intuition here, but if you eject and feed from the same time, you have to clear the spent shell completely before you begin loading the next shell in which makes the gun more mechanically complex. In the Ithaca the feed lever moves above the bolt when the round is in battery, and then pushes the spent shell out before allowing the next round to be ejected from the magazine tube and onto the feed lever.

If you contrast this to the conventional 870/500 in which the extractor kicks the shell out as the new round is let out onto the feed lever, this means that the feed lever doesn't need to go above the bolt which lets you make it so that it doesn't have a massive gap in the middle, in addition to this it lets you either make the bolt longer, or have a shorter stroke, since it only has to go far enough back to just barely let the spent shell out.

Thanks for the meme-free answer. Why don't they just put a dust cover over the ejection port of shotguns so it's not such a worry? t. nogunz

>>32964411
>so it doesn't have a massive gap in the middle
What gap are you talking about?
>>
>>32964508
look at part 13 in this diagram, this is the feed lever/ramp ,(the thing that lifts shells from the magazine tube into the the chamber), it's also fairly visible here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mbxqmw_Lgig

When the shell comes out of the magazine tube it's only supported on the very sides, this means that the shell is somewhat more likely to get pinched/warp which could cause the gun to jam.
>>
>>32964508
>so it's not such a worry?

It's not really a worry without a dust shield. Shotguns, or 12 gauge anyway, have large openings in the receiver so anything that gets in gets out just as easy. In addition the default position with the bolt closed means nothings going to get into anything important.

Compare that to something like pic related, the shell only contacts the feed ramp in one location which means that there's no possibility of it getting stuck between the levers/ect, it's just generally a more reliable design.

Dirt isn't usually much of an issue with pump shotguns, with an auto-loader, if the action is a bit sticky it could mean that you get a failure to feed/extract, but with a pump, you just work the action a little harder.

Thanks again anons. Bit of a shame, the 37 looks so damn sexy without the port.
>>
>>32963538
Am left handed, shoot and load 870 just fine. lefties that bitch about shells ejecting across their vision are just whiny faggots
>>
>>32963466
Damn, I can't think of any other firearm that feeds from the bottom and ejects from the side

Oh wait, I just remembered most modern pistols and rifles

>>32965374
But those use magazines
>>
>>32964733
Oh don't get us wrong they are sexy and if you get a chance to own one take it.
But they're not the end all of pump action shotgun technology.

while we're on the subject can someone explain this to me?
>>
>>32963466
Speaking of shotguns is there a tube feed full auto shootgun that takes at least 10 round?

Tube in a why that goes under the barrel, parallel to it.

It makes magazine fed conversions pretty hard to do.

Ejection is a non-issue for lefties unless it's a bullpup.

Not the anon you replied to, but is correct. It's not an argument because you made some shit up and got called out. You then refused to defend yourself or provide evidence to back your claim.

So there is no argument to be had and we all accept that you are indeed full of shit

Well it works just fine in most circumstances and for most uses. Don't accidentally pump a live round out the bottom though, blackened my toe nail by magically flying out in exactly the right way.

I have a mid 70's model 37 that has Ithaca NY stamped in it. I hold the trigger down and slam fire it into the air screaming "I can't believe you were made in NY!!!!!"
>>
>>32964733
I love the 37 and it's provenance and would recommend one to anyone interested in a pump 12. It just has different problems than an 870/500, not fewer.
