It's semi auto gas operated 5.56.

>are these things actually interesting to shoot
No

SWAT version specifically is the most boring of them all. If you want a dope ass Swiss 550, this isn't it. Just get a nice AR 15.
>>
>>32963817
They're as interesting to shoot as any other gun. It recoils milder than my ar-15, but it shoots like any intermediate caliber rifle. If you like it, buy it.

I have an 556XI that I love. Fired close to 8000 rounds through it at this point. While I admit, that isn't a very high round count, it is high enough for any issues to start showing up. So far, none. I've shot everything from garbage steel case TulAmmo to Wolf to milsurp out of it with zero reliability issues. Gen 2 and 3 PMAGs works, USGI mags, and Lancers have all worked as well. Only magazine related issue I have had is with my friends 100 round Betamag. If I fired slowly it would feed reliably but if I started firing as fast as I could the round wouldn't feed. The bolt would just slide over the top of the round. The betamag did work in my friend's AR so I would assume the tension on the spring would need to be adjusted.

Have a gas piston means it is front heavy. The selector is amib as is the magazine release. The bolt release isn't but can always just use the charging handle, which is, reversible.

It ejects the rounds violently, about the 2-3 o'clock position, and out to about 20-25 feet. If you want to save your brass, this isn't the rifle for that. Also, because the way the rounds are ejected the mouth of each case gets dented. More of a pain and than a real issue for hand loaders. The deflector will slowly become a nice brass color from the rounds.

After market parts are largely non existent compared to the AR. You'll have people ask you what kind of AR it is. You'll have people ask you why you didn't just buy an AR.

I paid $1100 for mine over three years ago and it has been my go to rifle for range trips. I'd recommend one, but I am clearly biased.

Pic very related.

the main difference is instead of having a long spring behind the bolt carrier pushing it back in position, it's wrapped around the piston rod and pulls the carrier back in position.

Both are long stroke systems, which provide lighter felt recoil than short stroke systems.

If I really wanted a SIG 556 and couldn't get one, but I talked shit about it anyways, that would be sour grapes.

However, I'm not pissed that I can't get a 556. I can get a 556 tomorrow. I'm pissed I can't get the superior SG 550 and I'm force fed plastic garbage that looks similar to it. I'm talking shit about the rotten grapes that fell on the floor a week ago that no one wants, I have nothing bad to say about the good ones that are just out of reach.

>>
>>32963458
I got one too, picked it up last year at my local fun store for $850.00 as an impulse buy
>was used
>has AR15 stock attachment
>magpul CTR stock
>railed forend w/ sig rail covers
>BSA optic
>some kind of AM flash suppressor (possibly AAC?) with integral suppressor threads
>one sig mag that will also work on an AR18

told the fun store guy that I heard bad things about supplied mag, so they throw in a Pmag w/ window and ranger plate for free

I like it overall, the action is pretty smooth, I like the trigger... totally different then a stock AR, ergos are good too

I guess it's on the heavy side, and the front end would be considered fat due to the rails and the rubber guards. Threw a cheapo promag swiss style VG on which makes it more comfortable.

I'm not nutnfacy so the above doesn't bug me. and the weight does help with the felt recoil, as it is pretty much non existent

it's a great suppressor host. I use it for squirrels more than practicing the SIG manual of arms. I shoot it more than my 10/22s. Mostly because it rustles the jimmies of the fudds here when I hunt with it.
>>
>>32975712
Good to know. So no reliability issues? I was worried that it might use pot metal parts prone to failure like a lot of cheap .22s seem to do.

oh shit my guy - Is that a P556 upper that you dropped a 553 style handguard onto? I did that with my P556 with the MFI diopter, flip down sights, and handguard, but that handguard is super flimsy. I'm thinking of just going and getting some authentic swiss 550 handguards and cutting them down, but I'm not sure what other options there are.

Is right, they do cost an arm and a leg.

t. US Sig 550 owner. Its worth it though, but I wish you could import them so I wouldn't feel bad about shooting mine cause I'd love to have it be my main gun instead of an AR.

>>32979357
They're not serialized, available on gb. They run about $800-1300, add 300 for the stock. Just search "sig 550" "sig 551" "sig 553" on gb and something should eventually come up. There's a few online shops that sell them too, like cogunsales. Theres a few others but I can't remember the names off the top of my head.

Sig mags are usually 80-100 bucks per, but some guy on gb has em for 40 right now. Im mad I missed that deal when I bought my mags so if youre interested, I'd get hopping.

My dad got one of these. It was just the regular Sig .556 though without the quad rail. I honestly found it to have a lot of loose fitting parts. It has like kind of a rattle when you shake it side to side.

I shot it with iron sights at a small steel plate about 50 yards away and it seemed to be a pretty good shooter out of the box. I liked the folding stock and its overall weight. I guess you can change the side of the bolt handle? is that true? What ever. Pretty cool gun. Just loose as a motherfucker.

Im not going to pay what he did for one, not while i have an AR.

Just my ramblings.

>A bill to abolish the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, transfer its functions relating to the Federal firearms, explosives, and arson laws, violent crime, and domestic terrorism to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and transfer its functions relating to the Federal alcohol and tobacco smuggling laws to the Drug Enforcement Administration, and for other purposes. Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled.
They want gun owners to keep their lights on by voting against this. Which... might actually be in our best interests. The FBI could be much worse.

I could, but that shits expensive, I've done it for my 510 and Sht Lee NoIMkI***, and getting the plastic done is a no-go from my understanding. If you break the handguards, I've never ever seen a green pair for sale in country, and I've been looking for a green 553 handguard for years.

The main thing is just wear and tear. I had a friend who dropped my brand fucking spanking new old stock 1969 manufacture AR (nds lower) off the bench and scratched up the annodizing on the carry handle. Its not bad so I don't care, but if that happened to the 550 I'd be absolutely livid, or other wear/plastic wearing shiny/scratching finish/putting wear on the barrel.. The sigs also like to kick brass against the side of their receiver which wrecks the finish right behind the ejection port.

Compared to my "daily driver" AR which has all the scratches and nicks consistent with someone shooting this thing at a range, inna woods, at gravel pits,, putting it on gravel when sitting down after a hike, throwing it in the trunk, etc etc etc. It's not beat to utter shit, but I don't want to treat a Rolls Royce like a '96 Accord.

The sig 550 is the most expensive gun I own by far, and I got it in its original factory grease, with maybe 10 rounds through it, and I've only put another 20 through it, and there sure as hell aren't any more of them in the US, so I'm trying to keep good care of it.

Oh that's not all of it. I've got a dozen built lowers, a dozen pistols, some more levergats/precision gats, and a bunch of NFA. I moved from a big house into a little house and am running out of places for guns.

Sounds like I need more guns.

Figure I've got $1500-$2000 per rifle, plus the NFA stuff, plus maybe $900 per pistol, I'd guess $250k. I've been collecting for 15 years or so.

It's probably closer to 17 years but the $250k is just a back of the napkin estimate. I don't really want to know what I've spent. That also doesn't include mags or ammo. As you could have guessed, I have many of those too.

>My wife and I are both in STEM, but that still seems like an incredible amount of money on firearms. I guess my priorities are just elsewhere.

It is, and it's ALL common sense but you'd probably be shocked at how many educated people don't get it, and continue to not get it even after it's pointed out to them. Back in November I had a financial analyst company that had a vulnerability with a CVSS score of 9.8 exposed to the internet. That's like a "stop work and fix it now" situation but they have no plans to do anything about it AND have no mitigation in place.

In general try to limit how much data doctors, lawyers, and the financial industry keeps on you, if they keep their records online. I've not seen one system that wasn't terrible and the people in all three industries don't seem to understand they hold some liability for the customer data they hold.

Change fields. I went to college for archaeology and geology with a minor in history. I got screwed by my school because I was going at night and didn't finish in 4 years. They told me half my credits wouldn't count towards their new graduation requirements. I told them to get bent and haven't been back.

Is it because the mountain Jews are hoarding them or because we have an import ban on the 550s? I though a ban was placed on them in the 1990s because they were tactical bad guy guns from movies. Same thing with Finnish Valmets.

Less precision, reliability and quality than the original one. The 550/1/2/3 is a battle rifle build for war.

The 556 and it's variants are build for range.

Like I said. Looks and functions fairly similarly. Just because it's made for the range doesn't make it a good gun. That's all 99.9% of gun owners will use it for anyway.

They usually are, I just was camping GB for a while for mine, and by chance there were two others that had accessories, one had the case and scope, so they were getting all the attention. Mine only came with one bitch 5 round mag, so I got super lucky. They seem usually run 10-12k, but there was one with a scope that was sitting on gb for a long time, I actually wish I got that since I want one of those scopes and it would have been a better deal, but its before I had the cash.

>>32991053
They're a giant pile of shit if you own a 550 senpai. Actually, even the 553s are a step down, even though theyre still really top notch quality, but the 550 is ridiculous. Some guy on opchan did a study on some bolt measurements of 550s across the years, and the tolerance measurement was some ungodly small value, like half a human hair or something. Thread might still be up.

Though really, they're not shit. The issues I have with them is they are way too tacticool, and they really deviated far from the original on the lower receivers, especially to make them compatible with AR stocks, and ar mags (which at least has its pros). There's a lot of different tacticool as shit models that I feel are designed to appear to cod kiddies, like the Beretta ARX and other shit like that are, but the original "Classic" models when they first came out weren''t too bad, they just were modelled as a 16" Sig 551, and I have a very strong preference for the 20" and the aesthetic of the longer handguards and the bipod, so they don't really do it for me.

>>32993776
C'est la vie. /k/ fashion is to be nogunz but still argue from "im a tactical operator, i know what im talking about" expertise.

>>32998978
Til. They are threaded differently to the receiver though.
>>
>>32998978
The 556r, swat, xi versions too ?

But that don't change the fact that the 556 has less precision. You have certainly never shoot a original 550 to say that.

The 556 is a correct/normal precision tier and the 550 is top precision tier.

Nobody is saying that the 556 or the 551A1 (american version of the 551) is crap. They are good guns but you cannot compare them to the swiss SG550. It's a total different category and not even made by the same company.
It's saying that a VW Golf GTi is the same thing than a Rolls Royce.
