So, I finally bought a rifle. Remington 700 SPS. "Unrivaled out the box accuracy" my ass. I'm barely getting 2 inch groups at 100 yards. Sure, it's plenty accurate for a hunting rifle, but the fit and finish is crap. So I bought the rifle because it was the only rifle with a dark barrel and synthetic stock that was left handed and under $1000
So, enter Tikka. Did some research found out about their T3x line, and it has a lefty rifle with a synthetic stock. I'll probably just cerakote the barrel a dark grey. So are the Tikkas any good? Any recommendations/competition to the tikka?
Also, feel free to make fun of Remshit.

What kind of ammo did you use?

I was thinking of getting a 700 as well, now I don't know.
>>
>>32959814
I was using Hornady American Whitetail (7mm Rem Mag, 139gr.) it didn't like PPU 140s any better
>>
>>32959788
Rem700s aren't as accurate as Savage or Tikka out of the box.
>>
>>32959882

This. Savage and Tikka are the two best options on the market right now for a basic fudd bolt rifle.
>>
>>32959788
Are you doing your part anon? Try different ammo. Try premium ammo if you haven't. How's your rest? How's your breathing and flinching? Have you allowed some time between shots? How's the quality of your scope rings and base? Your barrel may still need more rounds to break in and settle down.

All shit you would have to deal with any production rifle man. Tikkas make good guns but I have seen people get worse than that with them.
>>
>>32959902
All of that was my original thinking. I had several people come in and shoot it. Best we got was 2 MOA with Hornady Superformance. We tried Noslers and a few other brands. Shot about 300 rounds out of it and the barrel hasn't improved. I personally blame it on the stock. I can (somewhat) predictably move where the round will go by squeezing a little harder on one side of the stock. The barrel easily moves around, too.
>>
>>32959882
>>32959894
Thanks, guys. Any experience with the Savage?
>>
>>32959958

Remington has been garbage for 10 years. Take it back.
>>
>>32959982
Savage 10 is the best bang for your buck right now, save perhaps Howa 1500s.
Both are excellent options and have a lot of aftermarket parts.

Also, the most accurate factory ammo I've ever shot was Prime. Might want to try that.
>>
>>32959958
>squishy stock
Yeah, that's probably the issue. I was eyeballing precision bolt rifles for a while and found that Remington gets BTFO by Savage and Tikka in every way except maybe price. Should have got a Savage 10 FCP-SR.
>>
>>32959982

I bought a .30-06 111/11 package with a nikon glass and the accutrigger over the summer for just under $500. Factory zeroed dead on at 50 yards, I rezeroed to 150 and took 3 deer and my buddy took an elk with it no problem.

Great gun.
>>
>>32959982
Dumb accurate out of the box. I got a Savage 12FV and it shoots .5" groups at 150 yards from a bipod (no sandbags).

I have two relatives who own $6k Italian shotguns and expensive Blaser rifles and they both bought Savages after shooting mine. Both shoot just as well as mine.

Savage actions and the accutrigger are fantastic but the synthetic stocks are cheap as hell and kind of squishy. The stock mine came with had only plastic bedding but it still shot around 1 MOA. I replaced the stock and now I'm well under half-MOA.

I'd also take a look at Howa. You can buy barreled actions and find a nice aftermarket stock. I've shot some Howa .22-250s and was exploding rats at 300+ yards with not much effort.
The laminate stocks on my relative's guns are much nicer.
>>
Anyone fuck with Ruger American? I hear they're shooting Moa or sub MOA out of the box with decent glass

Someone who's been through this before chiming in.

I was thinking about a Tikka but I couldn't find one I liked at the time. I wanted a Varmint, but they didn't have any in a caliber I wanted. Tacticals were too expensive and I noticed they had zero aftermarket.

I fucking hate Savage. I took /k/'s advice and got a 10FCP-SR. Stock was warped badly to the point of ruining the barrel float. There were burrs in the raceway of the bolt causing it to stick and hand instead of cycling, and I guess the throat was a bit too short or the headspace was as tight as it could be, because about one or two rounds of every box of GMM would not chamber. at all. Worst part is it's the only load it would shoot MOA or under consistently.

Dumped it at a loss and got a 700p. Couldn't be happier. I'd known about Remington's reputation, but I also knew that most people got the shitty hogue stock versions with the XTAC trigger or whatever it was called. So I manned up and got a better one. The police version has an HS-precision stock and a 40x trigger as well as a 5r barrel. It's been fantastic.

They are hit or miss. I have shot two ordered at same time. One shot great one can't do any better than 1.5" if you look at them in person their a beater gun.

Savage 10 fpc w/ m80 ball ammo.

My 1976 Remington 700 is ungodly accurate. Not sure what you're doing wrong.
Then again I have a 7oz trigger custom 28" free floated bull barrel, target crown, and a Nikon scope.
>>
The Tikka is so much better than the Remington it isn't funny. Savages are decent too.
>>
>>32959982
Savages are good to go.

Not sure where you are located but if you have a Cabelas nearby then they have a killer deal on the Model 12. Should be MOA or better out of the box.

You're welcome:

Heavy-barrel 700s seem to not have been as tarnished.

My 700P LTR is a dream.
>>
>>32961125
the SPS and a lot of 550-600$ offerings are heavy barrel models. They still have a reputation for mediocrity. I'm confident it's those stocks and triggers. The police models having better barrels may also help.

I love my savage Model 110

>are the Tikkas any good

Made on the same lines as fucking SAKO, so yes... they are good.
>>
OP is learning that "accurate out of the box" doesn't mean "puts you through sniper school"
>>
>>32962804
r700s are well known to be it or miss for years, regardless of OPs lack of skills
>>
>>32962838
Their budget rifles suck.
>>
Savage 10 FCP-SR
Savage 10T-SR
Tikka CTR
Tikka T3x
Howa 1500 + chassis/stock

Any of those in 6.5CM in a 24" barrel. Don't do the 20" barrel crap.
>>
>>32962804
OP also realizes that he will never be as accurate as most custom rifles, but he expects a rifle to poke a hole in roughly the same spot without human error. If you read, I said it was in a Lead Sled, which holds the rifle in place. All you do is squeeze the shiny lever. With weights at the bottom, the rifle doesn't move. OP also competed in many shooting competitions, so he knows his limitations and the limitations of a rifle.

Typing in the third person is kinda weird

Fuck you I love my 20" model 10 FCP-SR

You getting the Choate stock for yours? Do you have the magazine retention problems?
>>
>>32965382
Probably going to leave the stock as-is I kind of like it.

I don't have mag retention problems but the mags don't feed reliably. Will probably pick up some aftermarket mags in the near future.
>>
>>32965450
Have you looked into the Choate tactical stocks? Definitely an improvement to consider.

My magazines don't like to stay put at all, kinda pisses me off

Yes Tikka T3 is good to go. This is a 3 shot group at 100 yards with 168gr federal gold medal match out of my stainless ultralight. Whole rifle with a 50mm 16x scope weighs less than 8lbs.

Best thing about the Tikka's besides their silky smooth bolt is the adjustable trigger. I've got mine set to just a hair over 2lbs and it breaks incredibly nice. I'm a trigger snob and I cannot complain.
