traditional pocket knives edition.

What does /k/ carry?

My regular edc is a spyderco techno (because reasons), with a gec #18 coyote as backup.
Thought about getting a mudbug when they came up at the end of january, but ended up ordering a beer scout (pic related).

Currently carrying a Lionsteel TRE, which is about as non-traditional as it gets.

I've been thinking about trying a traditional but not sure what to get. I know I'll hate a Case thanks to shit F&F and steel, GECs are great but getting them is apparently a pain in the ass, and not sure who else to look at.

>>32959912
what grit do you finish your EDC knives with?
>>
>>32960211
The spyderco gets a diamond fine stone, green, the sak gets finished with an Arkansas black surgical stone and the douk douk gets a fairly rough edge, but it's easily the sharpest of the bunch. Finished with a well worn combination stone.

No idea what the actual grit ratings are, but the surgical Arkansas will leave a mirror finish, the fine diamond leaves a hazy mirror, and the combo laves a nice finely scratched and very aggressive edge:

>>32960211
Just my two cents, really you don't need over 600 grit to have a functioning edge, and some argue that a rougher 600 grit edge is better at cutting... I highly disagree with that.

I go up to 1,000 grit diamond, then 1600 grit ceramic, and finish on 3.5 micron strops. Results are pic related... granted that is VG-10 which polishes up very well.
>>
>>32960346
It's push cut versus slicing. A lot of the knives I see posted are sharpened for push cutting. Drake has shown that a slicing blade is easy to make and it's desirable for specific task.
>>
>>32960269
>>32960346
right now, i put my edges either on 600, 1000, or somewhere on a 2k/5k waterstone that im finally learning. was debating if i wanted a spyderco fine or medium ceramic stone, they look pretty nifty.
on a somewhat related note, whats the best tool to freehand sharpen serrations? particularly those on a leatherman tool. I dont like being afraid to use it, because at this stage i know i cant sharpen it

For serrations I use the Spyderco Sharpmaker. I still keep it with my Wicked Edge rig just for serrations a bread knives. I also have some small metal files and the Spyderco ceramic file set (pic related) for if the Sharpmaker triangles are too big, but I have not really run into that issue.
>>
>>32961048
Any round sharpening stone looks like a thin honing steel, edges of sharpening stone (not recommended), worksharp field sharpener has a serration and fishing hook sharpener.
>>
>>32960346
This. The cleaner the very edge, the cleaner it will cut. Any roughness or irregularities even down to the smallest degree, affect how cleanly the blade cuts.

Also, something NAMEFAG mentions, is the edge angle to sharpen at. It's tempting to go as shallow as possible, for the thinnest, sharpest edge right? I was guily of that for years. Of course it's appropriate for some blades, but I kept wondering why the edge didn't last long.

>>32961631
Well sounds like you are used to really crappy coatings. Look at the tip of the ZT 0770cf M4 in pic related, it's DLC coating is harder than the actual blade. What looks like a scratch, is actually the soft metal of a bottle cap that rubbed off on the blade when I was using it as a bottle opener. You can tell by the clip that this knife has been carried a lot, and I have used it a lot, but it's hard too tell.

Just because a knife does not look too used, does not mean it hasn't been. Higher end knives don't show much ware, especially if the user takes care of it.

Ayyy. Thanks. Does have some flaws though. I really do not like the pocket clip that the guy who made the custom scales used, I much prefer the stock wire clip. So I carry it clipless in my jeans change pocket. Unfortunately it means I don't carry it as often as I wan't to, since I much prefer pocket clips.

>>

>>

Yeah I still have the original scales and hardware in it's box... I keep all my boxes in case I ever sell or trade... so I have the wire clip... It would just be milling the groves and drilling the hole that the screw goes through into the liner.

I don't have the stuff for it, but my wood working cousins may... I'll have to ask them if they think they can do it.

Hey the Police is a great model, and a classic. I've never gotten the chance to handle one. A little large for most people, but I'm okay carrying knives of that size.

I could not pic between getting a Police or a Military... and then a YouTuber was selling his Ti Mili a couple years back, so that was that. (pic related)

But I'm just no realizing how similar the Al Mar eagle HD is to the Police... if you were to replace the opening hole with a stud and simplify the handle of the Spyderco, they would be almost identical in profile. (pic related)

Al Mar is a really niche hipster brand... They are really well made, but honestly overpriced unless they are what you are looking for.

I am a giant though.. I'm 6'2" and 255... actually lost 30lbs in the past 5 months, used to be a complete whale, now only a half whale.

For me 9"+ knives are still pretty big, just because I notice things over 8" seem to make sheeple concerned. My average carry tends to be around 8.5".
>insert distasteful dick joke.

When I'm out in the woods though, I'll carry anything, and most the time I have a folder and a fixed blade on me. It's also my time to carry things I normally legally can't like Autos and this monstrosity (pic related)

>>
>>32962907
lol I may just change my default name to "half whale" now.

I'm in the prison state Nj... The laws here are pretty tight, but not as much as people think. The legal open limit is 10". And I've never had a problem. Of course though this mean pretty much no carrying a gun...

And YES there are knife hipsters. In fact I would argue a lot of mid-upper production/custom knife fans are very hipster like... Myself included.

Now can you at lest own an OTF on your property? In Nj we can at lest own them, granted I'm not sure if I committed an offense by having mine shipped in state.

I know Microtech made something like the UTX-70 which was specifically to get around some legality in California by being shorter than 2.1 inches or something... But idk if the laws have been changed or if that was just to legally own it or to legally carry it.

CRKT is really low tier. Their quality control is unreliable and the materials they use are unbelievably shitty. Some of their designs are great but the materials just break it. Warranty isn't even good anyway.

Since you're new I would recommend staying far away from CRKT, Kershaw, Gerber, Outdoor Edge, SOG, and Buck. If you're looking for good quality at fair prices Spyderco is definitely your best bet, but if you need something with a better warranty and are willing to sacrifice quality then go Benchmade. Cold Steel has some good designs like the Code series but best stay away from their lower budget and swords.
>>
>>32965977

Pretty much this.
Depends on how much you want to spend, but if you can get to around $70, delica 4 and izula 2 are, in my opinion, the best combination of value and performance you can get. One of those will last you a lifetime. Or you could get a gec farm and field bullnose (or case sodbuster) if you want to go traditional.

Buck 110 folding hunter is a classic with some sentimental value, though for actual performance i'd go with gec.

I would strongly disagree. Mostly with Kershaw and Buck, I've had very good knives from them, just know what you are looking for.

From Buck, get a fixed blade. Yes they use 420ch, but they are amazing at heat treat. I have plenty of $100+ fixed blades but I still often carry my Buck/Tops Nighthawk.

Kershaw makes great knives, even there really cheap stuff is better than most things at the same price range. And all American made stuff really is top notch and long lasting, like the Skyline and Leek. They are made in the same factories of ZT.

Yes I love Spyderco, but they are far from the only quality maker you can get a dependable knife from. Just look for a few reviews.

And the second problem is once again more of the handle, now, the steel obviously isn't the best, but using it occasionally in construction, it would still be workable at the end of the day.

This chipped after I started using it in work, so maybe I hit it with a board or something, but it also doesn't ruin the knife

It's complicated;

I'm actually a full time student going for a Mechanical Engineering degree, from time to time I take a semester off to build up funds working for a landscaping company, mostly driving trucks/tractors and maintenance.

However In the summers I work in Maine as a kind of forester/logger/handyman of sorts under the table for family and family friends.

In my spare time though I sharpen knives, this acts as an income to sustain my blade hobby, and buy me food when I'm am a poor fag.

Hmmm would have to think about it... Yes they are out there, but maybe not Kydex for 60-80, but molded plastic that is functionally the same.

What is the use case? Are you looking for something more "tactical" or more utility? And how big? There are a lot of Cold Steels in that price range. The OSI and OSS would be good "tactical" options but are really big and not good for utility. The SRK VG-1 is great for utility and just about $90. (pic related)

Unfortunately after 2 deployments to Iraq the sand ground out the bearing pivot system they use in the knives and gummed it up.

I am currently looking for a replacement for it, but like the smoothness and 1 handed ease of the griptilian.

Not sure what to buy to replace it with.
>>
>>32972537
you might be able to send it in to benchmade to have it refurbished. worth looking into i believe
>>
>>32972537
One of the M390 Doug Ritter Griptilians because they've been discontinued.

Normal Griptilians have nearly doubled in price from what they were a few years ago with zero changes made to them. At least an improved steel/grind version is easier to rationalize the price.

I recently picked up the Bear Grylls "ultimate knife" for $20 second hand it's in good shape just needs a little sharpening. I know branded knives generally aren't the best but for $20 was it a reasonable deal?

Better than paying $21. Not as good as paying $19. I mean, it's a $20 fixed blade Gerber. It's damn good bang for the buck.

Well depends on the generation, if it is an older one, sorry to say it, but it's a literal unreliable crap. But if it is a newer one, then yeah $20 is great.

The newer ones aren't BAD knives, they are just not worth $65.

Does yours look like this one? If so it's not bad.

Anyone still lurking? I have a strop question, will using petroleum honing oil to try and remove compound on my strop ruin the leather?

I just ad more if needed. Also putting some high proof rubbing alcohol in a fine spray bottle and lightly spraying your strops before use will help the compound run. I do this with my Wicked Edge strops.

No expirence with them. I'm a little weary of them using 420 steel, the only positive experience I've had with it is from Buck, so hopefully they have a good heat treat.

As for a Kabar USMC verses a OKC USMC (like the SP-1), really it's opinion. I would expect the SP-1 to be more durable, then again the SP line is known for coming with overly thick edges. But if you just want one for the sake of having a USMC, I really don't see how you could not go with the classic leather Kabar USMC. But if you intend it for a lot of use, I would not pic either.

depends on the price. Having those in BD1 is great value, and spydie designs are really solid.

Around $50 it's really hard to find a better deal. If you're into traditionals, I guess F&F Bullnose would be worth considering.
Kershaw Link is also very well put together for a similar price, though i'd say the raven2 is better, and the s35vn version of the link is 80 bucks.

Grit should be chosen based on how much slicing vs pushcutting you do and how much cutting of which type you do between touch-ups or full sharpenings.

The more slicing you do and the longer you go between touch ups or full sharpening the coarser you should run your edges, and vice versa.
>>
>>32960718

Most of my own EDC knives do more push cutting type work than slicing type work so I run fairly fine apex finishes on my EDC knives, but as you say, if I knew I was going to spend a few hours slicing carboard boxes (or carpet or rope) I'd use a ~320 grit apex finish.

It would be better suited for that type of work and would be very fast to touch up with a pocket sized DMT C

3d printed this neat frame-lock utility knife (you can flick it open with your thumb like most frame locks).

What kind of steel do utility knife blades have? They seem reasonable sharp out the packet and if it's a decent carbon steel I might try designing a straight-razor holder for it and sharpen it like a razor and shave with it. Just for fun but if the steel isn't good enough there's no point even trying to design such a thing

Around 2013, Benchmade issued a strict MAP policy (manufacturer's advertised price or something close to that). Basically, a retailer can't advertise below a certain price that's set by Benchmade. Their number is something ridiculous like 15%, meaning the lowest a price can be is 15% off MSRP.

In theory, it's meant to help retail stores, specifically mom & pop shops, keep up with internet sellers. In practice, Benchmade raised prices, made themselves more viable for big box stores (like REI who they have a deal with), and then tried to spin it as helping the small knife stores.
>>
>>32989861
Spyderco did this last year as well, but not a strictly, at lest it seems.
>>
>>32989986
Spyderco set their MAP to 40%, meaning most models are only like $10 more. The Dellica/Endura + Mini-Grip/Griptilian were all around $50-60 a few years ago.

Now that Delica/Endura are $60-70 and Mini-Grip/Grip are $90-100, it's easier to see who the greedier jews are.

My dad gave me my first knife (Victorinox sheeps foot) when I was 7-8ish. And I bought two Swiss Army knives (Both Rangers, one lost, one stolen) before I was 14. When I was 14 I bought my first modern ("tactical", single blade locking) knife, a Smith&Wesson SWAT (since fell apart)... But I really started to get into it around 14-15 and bought a Kershaw Skyline. From there I've been buying more and more as I got older, and paid for it with money I made from sharpening. I'm slowing down now though because I'm buying less, more expensive, knives and I'm a (almost) 21 year old college fag.

tl;dr of it: 14 years, but really 7ish years.

Yeah it is a cool knife. I like mine, but it could be a bit more ergonomic, if the spine of the handle was not perfectly straight and instead had a slight curve and profile tapered a little. At lest for my hands (large glove size). But everything else is really well machined with little to no transition gaps or bumps. And the sheath is perfectly functional, the canvas is thick, and it had felt in the plastic insert to prevent rattle, which is also nice.

I surprisingly do not have any stock photo of it, so just for you, a Valentines Day special pic related.

>>
>>32992382
Thats a hard one for sure. You would be able to do the first 3/4 of the blade for sure, but that last curve, I would say not for that part.

As for serrations, you sharpen those the same regardless.

If I had to sharpen one, serrated or not, I would use my Spyderco Sharpmaker.
>>
>>32992591
i dont do any serations, and dont have a curved stone, i could probably use the corner of my lansky to get it done,
>>
>>32992804
What kind of stones on your lansky, diamond, maybe ceramic, I assume?

If so the edge of the Diamond will leave a very noticeable and maybe inconsistent scratch patern. And if you have ceramic I highly advise not to, you may chip the stone, and it would leave an even worse scratch pattern.

You maybe best keeping the stones flat and sharpen normal for the first 3/4ths and just be very light and make sure to rotate the stones with the curve at the last curve.
>>
>>32993192

>>
>>32959638
Best collection I have ever seen. That Gransfors Bruks hatchet is probably the thing I would want most. Really impressive if this is your collection
>>
>>32993221
Well I can't really think of any true fixed angle system that can do it, the Wicked Edge would be no better, there is a curved stone, but WE stones are very expensive ($60+) and idk if it's even curved enough for this case. And the Edge Pro Apex is worse at curves than the WE.

The only onr I can think of is the Spyderco Sharpmaker and it's not really a true "set angle"... I do highly recommend it though, considering I still use it for cases like this and serrations even though I have a WE.

As for me doing it, at my rates it's not really worth mailing knives unless you have a bunch. And for the cost it's better to invest in new set up. That's why most of my customers are local.

Sorry long response, because this is a very interesting question.

Most of my $100+ (some $70 ones even) knives are more that good enough to last a life time of hard (but proper) use. After $100 mostly knives don't actually be better performance or durability wise. It's more about attention to detail and aesthetics, and improvements that don't make a real world difference.

I have my eye on a few customs, I'm a big fan of Will Moon and Gavko for example... And I could go higher in the Production chain as well, I've always wanted a Rockstead (pic related, $1,500), and Midtechs like Hinderer and Todd Begg...

And I will get to them eventually... But for now I want to have a diverse collection, I take more joy in getting a $200 knife every few months rather than buying one every 5-8 months and possibly having to wait a year to get it, or paying much more than it's worth to get it used. I suck at waiting, the 3 month wait for my longsword has been horrible. And right now I'm not getting anything new, I used all my budget on my longsword and am a college student.

But really most importantly... Once you get into those knives, there are not many people to talk to about them. Out side of bladeshows, there are only a few forums where people actually own these kinds of customs, and I've been on them before, there are a lot of stuck up people in the higher knife community compared with the low/mid community.
>>
might as well ask you guys here
I'm going to be doing a year abroad in China and then afterwards I'm planning to go visit Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan. I want a multitool to take with me. I don't need a huge amount of functions. A knife, screwdriver, scissors, and bottle opener would be enough.

I'm not sure what the knife laws are like in the countries I want to visit, but at a quick guess I would think that a locking blade is a huge no-no
>>
how do you guys who have more than one EDC knife decide what to EDC?

do you start at one end of your draw then loop back to the start when you finish it?
do you assign each one a number and then use a random number generator to pick a knife?

Knife laws are the first thing you want to figure out. I know Japan has extremely harsh laws, in fact you may not be able to carry anything on your person but in a bag instead.

The first thing that comes to mind: Get a TSA compatible knifeless multi tool just to like clip to a keychain. I know Leather Man has some.

Secondly, for when you can carry a knife, some for of sturdy shorter slip joint or a friction folder (like the Japanese Higonokami) just to be on the safe side.
>>
>>32996377
lol good question.

First off I have a knife case to centralize everything (pic related) so I can open it and see all my options.

Secondly, my more carried/more liked knives are in the first two rows.

Then I consider what I am doing. If I'm working a labor job or planning some actual work, I almost always grab my Cold Steel Code4 (front row 2nd from the far right). Since I'm in school now, I tend to grab a more "civilized" blade, normally my Boker Tux Kwaiken, ZT 0562cf, or Kershaw premium Skyline, these 3 also match (yeah call me a fag) my Pen of choice, a Mathew Martin 400 series in Titanium and Carbon Fiber.

But some days I just feel like carrying something different. I've been carrying my Eagle a lot (knife on top in pic related). Also my Spyderco Tuff is my favorite knife, and I tend to carry it on good days.

What do you think about balisongs? They are all my kid can talk about. I've bought him several Chinese clones and he's gotten really good doing tricks, but they seem basically useless for much else. The ones he wants are like $400-500 and they don't seem to have any more work in them than a 100-$200 folder. I get the niche market thing, but the markup on these is outrageous for a production knife. Is there a way to get them cheaper or should I make him wait til he's old enough for a job? He's really fuckin good, but I don't see a way for him to monetize his talent. He just does vids of himself and posts em on the webs.

I actually have very little experience with Balis. They have never really interested me.

I would look at the Bradly Kimura line, if I recall they are actually made by Benchmade. They are like $130ish and I've heard good things about them, but they maybe a little bit on the small side to be dedicated trick knives. Of course there is Benchmade, but most the large ones are $200+, but they are pretty high up there in the industry.

Does he want an Alpha Beast by chance? They really are the best production ones you can get. Of course they are $360 though and hard to come by.
>>
>>32996026

There comes a point at which you move away from the lower cost production blades and start getting into the midtech and trade +cash for more expensive customs segment where you just say "fuck it" and buy what makes you happy. You end up with a bunch of knives regardless, the only difference is how much your collection cost you to acquire.

Just ask all of those guys that paid $800 or more for hinderers that you can add to cart for under $450 these days.

What are you looking for in particular? Like a sharpening set up advice? I've got plenty of experience with sharpening, I do it to fund my knife/sword hobby, and willing to answer questions.

For general reference, I recommend the Spyderco Sharpmaker and some whetstones for starters.

I use ad pretty spec'd out Wicked Edge for most normal knives. A Spyderco Sharpmaker for serrations. A 1x30 belt sander (various belts) for axes, machetes, cleavers, in some cases swords. Whetstones and water stones free hand for chisels and straight razors. And I'm thinking of getting a Work Sharp specifically for swords.

ESEE quit endorsing the RAT line and had Rowen make their blades because they felt Ontario quality control was too low. I also love the ESEE warranty (you can send them a video of you cutting the knife in half with a bandsaw and they'll still send you a new one), and the knowledge that all of their products have been field tested in Peru. They do make knives in 440c(?) or something, but Jeff Randall (ESEE founder) says he doesn't like them and only makes them because of customer demands. He even says he prefers the Izula and a cheap machete over his larger knives, he's open about personal preferences. I just like my knife and was never crazy about Ontario. Get whatever you perceive to be better.

I love the pikal, best defensive folder.
I carry it often but never by itself. It's not a very utilitarian blade and I only have whetstones to sharpen with, so I can't touch up serrations or recurves.

it is my only ZT. It does everything I need of it, and their other models are similar enough, so I don't have plans for more. It's not often I buy more than one knife of a given brand.

Lol, I was just sharpening it for a client, but I was surprised when he pulled it out, it's almost a meme of a knife. A Tops Tracker #1

Honestly from the limited time I had with it, it's more of a novelty, not that practical, and really expensive for not that functional of a knife. Seriously, $200 for a knife that I would never actually use considering all the beastly knives for that price... That is to say it's not "cool", if I did not have soo many knives I want at that price point, I would probably buy one.

Is knives of alaska any good or should i just stick with fallkniven and such?
>>
>>32999268
I've no personal experience with Knives of Alaska, but I've heard plenty of good things. From what I gather they are well made but "utilitarian" in design, build, and functionality. It shows in their edge grind, it's not pretty, but it is sharp.

With Fallkniven you are going to get a much higher Fit&Finish, and it's going to be a proven and well executed design, if you don't like it, most likely it's because you chose the wrong one for your personal use/taste. That being said you will probably pay a hefty Premium over a KOA.

So it really comes down to what you are looking for. To me the KOA may have a lot more character to it, which is not to be underestimated. My all time favorite knife is the Spyderco Tuff, because it has soo much character, that being said I tend not to carry it often for more functional designs, as maybe KOA vs Fallkniven.

My Triage is actually a 915, the modified Sheepsfoot version.

It's a damn good knife. I carried and used the hell out of it for a couple of years while working in an auto shop and it performed great. Very solid edge retention and not a speck of corrosion despite constant exposure to chemicals and being rinsed in the sink and then blown off with a bit of compressed air and all kinds of other abuse. The orange G10 cleans up great with a Magic Eraser and a couple of minutes, too.

The blue knife next to it is indeed an old Benchmade, the 10700/Nagara. It was actually my first non-shit knife, and despite being a Red Class, which means made in China, I still think it's pretty nice. 9cr steel, anodized Ti handles, nice mirror polished scales and satin blade, etc.

not that anon, but I have a tracker of my own, and to me, it's a perfect representation of the 1980s "survival knife" design - big, heavy, and meant to replace all your tools if you need it to.

Thing is - most knives will do that anyway, and a 4'' blade will do most of the things you need it to do, and be much more handy than a 550 gram (21 ounce) tracker to boot.

If you want a knife to dick around with, and have the money to burn, sure - tops makes high quality knives, and the tracker will take anything you throw at it - i've used mine to cut, chop, i've used it as a shovel, and a makeshift hammer.

It's still ugly as hell, and heavy as sin though, and you never want to be in the woods with just one blade anyway, so the point about having a knife that can do everything is moot.

To give my usual song and dance:

For a total beginner to sharpening who wants to learn to freehand sharpen, I recommend getting some cheap knives to practice on, a Norton India IB8 combination coarse/fine oilstone, some mineral oil, and watching this video and practicing what you are shown until you can repeatably match the results at the end of the video.

In my view it's the easiest and fastest way to learn how to freehand. If you have any problems feel free to ask in /k/ knife threads as I'm usually at least lurking and can try and help out.

You are going to have to look up specific laws, it's not hard with Google. I know NY as a whole is not that bad, considering I like in Nj and don't have too much of a problem, but NYC is a BIG no no for knives. NYC is one of the most restricted civilian areas in the US for carrying knives.

Life in California is suffering.. So much want for an OTF
>>
>>33005457
I referenced this early (see >>32963473)

Check out the Microtech UTX-70, specifically designed for California legality. Unless the laws have changed since, and I'm not sure if it was just legal to own, or also legal to carry.
>>
>>33007030

The general rule for california is that if it isn't illegal yet, someone will make it so.
>>
>>33007030
Another Calicuck here, we can own whatever we want, it's just carrying that's restricted.

I don't "get" OTFs though. It's a cool gimmick but that's all I see it as, and you give up a lot in reliability, blade size, and ergonomics for not much practical benefit. If I were really concerned about guaranteed deployment every time, I think I'd carry an assisted flipper.

ummmm.... where have you been lately? Colorado? Regardless of political opinion, you can't flat out deny that the legalization movement is making head way... not under current administration, who knows.
>>

I completely agree with you, I own a OTF and many different types of manuals... But by far the fastest is the simple Emerson Wave design, it can be open as you pull it from your pocket. So technically my fastest knife is my XL Espada lol

But laws are not always sensible. Banning switch blades and butterfly knives is a very easy way for politicians to make the "I'm taking weapons off the street" claim for public support, and there are very few people to oppose it. Luckily there are groups like Knife Rights to help lobby.

Okay I take it back on second thought. The more traditional Buck folders are nice, not the same quality they used to be, but still good. Also the new Marksman model, I've heard really good things about it. So those, yes, if they fit your fancy. For $80 though, if you want a supper functional knife, I can not recommend the Cold Steel Code4 ($70ish) enough, it's my go to hard use folder. Also Kershaw Skyline (made in US $40) is a modern classic, pretty much the modern 110, and you could even get the Damascus one in budget.

I believe the launch 1 is larger. The one in the pic is a launch 2. It's really nice. The action on L2 is very aggressive and at the same time very satisfying. Do to the size and weight of L1s blade, the action has less kick but you get more blade

Also - it is relatively rare to have a very meaningful discussion both here, and on /out/ - half the time you get retards desperately trying to convince themselves that a BK2 is a good knife, people who insist that no one should ever buy anything but the cheapest, shittiest knife they can find (usually a mora), because aparently spending money on quality knives makes you a clueless victim of marketing.

Then you have ka-bar loonies, who can't help but insist that "muhrrreens means quality", a handful of mall ninjas and only occasionally you find someone worthwile to talk to.

thanks for your input.

My Rebar was honestly a piece of shit. The big flathead warped turning a screw on a brand new grinder and now everything on that side is shitty to open and close.

I vastly prefer the Swisstool Spirit when it comes to an MT in the Rebar's size and weight range. It's actually my favorite MT ever. Sadly I lost mine last year and still haven't gotten around to picking up a replacement.

Go browse around the knifemakers' forum on Bladeforums, you could get a pretty nice custom for what the Benchmade costs.
>>
>>33013471
I'm sure there are many custom options. I'd rather go with a trusted blade that is widely liked. Is there something like the benchmade bushcrafter that exists? Something with decent steel, an ok grind, no retard murder grinds and something scandi at 25 degrees or similar without serrations or a stupid tanto or kabar ridiculous shape?

I think I painted myself into a corner. I just would like to know if there are options or if I cornered the market for my needs.

If you want good no-nonsense knife that'll see you through a nuclear apocalypse I recommend checking out sissi- and jääkäripuukkos. Just the right mixture of simple traditional design with brutally utilitarian modern features
https://www.varusteleka.com/en/group/puukkos-and-leukus/494
>>
>>33013548
Those knives look great in terms of steel but I'm worried about the comfort of the grip. Have you used any of them?
>>
>>33013567
I have a m07 sissipuukko and the grip is excellent and I think jääkäripuukko might be even comfier, at least if you dig a meaty handle
>>
>>33013586
What do you typically use it for? They seem like a nice fit for my needs. Thank you for the heads up about that company.

I'm not gonna be batoning anything or being silly. I just want a good belt knife that won't fuck up. How has your knife been for your needs? What are your needs?
>>
>>33013503

What you are looking for is a high quality puukko. There are a number of makers, buy the only one I'm familiar with off ha d is Helle. I'm sure others here can chime in with more.
>>
>>33013614
It does literally everything you could ask from a knife and without complaint, that's the whole point of it. Kind of sucks tho because now I have a real hard time justifying buying new knives lel. But if you don't plan on batoning I'd recommend the shorter versions, m07 or jääkäri 110

Yeah that's an idea, but probably better off just seeing how we can help out the already established group; Knife Rights.

>>33012247
Lol so your one of the BK2 haters on that /out thread. I've already stated my opinions, it's objectively a very inefficient knife, but it's not useless, and sometimes some people find the more inefficient tool more fun to use. I'm thinking I'm going to have to get one now, and see if I can regrind it into a good knife... I'll post the project in /out if I ever get around to it.

But I've actually have had quite a few good conversations about knives here on /k, not so much on /out.

>>33013234
Yeah does not look that great of a design. The only BlackHawk I recommend is the Buck/Tops 650. Yes it is a 1/4 inch thick knife, but it have really great ergonomics and a thin enough hollow grind. (knife on right in pic related)

>>33013301
Maybe, but they are also a lot of fun.

>>33013456
I find hatchets a bit useless, consider a small ax, sometimes called a Hudson Bay Ax. My go to carry ax is a Snow&Neally Hudson Bay ax. Not nearly as refined as a Grans Bruk, but after I reshaped it a bit and thinned the geometry, it's served me very well for quite a few years. It's a good idea to have a small ax and a medium knife, like an Esee 4... now personally sometimes I just carry a small knife and a big chopping knife for the fun of it.

>puukko
thanks for letting me know the word for what I'm looking for. Do you know a common maker in the usa that produces knives in that style?
>>
>>33013689
Thanks for your input. I have no greed and just want one good knife that won't fuck up. I'm glad you're happy with your choice. I will probably follow a similar path.

Opinions on balisongs? Are they evil? Are they usable apart from stabbing people for money?
>>
>>33013696
I'm not too familiar with the style or the makers. I just happen to have this vintage one (pic related) from the 70's that I came across. It's a Tapio Wirkkala (probably spelled wrong) by Hackman.

One of the thinnest geometry knives I own, it's a joy to whittle with.

Also, I assume you know Mora right? Because they make good Puukkos for really cheap. And If you just want to try out the design before buying a more expensive one, or even just stay with the mora.
>>
>>33013732
I had one when I was 12. They are fun to flip around if you need a hobby. Not very useful as real knives.
>>
>>33013732
See:
>>32996464
>>32996536

I like them, very little experience with them though, never been my focus, but they are almost a sub category of the knife hobby.
>>
>>33013737
Yeah I've had moras before they are decent but not a lifetime knife or something I'd be ok taking into the wilderness.
>>
>>32996464
just buy your kid a benchmade and let him paint it or something so he can be a special snowflake. that's what all bali flippers want anyway.

encourage it and get him a webcam. I wish my kid had interests.
>>
>>33013696
Depends on how much you want to spend. Check out lt wright lagom bushknife for the high end. Or you can order online - helle, ahti, kauhavan puukkopaja - that's off the top of my head.
>>
>>33013853
the bench bushcrafter is about 200 i could push up to 3 or 4 im an adult with a job but i really don't see a better knife that is widely available and custom knives seem shady at best and mostly overpriced and cumbersome.
>>
>>33013885
Then really check out the lagom bushknife by lt wright, or the skookum bush tool, but that one m8ght be hard to get (still around $200, but with a waiting list).

Look up a Benchmade protagonist
I don't one have but they look quite nice, they've got two kinds, either a drop point or tanto
>>
>>33013963
How do they compare with the Nimravus? The sticky recommended the Nim and the Protagonist seems very similar. They seem too light and the grip seems insubstantial for my purposes. What is your experience?

I don't personally own anything from Protech, but they are a high quality company, and have a good reputation for autos. The knife is going to be good quality, and is good materials, but being an auto it's not as practical and more expensive for a similar quality EDC knife. But practicality is not really the selling point of an auto, it's if you like it, if you think it's worth it.

I've had a Protech Newport CF (pic related) on my want list for a long time, but have yet to get it.

>>33013763
Well to be honest the wag moras are made right now is perfectly fine. There's a video by wealljugleknives on yt of the eldris (the little one) hammerdd into a log and lifging it with a lot of latteral stress like it's nothing, and it's a 2mm thick blade with partial tang.
>>
>>33014028
Well, I live in shitty California do I don't own one right now, though I do want one, so unfortunately I can't tell you much
>>
>>32972537
Send it back to Benchmade. They'll probably fix it for free, most you'd have to pay would be like 30 bucks.

Alright, one of these just arrived. It's every bit of awful you'd expect from a Soviet military pocket knife, but also every bit of magical. It's NOS surplus, and came in grease and paper like an AK.

How do I get the "cosmoline" (I'm not sure if it's actually slav cosmoline or just some generic packing grease) off? I got some benzine, denatured alcohol and acetone-substitute nail polish remover. Or should I get kerosene or something?

Oh yeah and it's larger than you'd think and also fucking heavy as fuck since it's all steel.

Pic still not mine but came exactly like this.
>>
>>33015592
>>33015655
I'm assuming this thing uses slipjoints? How are they?

Also, where did you get this anyway?
>>
>>33015677
Yes. Heavy as fuck. I could only open the small screwdriver/wire stripper with a tool, but that might just be the pivot gunked up with grease.

You can find NOS ones on Ebay from Russia, just search for Soviet military sapper knives or something like that.

A lot. February always sucks. Six inches last night, like a foot on Sunday, supposed to be more this week I think.

I'm almost jealous, it's starting to feel like spring here in New Jersey, it's been in the 40-60s (F) the past week, and sunny, with only a few flurries. We only got like 6 inches total this winter, compared to like 24-30ish last year.

This sounds autistic, but there is nothing more fun than cutting up snowmen and snow balls with a machete.

I hate going from zero to three feet of snow in a matter of two weeks. I'd much rather have it a little at a time.

I lived on mdi for a while, winters were miserable. Hardly any snow, just ice and wind and cold.

Found this pic while reading up on the Soviet knife I just got, next among others a SAK and a demo knife for size comparison. It is really larger than I expected, I thought it was going to be the size of a more basic Alox Victorinox.
