Can we actually talk about trapping? I've been thinking about doing it but it seems cruel to the animal. Are traps supposed to kill the animal through exposure/starvation or does it just hold the animal until you kill it by shooting it or something?

Depends on what you're trapping and what kind of traps you're using.

Some kill the animal outright by breaking its neck/back, some don't really injure the animal at all and they have to be dispatched (either by you or the elements or dehydration/starvation or by an opportunistic predator).

It's considered ethical to check your trap line daily because of this.

well that's the thing, I just started eating meat and imo hunting is the most ethical way to do that. The animal gets to live a nice life in the wild until it's killed painlessly. I can logically understand that but I still get upset when it comes down to actually doing it.

that's the thing, it's a damned if you do damned if you don't situation. If I hunt I'll feel guilty about taking a life, but if I buy storebought meat I'll feel guilty about the shitty painful life the animal lead before it was executed and how terrible it must have been. I would've stayed vegetarian if it wasn't affecting my health, but that's not an option for me right now

I agree in part, but choosing the time of the death as one premature to what else might have happened makes me feel bad. The suffering is the upshot ironically, as the animal might die an early death but it does so instantly, whereas left to nature it would assuredly die painfully albeit after leading a long life.

The ethical dilemina isn't over the end of the life itself, but rather the potential life that was lost. As the animal loses life, so too does it lose the capacity to feel pleasure as well as pain. The animal is saved from suffering but is also denied happiness. Of coursse you can take it to the nihilistic extreme and say neither of those matter and that in the end there is nothing but that's a bit too heavy for a soviet macrame forum
