I like the idea of their solar powered one but I hear they aren't too reliable. Any input on reliability?

You can turn off the outer ring, it is good for shot guns though as it estimates spread.

I don't know about the solar ones. I have had good luck buying from primary arms, and bought a non solar model off their eBay page. They have pretty deep discounts on used and mounted, or blemed items.

Any optics that use common batteries such as AA and CR 123a?
2032s are not as common
AA and CR 123 are used in flashlights and other electronics + Are cheap
