Take a piece of paper, don't fucking argue, just goddamn do it. Draw like a cross between an L and a J on it, like a short "tailed" J, it needs the bend because of I told you "draw an L" when we get to the next step you'd say "but I hit a 90 degree angle, my tiny brain can't conceive of a bend!

Now that you have the L drawn fold the paper into a tube to that the long part of the L goes along the long part of the tube and the short arm of the L wraps around the tube.

Now, with the paper a tube, put your finger at the beginning on the line you drew amd ONLY MOVING THE PAPER, bring your finger to the end of the line. As you slide the paper your finger reaches the bend in the L, the only way for it to get to the end is for you to ROTATE THE PAPER.

That's how it fucking works you goddamn monkeys. The bolt uses a cam and a rotating locking lug. Your finger represents a cam that when it reaches a cam slot forces the locking lug part (the paper) to rotate. The bolt is more than one piece and the "point of rotation" is held in by pins, so it's captive but not permanently.

Yes, locking lugs male sense, yes, WITH A CYLINDER it's trivial to turn lateral force into rotational force through the use of cams.

You have many types. A "direct blowback" is literally the recoil moving the bolt backward.

The AK uses a gas tube in the barrel to redirect gas against a piston that pushes A DIFFERENT PART of the bolt carrier group than the main explosion which allows it to unlock the lugs and pushes the carrier back.

The AR uses a direct impingement system wherein a gas tube let's some high pressure gas push on the gas tube on the carrier pushing it back the exact way that pulling on the charging handle pulls back. This acts on the bolt carrier and not the bolt face allowing the cam to unlock the lugs.

There are many systems, most direct some energy to a different part of the carrier so it can be pulled back and unlocked.

if you removed the gas tube it would essentially turn the ak into a straight pull as no gasses are acting on the piston.

if you removed the bcg (and welded a piece of metal to the bolt, to turn it by hand), you now have a traditional bolt action. (however you'd have to manually chamber a round and put the bolt in place)
