I want to learn more about tanks and armored vehicles in general. I already know a fair amount from my time in the army but I want to educate myself without spending any money. What are some good resources to learn about specs and shit? Commencing random dump

Without being sarcastic at all, the internet is a good place to start.

Between google and wikipedia you should be fairly set up to know the basics, and more importantly, know where to go from t here.

I've considered that but I want to know more like what are some good sites or forums to check out? Somewhere the information is organized neatly
>>
>>32937846

Wikipedia for starters

Tanks-encyclopedia is pretty good and has nice pictures

I don't visit any tank forums so I can't help with that
>>
>>32937846
Well, you can't do any more advanced learning unless you get a subscription to Janes.

Beyond the internet, its extremely specialized books with tables of numbers tallying kills in the back of a library.
>>
>>32937846
for burger tanks the american fighting vehicle database seems pretty good
>>
>>32937827
Anymore similar to this, one of the best combat videos I've seen.

Tank-net.com is the best english speaking tank and afv discussion forum that I know.
For websites and blogs, there are tankarchives.blogspot.com(old ww2 stuff) , gurkhan.blogspot.com(news about modern Russian afv, the site is in russian), afvdb.50megs.com(lots of technical data on American afv), dtic.mil(a lot of technical and science papers on various military subjects but you will have to dig around with keywords like "composite armor", "shaped charge", "penetrator", etc), http://www.steelbeasts.com/files/category/94-russian-manuals/(Russian technical and field manuals, in Russian of course, but have a lot of good drawings).

A good source for WWI tank information is Landships II, which will lead you to suggestions for books for further reading. It likewise contains information for the more obscure prototypes during the early years of tanking, including the seldom-known domestic efforts of countries such as Spain and Mexico.

http://www.landships.info/landships/index.html

For anything more modern, you can't go wrong with Janes as suggested by >>32939912. Tank-net is the best tank forum for general purposes, and while I might get some flak from saying this, the Chieftan of the World of Tank forums (the NA one) is very thorough whenever he focuses on something, having managed to uncover until recently unavalible images for more obscure tanks such as the T28. 4chan's own /thg/ is a good source of starting information for any specific vehicle, but it hasn't really be properly archived so whether you learn what you want to or not is rather hit or miss.

Man, I love Janes. Are there like membership levels? All of the computers on my work network get access but there are still features I can't seem to be able to access
>>
>>32943520
i started with the base membership, plain jane's.
>>
>>32937817
/thg/, and the associated dropbox is a good place to start I would think .

The internet. Search engines are a thing. Not joking. If you spent any serious time at it you wouldn't be asking because you'd be studying instead.

I haven't finished going through the /thg/ dropbox yet (I didn't know it even existed til now) but is there anything on it for the design of treads and suspensions? I design fake ones and I'd like a relatively simple explanation of them without having to get an engineering degree. It helps the designs if my fake shit looks real.

>The internet.
there's a lot of bullshit on the internet. asking people what websites they respect isn't a bad first step in learning
>>
>>32942067
Neat, thanks for that.

Wish to there was a YouTube channel like C&Rsenel to go through development
>>
>>32947422
I think just telling him what we DON'T respect and why is better. Warn him of some notorious memes and shitty sources. Beyond that, it's all just self-directed research, both on the internet and through libraries.

So who wants to meme him up on
>Belton Cooper/Ronsons
>Achtung Panzer

Here's a general research tip: when you go to libraries, go to the main branches instead of neighborhood branches. There will be a much greater range of books right there on the shelves where you can read them a bit before deciding what to check out. Whereas if you go to local branches you may have to just order books sight unseen. There's lots of good shit in libraries.
>>
drop by in /thg/ sometimes
It has some neat discussions and info
