not an expert, but I've heard those tend to be beat to hell given the grenade firing rounds had like 3 times the kick a regular round did. I'd be really careful about making sure it's in good shape. Looks cool though.

Ian did a video on them and it's really neat to see how the grenade cup works. Heck if you could make some blanks you might even be able to turn it into a "grenade" launcher again, and just shoot tennis balls out of it or something.

So I ordered a Spanish mauser and went to look at it today, but I have to wait 10 days to pick it up, so no pics yet. Anyways, it was kinda packed with grease, I guess is what it is. Can I have tips for cleaning it? Also, 7x57 is the same as 7mm mauser correct? Because they sent 100 rounds of 7mm mauser

Immerse the metal parts in mineral spirits for 24-48hrs; you can pull them out and just wipe them dry. For the wood heat it up with a heat gun or hair dryer (125°F is what you're aiming for) and wipe off the cosmoline as it liquefies.
>Also, 7x57 is the same as 7mm mauser correct?
Yes.
>>32938660
Hey I got 300rds of that a few months ago; still haven't shot it. Remember to wear your eyepro, especially when shooting older ammo.
>>
>>32938630
Yes, 7mm Mauser is 7x57.
Cleaning the wood use a heat gun or stick it in some black trash bags in the sun for a few hours of you don't know what snow is. For the metal use boiling water or kerosene.

Picked up this Swedish M96 for $310 at local fun show. All numbers matching except rear sight. Stripped her down and cleaned her, she was dusty as hell. Bore seems immaculate.

Only issue is front sight ring is loose and wobbles. Pretty much every pic on google I could find makes it look like the sight is mounted directly to the barrel instead of on a separate ring.

>Pretty much every pic on google I could find makes it look like the sight is mounted directly to the barrel instead of on a separate ring.
It's mounted on a ring; they just blend the ring into the barrel profile so well when they polish it up before and after bluing. The band is held in place via a set screw hidden below the front sight dovetail, and silver solder between the ring and the barrel. The set screw needs to be checked and perhaps replaced, and then the sight base re-soldered.

Beautiful stock on that one.

So my No4 1/2 was made at the Maltby factory, but the bolt (same SN) has "D" marks on it meaning it was made at the Enfield plant. Was this normal or is my bolt forced matched?

Another good option would be a Mauser of some sort, they were made in several calibers.

OP here, kinda got spooped after looking around. I have no snap caps but the guy told me he has done the mad minute with brass and the magazine worked fine.

I've been watching videos and heard head spacing issues and stuff so thats got me nervous, plus I would be shooting .308 if I get it.
Probably just cheap tula (loaded lighter than most .308 so it would be fine I would think) and maybe some hunting rounds if I eventually do that. Or what ever brass 7.62 is cheapest.

>Also muh rear locking lugs.

Should I be concerned about this?

Is $400 a good deal? I would probably need to get it done through and ffl as well.

I don't have a ton of money so I am just nervous to spend $400 on a indian rifle.

I'll probably try to sell my cut maverick and type 53 to recover some cost, since .308 is cheaper than 54r. Or might try to trade it for a long nugget since I like how they look.

You're probably fine, but I can understand the concern. Maybe try to find a gunsmith you can meet up at who can look it over before you buy? Also you don't need to have long guns transferred at an FFL, you can do them through private sales, unless you live in some shit state that doesn't allow it.

>>32940557
I've considered that myself before, but I'm so far in the hole now I might as well try to finish it up at least.

>>32940580

My brother found a magazine for one at an antique shop for $10, he turned around and sold it for something like $270 on ebay, it's crazy how much those things and their parts go for. Still would love one some day, but not unless I win the lottery or something.
>>
>>32937115
their bores are always mint, numbers matching is pretty common, the stock on that one is decent considering poo in the loo rifles usually have the shittiest wood ever

i watched a $400 ishapore here in california go unsold for 5 months, the seller eventually tried dropping his price to $350 then withdrew his ad. you have the power, its a buyers market. i would offer $250

i bought mine for $120 back in 2005, it would be hard for me to buy one for any more than $200
>>
>>32940600
I could do a private sale, but most people are bitchy about ffl's, plus no ccw.

>bought a Remington 510 targetmaster
>single shot .22 bolt action
>pre 68 so there isn't even a serial number
>guy insists on ffl anyway
>>
>>32937115
edited to add it looks like the owner stripped and cleaned the wood himself, so he probably thought of himself as a professional gunsmith and i would be cautious he didnt fuck up or "improve" any other aspect of the rifle. the metal looks refinished as well. i would use the fact its not in original condition as a bargaining chip to beat him down

they are nice accurate rifles but not very collectible
>>
>>32940352
>Are Israeli 98k's that good?
They're fine. About half of the ones on the US market took a detour through Honduras (or was it Guatemala) before coming to the US so they can sometimes be in rough shape; just check them over for pitting and the like before buying. Israel made the switch from 8x57mm to 7.62x51mm before NATO even officially adopted it. Most are ex-German Kar.98k but just about every standard-length M98 the Israelis could get their hands on was used (I have seen an ex-Ethiopian FN M1930 receiver used to build an Israeli Kar.98k).

This, I almost bought one myself once for $400, then decided to check the bore last second only to find it was a complete sewer pipe without even a hint of rifling left.

Why is it only $250 and no one bidding on it? Are enfields traditionally this cheap? If it's good (and it looks pretty good for a milsurp from what I can tell as a new guy) it'd be cool to own an aussie enfield.

Figured as much. I'm just kind of goofing around on gunbroker right now trying to get an idea of value for various rifles. My best odds of finding good rifles around here are searching estate sales and small gun shows, so the best I can do is do the research now.

Odds are if I find something that's a good deal I won't have much time to jump on it. Sitting there on my phone looking it up would probably be a bad idea.

I've gotten lots of luck on gunbroker. You just have to have a good eye and searching. I bought my pre-armistice, unfired since prooving, Mle-1936 for only $600, which was the starting price, because the seller didn't list it as the usual name of MAS-36. It was like MAS-1936.

Ishapore rifles use to be pretty cheap and last time i priced on in a shop it was $350 and that was 3 years ago so $400 doesn't seem all that bad to be honest. Plus it was not re-chambered to 308 it was made to use it and it will perform well. I'd say pick it up Enfield action and shoots a more common round what could you lose.

So I finally signed up for gunbroker. Are fraud, shadow bidding and other unscrupulous activities really as prevalent as they're made out to be?
>>
>>32943157
Depends who you deal with. But if you're hunting for surplus, you'll eventually see Sreisel. He can have good stuff occasionally (the Belgian 1889 from the last thread was his) but very often he shadow bids and will be fraudulent in his listings.
>>
>>32939767
>>32939291
Any time after an Enfield was made it was liable to be replaced by whatever parts. If your serial number matches you're good to go. What armourers did, even in peace time, was go through their box of spares and find any part that fit. From there they would hand fit as nessacary and inspect it, then re-serial the part to the rifle. Very common to find any upgraded or FTR'd rifle with parts from all over the place, and even rifles that haven't seen either of those two processes might have parts swapped out by unit armourers.

Italians are made of heavy gauge steel and parkerized which makes them very tight and abrasive. The brit clips were blued and made from stamped sheet metal if I recall so they are looser and smoother.

A lot of more experienced shooters I've met tend to claim the gun is more accurate than you are, but then again you're using a rifle that potentially fought in multiple wars and has been around in one configuration or another for over a hundred years.

That said, Finn mosins are supposed to be pretty nice.

He's demolishing free trade deals all over the place. Why the heck would he allow a huge surplus of highly desirable firearms to flood the market and run shitty modern American firearm companies out of business?

Now Soviet imports I could possibly see, but even there I'm skeptical. I'd imagine most of that surplus has gone to all the little brush wars and rebellions by this point.
>>
>>32953439
>highly desirable firearms to flood the market and run shitty modern American firearm companies out of business

would a boat load of m1 garands fuck any American companies up? I didn't think that many people would want to own an m1 garand other than milsurp fags. Seems like most fuckers just want AR-15s and AK-47s.

Yes, some Mauser models like Israeli-rebuilt Kar.98k, Chilean M1912/61, Brazilian MosqueFAL M968, Spanish FR8 short rifles and FN Police carbines are chambered for 7.62x51mm. Norwegian-rebuilt Kar.98k are chambered for .30-'06 Springfield, as well as post-WW2 FN M1930 Mausers made for Belgium and Luxembourg.
>>
>>32957207

Only if it's been bubbad.

The last bolt action battle rifle made by a military was the ishapore 2a1 and it does take 7.62 nato (.308 Winchester)

Few of the Spanish arsenals rechambered to .308 also.

If you want a modern cartridge you're better off buying a modern rifle to go with it

Well yeah. This is one of the ones that Century assembled and has a new production stock.
>>
>>32958366
I wasn't aware they assembled any of those.
>>
>>32958590
IIRC, it went something like Egypt ordered complete rifles as well as many finished rifle kits to be assembled later, with the intent of starting production of the SAFN domestically. Instead they began making the Hakim, then the Rasheed, then the AK and the SAFN parts were more or less forgotten, until Century bought them up along with the surplus rifles, used the parts to repair already finished rifles and used what was left to build complete rifles from NOS parts. Century-built rifles have serial numbers in Western Arabic numerals that begin with a "D" letter prefix, and the receiver rings have the eagle crest rather than a crown. The Century-made stocks are distinctive because they are beech with a dark walnut stain and have no cut for a unit marking disc, and often have a plastic buttplate.
