Here's the dealio -- west launched a clandestine propaganda / political operation that booted the pro-Russian leader and get a pro-West leadership in. Russia freaked out because they saw their Crimera assets being lost and their borders being weakened.

So Russia went in to stir up ethnic Russians in the East Ukraine, provide them war material, clandestine military support, and the war is kicked off after a sham referendum.

The Ukrainian national armed forces were left in an abysmal state thanks to years of neglect, corruption, and demilitarization under the pro-Russian leadership. The government tapped far-right nationalistic ethnic polish as motivated combat forces. So, basically, it's a proxy war between Russia and the pro-west Ukraine government + western supporters using ethnic Russians vs ethnic Polish. That's not to say there isn't ethnic crossover, but that's basically the nature of the conflict.

PRD is another topic.

So figuring out who the good guys is isn't that easy. If the West wins, Ukraine could benefit at least in the short with economic prizes. Russia is more likely to take care of them in the long run though.

Whether or not you guys choose to believe me is your own decision:
I got back from spending roughly three months in Donetsk about a month ago.Met some great people, had some good times, learned a lot of truths rather than the uncertainties you find about the war on the internet
I'd say one of the biggest things that surprised me is the sheer amount of people actually from Donbass fighting, as opposed to Russian citizens. Granted yes, there were a decent amount of Russian citizens who came and volunteered, but nobody ordered them to, and came on their own accords. It's like if a civil war erupted in Canada, and a lot of Americans citizens rushed over to help fight. Same concept.
One good friend of mine, who I still sty in contact with, was in the Ukrainian army, then a Donetsk (city) police officer before the war, and since the war began, he's been fighting the Ukrainiangovernment since.
So many people here don't understand the war over there, and end up just believing various media online which all host differing levels of propaganda, almost all of which pushing the idea that this is a war between Ukraine and Russia, as opposed to Ukraine and Novorussia.
However, it is very true that Russia supplies the DPR and LPR with equipment, which is actually a good thing, otherwise the Novorussian armies would be obliterated, and Russia has the heart to give an army of 30,000 men a chance against an army of 300,000 men.
What really baffles me is the same people who sport Gadsden flags or other freedom related paraphernalia also usually condemn the people of Novorussia,but what they don't know is that the people of Novorussia stand for similar if not the same values those symbols of freedom represent.The people of Novorussia simply want to be governed the way they want to be governed, not how some far-off bureaucrat in Kiev wants to govern them.They've simply grown apart from the rest of Ukraine and wish to have closer ties to Russia,as opposed to western Europe and the EU.

Ironically enough, the best faction appears to be the Right sector, AKA Ukrainian Nazis. They seem to be the ones who want a Sovereign Ukraine, that doesn't have to suck off the EU every time it needs something or wants to do something.

When i started looking into the conflict ~2014 I was unquestionably sided with all Pro-Ukrainians, but now I really don't fucking know. It kind of comes off as the American Civil War if the Union was split into two different types of nationalist parties.

I have a conservative friend who works in the government with American/Ukrainian relations who is pro Ukrainian but globalist as well.

The whole situation really takes the political spectrum and throat fucks it, imo. I really still don't fully understand the political situation, and as a non-Ukrainian likely never will.

I was in Kiev last summer. It felt similar to being in the US. A lot of military propaganda and enhanced (see visible) security but everybody just getting on with day-to-day life. There is occasional isolated violence i.e. the odd assassination or violent attacks on people of note but they are targeted so the likelihood of you getting involved in something to do with the conflict is pretty much zero.

Obviously the further south east in the country you are going the less true this is.

Life in the city center of Donetsk is fairly similar. People getting along with their lives despite the sound of artillery and MG fire at night in the distance. Decent bit of soldiers walking around the city, usually just guys on leave. Good people there.

I think if they brokered some sort of peace by giving up some of Donbass and allowing those who want to move jurisdictions to move into Russia, it would be great without setting precedent that Russia can just basically bully and carve Ukraine completely. I don't like the idea of this being a 6+ year proxy war between Central, Western Europe and the US and Russia with Ukraine caught in the middle.

The problem is that Crimea itself was a hard pill for them to swallow. You can rationalize it whatever way you want, but they lost a huge strategic asset when the Russians moved in an annexed that area. When the Russians keep moving in on their territory like this, it's pretty worrisome not just for Ukrainians - your CYKA UKROP HOHOL - but for everyone west of them as well. Poland, the Baltics, Czech Rep., and Hungary all get a little nervous as the buffer between them and Russia shrinks bit by bit.
