it actually feels nice :) i was skeptical also but i handled one at my local sports store. id give it a 9/10 for the knife (tool marks, but thats for all factory knives) and sheath 7/10 (strap gets in the way when unsheathing your knife, slightly cutting it if you let it)

I've never been one to spend $300-$500 on a knife, but you are out of your mind if you think there's no benefit to knives from good mfgs using excellent steel and very good locking systems.

If you're cutting open boxes and other easy shit, yeah you'll be fine with cheap shit. If you work with your knife cutting cables and lines all day, the good shit pays off. If you go out on the trail for a week+ at a time, a good knife is going to pay off. Hell if you just want a knife that can cut wires, open boxes, cut open deers for field stripping, be used as a survival tool when far from civilization on wood, line, etc...good blades pay off.

You are now aware the cheap blades are for NEETs while people who work with them for a living, or rely on them in unforgiving situations get real benefits from spending $100-$300.

If you can stretch up to $100 the Benchmade Griptilian is a good standby general purpose knife.

As far as multitools Leatherman is the standby, that's the one I keep in my truck or carry on me most of the time. Have been putting a Gerber Diesel through its paces for the last couple years and it has grown on me, especially for its ease of single handed use. Not a good pocket carry though as it's pretty thicc and the pliers poke out a little at the bottom. It's tough as nails and the finish makes it pretty rust proof.
>>
>>32932805
>>32932870

Ironically, I'd pay big bucks for a modern one hand opening, locking and closing folder with a similar blade geometry to an Opinel but in a low carbide steel at ~62 HRC.

Too bad no production folding knife maker produced such a knife. Luckily I can just carry small fixed blades in-pocket using kydex sheaths to get that kind of geometry.
>>
>>32933257

If the steel on an Opinel was run harder, the geometry would stand up to a lot more than you think.

The Calton Cutlery necker I paired here
>>32933465 is 0.070" at the spine and 0.010" at the shoulder to the edge bevel and I wouldn't hesitate to use it to whittle, even to whittle bamboo.

>Price gouging
I've had plenty of more expensive knives that were of worse quality and no cheaper ones that were of equal. You might pay a slight tax for the brand name, but you generally get what you pay for with them. Not that anon, but the Canyon Hunter has held its edge better than most any knives I've used in the same price range season after season gutting deer and doing other random shit in the field with.
>>
>>32929847
I was wondering if the grind was flat or concave, care to share?
>>
>>32933515
>2.75 inch blade
> $115
You can find plenty of knives that will perform equally for half the price. Dont get me wrong, i think its a great looming knife but youre paying for the name and that rubs me the wrong way.
>>
This thread sucks
>>
>>32933549
>perform equally
Please share. I'm not a shill for any brand, but I'm giving you honest first hand experience. Every blade that I've owned that looked better on paper has not held its edge like that knife does. It's been my go-to for field stripping deer and doing other random field activities for many seasons now. I've used a plethora of cheaper options over the years from folks like Gerber and Kershaw (both companies I respect, regardless of some iffy QC issues in the last decade). The Benchmade just stays sharp. I've run it through my own sharpener a few times in between seasons, but it really didn't even need that where some of the cheaper options have required multiple, focused sharpening efforts over the course of a single season.

You're not paying for looks or blade length of more QC and the quality/sharpness of the blade that is there.

If you have better alternatives in mind I would be interested to hear, maybe I've tried it or maybe I'll pick it up to give it a shot next season.
>>
>>32933564

You're not paying for looks or blade length but more for QC and the quality/sharpness of the blade that is there.

General consensus on Ganzo knives?

I know they're chinkshit, but even they get shit right every once in a while. And I figure for as cheap as they are it may not be a bad knockaround knife.

Anybody have personal experience with them?

Opinel â„–12. Simple, trusty, cheap. Simple mechanism, good comfy handle, and the steel is good too. My friend owns one for over a 20 years and it still works good, only wood got dark.

Are SAKs cool with you guys?

I'm worried about my Vic Forester one-hand opener (the one that's like the Soldier '08 / Trekker, but with a corkscrew instead of a Phillips driver on the back). Solid tool and all but unlike a simple folding knife the layer construction imparts a bit of side to side play on the blade, and there aren't any exposed screws or anything that can be tightened by the end user.
>>

Thats... weird. My forester is very old and "beaten", but this problem is yet to come.
>>
>>32933448

I've always been a Victorinox guy. Would you say that Leatherman makes a better knife? I've found a lot of Leatherman multis to have pretty rough finish.
>>
>>32934434
Maybe I'm manhandling it a bit, I dunno.
It feels weird, though, the saw blade sorta wiggles along with it and since you can partially feel that tool in your grip it makes for a really weird sensation.

Maybe the scales aren't as fully clamped down as they could be? Maybe there's gunk in there that's at fault?

It's not so bad as to make it unusable though, which is great because I really like this knife, but sometimes I worry something will snap and fuck my hand up somehow.

>>
>>32934491
I prefer Leatherman as a multitool but I use the knife more as a scraper (I'm a mechanic and beat the shit out of everything, what is worthy survives).

The least known cool Victorinox knife is their serrated paring knife. My sister worked an urchin boat and clued me to them. They are cheap, sharp and the serrations are fucking wonderful for cutting automotive and industrial hose, wire insulation etc.

They also work well for their intended purpose.

You are going to want a lower grit stone, maybe a 220-400 and a 600ish, then the 1000 and 6000.

Sharpening a dull knife starting at 1000 is like trying to clean a bathroom with a tooth brush.

Personally when I free hand, I use oil stones for the rough work, and then finish on water stones.

VG-10 is typically pretty good at edge holding.

How do you sharpen it? A lot of times that's the problem, you could be at too thin of an angle, or you could be leaving a burr which feels sharp but dulls almost instantly.

One of my most carried knives is VG-10, my Boker Tux Kwaiken, I sharpen it at 17 degrees per side, to a mirror polish. Typically I touch it up once a month or two, but how often people use their pocket knives varies greatly, so it's hard to compare with out doing actual tests.

I disagree, I think getting something that you know will hold up is better. I don't really use folders for camping, but for a budget, I would say something like the Cold Steel Finn Wolf. They are pretty cheap ($40ish), and their AUS8a is decent, and the Tri-aid lock is great.

For kitchen knives and light use EDC knives sharpened regularly, a 1000 grit waterstone is fine as a starting grit. For harder use knives (and especially if there are any visible nicks in the edge) then a lower grit (~320 grit) starting stone makes more sense.
>>
>>32935464
Well, I mean it does last way better than my buck quickfire or whatever it's called, but isn't Shit to my Benchmade Contego. Which makes sense, it's half the price.
I'm not saying that vg-10 is bad and I'll never buy it, I'm just looking to gather names on a sort of comparison. Like how is 154cm comparing to VG-10
As for cutting, it varies wildly from opening an orange and cutting cardboard, to cutting bailing twice and silage bale plastic

Hadn't done a whole Hell of a lot of out with my knives yet, but I've done construction and such, I can see a major benefit in knowing that your blade isn't gonna snap in your hands during a hard cut

Personally idk why you would go with a folding knife at all if you are doing heavy cutting like batoning.

If I'm in the woods, I always have a fixed blade with me, and I tend not to baton, I prefer to carry an ax.

pic related is the fixed blades I tend to carry the most. Divided into 3 groups, from right to left; light/carving use, general use, and heavy duty.

Lol assuming you are the same guy (>>32937720) good luck with that.

An un-established knife maker with nothing more than CAD renderings to show for your craftsmanship, and no talk of blade steel, handle materials, lock type, ect... Asking for even $500 is a shot in the dark.

Just look at Gavko's work (pic related). He established him self as a Fixed blade maker charging around $150 for his first few batches, and started to raise his prices over a year (as his quality increased) to $250 or so. And then he started to make folders, which are much more complex, and even then was only charging $400ish... He had to establish him self as a folding knife maker to build up his cost. Same with Will Moon

Charging $1,500 would put you up there with the oldfag knife makers, the guys who have been making custom knives for tens of years.

Yeah I can understand that... When I bought my Pelican, my collection was already too big, so I went with the 1500.

My plan is, and so far I've been good about it (you can see I have a few empty slots), is as I get new knives I'm selling the cheaper ones to make room for the more expensive ones.

I may eventually get a slim 8ish knife Pelican just for my really high end stuff. Also looking into getting like a 1600 for my sharpening equipment.

Yeah bruh, to be fair it's taken me maybe 4 years to get this far, saving every get a new knife every 3 months or so or trading one I didn't want. I still got 3 Ganzos tucked away in my tool box and truck and stuff. Usually carry one pocket knife and pair it with a modern folder for the day. My two most recent purchases were the Mudbugs in the back thanks to so guy ok /k/ who posted the link; got two because it took me forever to get those two GECs so I figured they would be rare to find in a couple months. Got a couple Chinese strider clones off DHgate in Titanium and D2 steel but they're not worth it, screws stripped and just aren't worth the 80bucks to get a fake, I'd rather buy more production spydercos; but to each their own.

I have to constantly stop myself from buying PM2 sprints and exclusives. I was looking at bentoboxshop the other day and when I saw their 204p domino + m390 pm2 combo I actually thought to myself "wow, that's not a horrible price for the two of them" as an excuse to buy another m390 pm2.

Instead, I picked up two more expensive knives so I could take a minute and just enjoy shit. We'll see how long that lasts.

Yeah they are worth it, and it makes your collection feel more complete than just having them lay around.

If you have some valuable fixed blades, it maybe worth getting one large enough to fit them. The deeper cases are tall enough to stack two on top of each other. I have a Kanetsune Nishiki and Tapio Wirkkala Puukko in mine. Along with some oil and maybe enough room to hid some torx drivers up top.

Someone saying "fudd knife" on here really triggered me. (First time I've used that term) I mean what the fuck, a knife is the most primitive, basic tool of a human being. For what? Tens of thousands of years, people got by with stone knives for skinning animals and scalping motherfuckers. Must be the Call Of Duty generation where a tacticool knife with a glass breaker and sand paper grip yields +5 attack damage points.
>>
>>32940476
>0770cf has 3.25" blade, 4.3" closed length
>0808 is the same
>0770cf is 3oz, 0808 is 4.3oz
They're both a fair amount larger than a Leek, although the 0770cf weighs the same as my stainless framelock (1660ST) but a hair more than my black linerlock (1660H3).

I just want a medium-sized, lightweight, slender knife with a thin but durable blade for EDC. Ideally I'd want a 2.75"-3.0" blade.

The 0770 is the right weight but the thing's massive AF, it's basically a not-shit version of the Kershaw Thistle.

I can understand the sentiment... I just prefer larger blades, for me the 0770 and Kershaw Skyline is almost a touch small. Most commonly I carry my ZT 0561cf, Boker Tux Kwaiken, or Al Mar HD Eagle (supper light and slim, but 9' long).
>>
>>32940617
I'm pretty sure the shortest ZT knife is the 0900. It has a 2.7 inch blade, but it is 4.3 ounces, which you seem to not want.
You might want to look at an 0450 then. It has a 3.25 inch blade, but is only 2.9 ounces.

Good luck, so far so good I would say. How are you going to stock remove? you have a belt sander or grinder? And you have plans for heat treatment yet or are you going to out source it?

I've got a bunch of 1095 laying around, just never did anything with it. I got a good ban saw last year, so once I am bothered to get a good metal cutting blade, I'll finally do something.

>>32940924
I do too much delicate/fine cutting to do well with a thick or wide blade, one of the reasons I've always loved my Leeks or my old 3-blade Buck folder (back when they were made in the US out of carbon steel, thing was a hand-me-down from my grandpa). I suppose weight isn't too much of an issue as long as they stay under half a pound, but thickness is a big one. I'm not cutting things that require a ton of hand pressure so I can get away with a really skinny handle, and it doesn't interfere with using the pocket it's clipped to nearly as much as a fat knife (I also have one of the earlier BM Griptilians and that thing's like 3/4" thick, renders the pocket unusable because I can't get my hand past it without losing skin to the super rough grip scales).

>>32940939
Dat's fat tho. It's literally chode: the knife.
>>
>>32941071
>Dat's fat tho. It's literally chode: the knife.
Which is why I don't like it either despite being a ZTfag.
It just doesn't seem like ZTs are going to do well for you. Their grinds aren't exactly the best for fine, precision work. If you really want a ZT though, I feel like the best recommendations for your needs would be a 0450 or 0770.

Well I started those about 2 years ago. Between work and school I never got around to finishing any of them. I tried a scrap piece with an oxy/acel torch. Followed a guy's tutorial on youtube. Matched the cherry red color. Quenched in warm canola oil (or vegetable, I forget) then I baked it in the oven at a pretty low temperature. I don't remember how long, or how hot. The stock can be scratched with the files easily, the hardened one could not, (easily) I never got it to a razor's edge though.

Back then, I had tons of time to kill and actually cut square by square, using a 12" hacksaw with TONS of teeth. My angle grinder should make short work of things now.
>>
>>32941010
Nope just 1095, got it ears ago to make some larger chopping knives... Because they are easier to make and 1095 is easy to heat treat... But just never got to it
>>
>>32941093

I used to have a Spyderco Military. Never quite got the hang of the thumb hole, but really did like the blade. It would be a bit too large for what I do now though.

Kershaw's really sold me on flippers, but the only Spyderco flipper that looks like it would be right for me is out of my price range ($450).

I have been eyeing the Centofante 3, blade shape is pretty much exactly what I like but I also like 1-hand-close knives and that's a traditional lockback.

As far as Benchmade, I'd be torn between the Arcane and the 940/943. The 940/943 is significantly thinner (.41" vs. .48") but has a narrower blade. Both are full grinds on the same thickness blade, which I like.
>tfw all the sub-3" Benchmade knives have fat blades too
Next question: Is s90v enough of an upgrade over s30v to justify a $115 price jump? I can get a G10-handled 940 s30v for $170 vs. $300 for the s90v with carbon fiber handles (which seem to be the only material the s90v blade comes with).

I used to find thumb holes awkward to use, until I got the hang of the middle finger "Spydie" flick... Now I open every knife (besides flippers and autos) that way.

What Spyderco are you looking at? I did not know they had knives nearly that expensive, but I have not been following them closely for the past year.

The Centofante 3 can be operated one hand. I find I would just slide my thumb to the lock bar and then push the blade half closed against my stomach or where ever. It sounds awkward, but it is pretty natural.

Nah the bump up in price is not worth it... That massive bump in price is yes the material, but mostly exclusivity... That being said, I've handled the 943 and the 940, and I would buy the 943.

The Ball/Cage/bar locks (including the Benchmade Axis) are known to sometimes have a little side to side, somethings even the Spyderco Compression. But chances are you will be able to tune a little bit out if you play around with the pivot and body screws a bit, and compensate using some grease on the pivot.

I learned long ago, if it's something you really have to look for to notice, don't let it bother you, because I've never handled a knife that does not have SOME flaw if you look hard enough. Granted I've only played with up to $450 knives.

I was looking at the hidden canyon for the wife when she got into skinning and boning things. Ended up getting her pic related instead because she likes the looks more. I still want to get the benchmade, but this is one of the only buck knives i've ever liked at all. she just did a coyote start to finish for the pelt and it's still as sharp as when i sharpened it immediately after receiving it.

They are the factory replacement micarta scales from kabar dyed with RIT. The BK10 i posted has the same ones but died black. They turned out real nice.

I love the becker series. So easy to customize and play with. The RIT is super easy to use takes no time at all to dye them. Im sure youve noticed the micarta darkens with use, it will still do that after you dye it so dont worry if they come out lighter than you wanted.

Any Bladesmiths in this thread? I'm a hobbyist Blacksmith and since I've started I've always been planning on getting into making knives and eventually swords.

I'm at a point where I'd like to start investing in the tools for Bladesmithing, mostly a decent belt sander and a drill press. Nothing amazing or for professional use but better than the crap you can get from Habor Freight (my friend purchased a tiny 1"x30" belt sander for me as a gift and while it can remove scale just fine it really doesn't have the power for timely stock removal).

Any recommendations for particular tools or brands to look at? Or in the mean time, any particular smithing skills to practice that will make me a good bladesmith in the long run?

Buck is good, but you're absolutely right that they are quick to dull.
But that's not nessessarily a negative trait.
It's because buck uses 420HC stainless steel in the majority of their knives. Quick to dull but it can be sharpened back up to a razor in a flash (even faster with the standard convex grind on buck knives).

Now if you're someone who can't sharpen a blade then sure maybe s30v is for you, so you "never" have to sharpen your knive.. But it will go dull eventually, if you use your knife.
And when it does chances are you will never get it back to factory sharpness.
So maybe you'll pay somebody to sharpen it up for you.

Buck knives are perfect for someone who can't sharpen to learn how.

Zip Tie is a thing. A lot of Spyderco fans do it to make their knife "wave", so it can open as they pull it from their pocket.

Are these pelican cases good size for fixed blades? Got a few that are >12 inches.
>>
>>32949609

I figure when I get a larger pelican I can always use the 1170 to store the high end production/midtech stuff that I'm getting into since it doesn't take up a lot of room in the safe.

>>32949640

I almost went crazy buying benchmades when I started out and I'm glad I didn't because the only model I really like anymore is the (now discontinued) ritter grip. The Rift is special to me and I don't think I'll part with it, but I haven't been super impressed with any of their new stuff.

I also thought about buying a guardian 3 because I don't own any fixed blades and it comes in m390 but I rarely have any need for a fixed blade these days.

Well you can get Pelican cases that will fit swords if you want. But For the price, I would not recommend Pelican cases for fixed blades, unless they are really expensive ones. I keep two 10ish inch fixed blades in my Pelican 1500, because they are my most expensive and happen to have more fragile sheaths. But my other fixedblades I just carry in a bag.
>>
>>32949761
I ain't too worried about being gentle with my fixed blades. Any recommendations on the cheaper side to also work with folders?
>>
>>32949716
I like the 940 and could take it or leave it
But I started out with a mini grip and mini barrage and never carry them anymore to be honest
So if I could sell them for cheap I would

The guardian 3 is a really nice knife to be honest
Good in the hand ( the handles I have on it are a bit agressive for my taste )
Great EDC to be honest.
Horizontal carry leather sheath is nice for carrying but not great overall fiy and finish wise , it rubbed on the blade a bit more than I would like ( he also sells a kydex sheath or there are other options)

It's only something like 6 ounces with the leather sheath and you really honestly don't feel it at all when it's on your belt

The m390 is great
Good customer service
Full flat grind is also nice but I don't think he does that anymore

I really wish I could carry mine more often but stuff on the belt is a no go

If you ever seriously consider wanting one post here and I'll sell ya mine
>>

Just have some swiss army knives, meant to only have one but I bought the Explorer awhile ago.
The slippery slope is real, should I get a Buck knife?
I love the way it looks.

lol good luck, my first pocket knife was a Swiss Army knife, and then a Kershaw Skyline, than a buck knife... and now see pic related >>32938417 ... and that's just my folders, I've got 18 other fixed blades, 3 machetes, and two swords as well.
>>

my first was a tenatious i stole
then my rats
then mini barrage, mini grip
>>
What does /k/ thing of SOGs?
>>
>>32952315
I have an Aegis, and it's pretty great, even after a year of use.
>>
>>32936816
That grip looks terrible. All I can imagine is you slamming your knuckles into something before your blade even cuts material.
>>
>>32952315
SOG's name has been sullied in these threads first by the Pentagon and then by SOGfag.

Shitty Overpriced Garbage

About 10 years ago, (when I was 15) a Bass Pro Shop opened up near me, and had SOG knives and I wanted a Trident more than anything. It was the coolest looking thing ever. Now, I saw one at home depot today and it looks retarded as hell. Damn call of duty. ALSO, I'M GONNA MAKE THE NEXT THREAD FAGGOTS

Yeah not a big fan, of the 40ish folders I own, noon of them are SOGs, that is not to say I've not handled my fair share.

I think some of them are good, like the Flash line is all right... But then they ruin their image with this tacticool bull crap (pic related)

Got a real hard boner for carbonfiber there, eh chief?

Yep I'm a sucker for Carbon Fiber, and more so Titanium... That's why I often carry a CF/Ti knife with my CF/Ti pen, and Ti comb.
>>
>>32953267
That boker is dope as shit. And only $130 on amazon...
Shit. How is it to carry?
>>
>>32943449
>>32929657
Is this a Kershaw Skyline?

It has a cool shape.
>>
>>32952344
But let's be honest SOG is Gerber-tier anyway
>>

A shadow of their former selves.

They've come up with some decent ideas recently, but their build quality has fallen too much for them to be worth it.
>>
>>32954402
Not him but I have the non flipper
It's a really great knife to carry
Other than I'm super used to deep carry knives and I don't have a deep carry clip for it
Super slim
Good blade length. Etc.
>>
ITT everyone owns the same exact knives, the thread
>>
>>32956022
I don't, but then again I haven't been here for that long, I haven't been corrupted by the circlejerk. All I have is a Higonokami, an Opinel, a few chink tacticool linerlocks and a Soviet pocket knife on the way, so I'm pretty much at the beginning.

I'll probably never own the knives most of the people here have, the Spydercos, Benchmades, Bökers, not because I'm poor, but I like traditional and ethnic knives better than tactical operator knives. Too bad handmade slipjoints by traditional craftsmen are costly as fuck.

Good news, anon, you can join us fags that collect svords, mudbugs, case, GEC, and other old fashion pocket knives.

Maybe, those are good traditional knives but kinda too "American" for my taste. I'm more into Yuropoor knives that are more about decoration, than utility, or something like that, pic is what I mean.
>>
>>32954402
Not this one. This particular one is only on bladeHQ, it is called the Tuxedo Kwaiken, the diference is it has a Titanium frame, bolsters, and pocket clip. They are like $165ish if still for sale.

But the I also own other Kwaikens (pic related) and they are all worth it.

Who else owns an Al Mar, or a Kanetsune Nishiki, or a Brous Blades Sniper, or a Spyderco Junior/Ti Military/Tuff, or a Tuxedo Kwaiken, or a Tapio Wirkkala Puukko, or a Cold Steel San Mia Recon Tanto, or a Gavko EDC/T-rex, or a Rock Creek Nyala/Pronghorn Skinner, and I'm gonna stop listing.

These are all knives I've posted on this or past KTG that I've not seen anyone else with. Although I would love it if others had these knives, because then we could share our specific thoughts on them.

I bought it years back when they were in production, but from a YouTuber who made custom scales. It was actually my first Spyderco and my first $100+ knife.
