So does the cartridge jump rearward a few thousandths of an inch to mate with the bolt-face after detonation occurs? If so I presume it "sticks" in place (from the pressure) temporarily before the extraction process occurs?

It's impossible for the firing pin to protrude just far enough to get contact with the case head at the same time the firing pin is detonating the primer, there will always be some distance between the two, for one reason because of variations in cartridge primer depth.

The cartridge must stretch or slide rearward to mate with the bolt-face a thousanth or three. It could be as much as 30 or 40 thou. for all I know.

The alternative is for there to be a slight delay between the firing pin punching the primer and detonation, and in the delay the bolt moving forward fast enough to mate perfectly.
