I recently read Larry Bond's novel vortex and he talked about the South African G5 being like top tier artillery. This book took place in the 80s-90s so the American equivalent at the time would have been the M198. Is this an accurate statement or was Larry strokeing south Africa's cock? Also general artillery thread.

It had Canadian artillery magic from Gerald Bull.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GC-45_howitzer

>"The Canadian GC-45 was selected as the baseline howitzer from which to commence indigenous development.[4] Armscor procured barrels, 30,000 rounds and design specifications for the GC-45 from Gerald Bull. One of the GC-45 test pieces was mounted on a U.S. 155mm M59 carriage – and a further six GC-45s had changes made to internal ballistics, barrel construction and carriage and cradle fixtures, to become the prototype models eventually leading to the G5. "

trash for decades. America gets away with it because we have complete air dominance and fight retards
>>
>>32926847
True but I'm talking about it as a firing platoform itself. At one point in the book they where on rails and fortified in table mountain overlooking Cape Town and BTFO rebels. How acurate are these compared to other pieces. Pic related it's the mountain they where in
>>
>>32927033
Remember the context of which the G5 was adapted. The South Africans were fighting commies supplied by the Soviets in the Namibian and Angolan bush and needed a piece that could compete with whatever the Soviets were handing out. The G5 was an artillery platform they could adapt while under a heavy UN arms embargo. The G5 was also much better than the WWII relics the SADF went into the conflict with. It was a good piece but the G6 which was adapted in 1987 is a much better evolution of it. The G6 is self propelled and has a better fit with the South African method of mobile warfare inspired by the Boer Commandos.

The one thing that sets the Saffrican Gerald Bull pieces apart from the rest are the ERFB rounds and the rifling designed to accommodate them.
ERFB(extended range, full bore) rounds have finlike teeth that mate to the grooves of the corresponding barrel. There's an upside and a downside to this. ERFB allowed extended range performance compared to comparable non-ERFB cannons. But it was also less accurate than standard round shells with a driving band. I don't know about standard shells in an ERFB barrel. Whatever the accuracy penalty was, G5 and G6 have nonetheless proved themselves in battle, so they must be decent pieces.

Even the special forces have their own special hardware. South Africa has a massive auto and truck industry so there's a lot of wheeled engineering and manufacturing knowledge in the country.

The neato thing about embargos is that it drives a creative domestic manufacturing base and in some ways has the opposite desired effect. Much of the SANDF hardware was years ahead of the competition and built for a fraction of the cost.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. The SANDF does not recruit. They test with many applicants turned away. With just about 50k members, they can afford to be picky about who gets in. The testing is held once a year and you may not get your choice of service.

oops, wrong photos. That was the WWII tower. These are the land mounted ship guns looking over Algoa bay. There was a very real threat that the Germans would leave Namibia and try and take South Africa during WWII.

Different guy here, but by the early 80's towed artillery was obsolete due to computers of the era being able to compute counterbattery fire faster than all but the most professional and well-trained artillery crews could scoot.

Shoot n' scoot has been the standard practice since around the end of Vietnam, and it worked pretty fucking well against people having to compute the back azimuth by hand, but those days are long gone.
>mfw in my mid-30's
>mfw towed artillery was obsolete for full-scale warfare before I was born
It's great for COIN though since you can build semi-permanent emplacements with nigh impunity, which is one of 2 reasons the US keeps it around still
>the other is it's far more airmobile and in many cases air droppable than SPG's

Did someone say towed artillery? Yeah, I go some photos of that too.

The interesting thing with towing is that is unpowered weight behind you. You really need roads or flat terrain to move with any speed. While the Kalahari is flat, much of southern africa is sandy dunes and rocky slopes. Not the places you want to tow behind a few tons.
