The Colt 1900 was one of Brownings first giant leaps in handgun designs and served as the cornerstone to the eventual development of the unforgettable 1911.

Introduced along with the .38 caliber it was chambered in around the turn of the century, it incorporated many design features that can be found in nearly every handgun on the market today. Production ran from 1900 to 1902 with 4,274 models being made.

As with most of Brownings designs, its absurdly simple. Taking it apart requires very little tools or time. Keep note of how familiar some of these parts look to parts found in the later 1911.

The most distinguishable feature of the 1900 was the rear sight safety. It was flipped up and down to block the firing pin.

Later models phased this out and included new features. They are designated the 1902, 1903 and 1905.

Hi-Point is the most aesthetic Browning design, all 1911 nostalgia aside.

The major advantage the 1900 offered was a full length slide that completely enclosed the barrel. Unlike others during the time that had various locking blocks and bolts that locked into the frame. This enabled a longer barrel in a smaller weapon.

The 1900 also locked up fully into the slide. The front lug area here was changed to a bushing with the 1911.
>>
File: IMAG2537.jpg (1MB, 2688x1520px) Image search: [Google]
IMAG2537.jpg
1MB, 2688x1520px
Disassembly begins with pulling the slide back about half an inch and inserting a paperclip or something similar into a small hole on the bottom of the dust cover.

This captures the recoil spring and allows the slide to move without tension.
>>

With tension off the slide a small tab is pressed out from the side.

Now the slide can be pulled off the back of the frame.

Locking lugs on the barrel look familiar?

The locking lugs on the upper part of the barrel and in the slide are exactly the same setup as the 1911.

Disconector and ejector, again very similar to the 1911.

The 1900 did have a feed ramp on the barrel. Browning later incorporated it into the frame with the introduction of the .45ACP round in the 1905 and eventually 1911.

The barrel is still fixed to the frame at this point.

These two pins need to be driven out to remove it.

IMAG2548.jpg
3MB, 2688x1520px
Here's another neat feature, twin barrel links.

The barrel is always parallel to the slide. The 1911 simplified this design and used only one link at the rear, allowing the barrel to pivot.

Again, something somewhat looking like a 1911.

The guide rod was later reversed and rested against the barrel link on the 1911.

The pin that holds the mag release in also holds the sear spring in alignment to the sear.

IMAG2557.jpg

Like the 1911, the 1900 sear spring has several fingers that put tension on the sear, disconector and trigger.

IMAG2562.jpg
2MB, 2688x1520px
Lastly the hammer, disconector and sear.

The disconector is almost an exact copy of the one found in a 1911, as in how the hammer and sear interact.

Hard to improve on something that great from the beginning.

I have. It's extremely flat shooting and the trigger is fantastic. Sight picture sucks big time with the tiny rear sight that has to be flipped up.

YES.

BOTH.

Naw, whatever you want to do, tovarisch. This is a great thread, any more contributions would be awesome.

Personally I'm generally drawn to old stuff, and tracing the engineering/mechanical heritage of modern designs, just like this thread, but gawd I'd love to see dem sexy MP5s, too. Anything, Boof. Keep doing this and you can do no wrong.

interdasting. i didn't know anyone made HSS indexables. looks a like a good setup when i get my mini-lathe installed.

>>
>>32917787
Thanks for response!
I would be interested in either really. I've been interested in guns for years and work at the gun counter in a sporting goods store (only deals with new firearms though so I almost never see really old stuff unless I have some customer bringing in an old gun looking for a holster).
After seeing some of the guns on here I'm starting to get interested in milsurp weapons but don't know where to start.
Also, I want to take advantage of the sales associate discounts some of the firearm manufacturers offer while I'm still working there!! ;)

Really doe, don't use shop rags on guns you give a fuck about. Even 'new' ones are usually commercially used ones that have been power washed and usually have metal chips caught in the weave. The kids in the shop always use these things as snot rags until they slice their fucking nostrils open.

The SD isn't mine, I no longer have it to take any photos. I was trialing it as a rental gun and I found it to be too much maintenance. I stuck with a standard MP5 and I can do a thread about it sometime. Especially now that it's got a four position pack, because a fucking HK burst pack is the very definition of clusterfuck.

As well as these, but I think I already did a thread about them.

Unless you live in Owatonna, in which case, why are you even asking.

Was actually just there yesterday, visiting my Mom at Mayo, and was driving through owatonna and had to stop. Almost went home with another SKS.

What would have been the best way to carry it?
hammer back and sight safety down, so you just have to flip the safety up?
hammer down and sight safety up, so you just have to cock the hammer?
or chamber empty safety off so you just have to rack the slide?

As much as I live the 1900 if I had to choose a gun from that time I'd pick a luger. The grip safety, thumb safety, and button mag release are huge advantages.
georg luger really had a near perfect design from the get go.
