Yeah, I've laughed about them as much as the next guy, but the truth is they aren't bad guns other than the low capacity and the mag release on bottom. I have about a half dozen handguns, the Hi-Point isn't my concealed carry piece but ends up getting taken with me almost everywhere. Gets thrown in the tool box, the tackle box, the glove box, center console, any random spot in the boat, whatever. It has never failed to fire, it's pretty accurate, and I won't be heartbroken if it gets pitched overboard, stolen, or damaged. I'm a big guy, so it fits my hands well and does feel fine to shoot, but it's a big brick of a gun. It probably wouldn't even seem like a cheap gun if it weren't for that weird little floppy slide lock (but that works fine too.) Disassembly is a bit of a pain but so far I haven't had to take it apart - I just hose some CLP down the barrel, run a boresnake or patch, and wipe it off.

My dad got me a Hi-Point too, It's not the prettiest or the best gun, but it's fun to look into the safe and see it stick out like a sore thumb. It makes me smile and it still makes me remember how excited he was to give me it when I had turned 18. Something like that may not be the best thing but don't look a gift horse in a the mouth, especially from your dad. You gotta learn to cherish these memories since one day that's all that is gonna be left of your dad.

I had a JHP years ago, was pretty fun. As a straight blowback, they are susceptible to limp-wristing, but as long as you keep a good grip they're fine. Only issues I had with it was what appeared to be a bad magazine. Mailed it to Hi-Point and they sent me a new one and a hat.
