Afternoon Gents,

Im looking for my first pistol and Im in a bind about being frugal or not right off the bat.
Here you will see a Ruger and a Taurus, two affordable guns that a coworker recommended to me.
The other two are a Shield and the new M&P2.0.

Granted I do like the M&P the most, but I'm also cheap and want to play it safe it the Taurus.

What do you all recommend I do for my first pistol?

Also, I have a Concealed permit as well cause why not to help in the advice.
>>

Don't get that Ruger it's a POS, the Taurus is a good gun though.

Go try them out at a range. Everyone has different opinions when it comes to what is most comfortable or what shoots the best. I've got a Ruger 9e and I think it's a great pistol. Amazing for the price.

If you're looking for CC you can also consider the SR9C. Some people don't like it because of the manual safety or loaded chamber indicator, but if it doesn't bother you it's a great little pistol.
>>
>>32905983
Just get a glock 19 and call it a day. You'll develop deeper personal tastes and preferences later, but for the time, you should pick a common option that will help you learn shooting.

You can grow to be a huge collector with a billion fancy guns, but you'll never look back and say that the glock 19 was awful.
>>
>>32906056
This

And if you really line the S&W and get the Taurus, you'll just end up wanting to get the M&P later.
I've heard some places are selling the first gen M&P's cheap since the 2.0 was released.
>>
>>32906402
Yea, I saw the M&P going for a fairly good used price.
But reading about the steel reinforced forend and the better locking mechanisms for loading made it very tempting to go 2.0

I took the time to shoot all but the Taurus last time I went out.
This was before I knew about the G2 and what it had to offer.
Got to say, the Ruger was pretty solid, but the M&P just felt good with those changeable grips.

I don't know much about S&W, so I don't know how important those things are. But one thing to keep in mind is that the M&P series was widely popular, and I haven't heard of many failures because the original pistols didn't have those things. They've been working fine so far, and they will keep working fine.

Manufacturers tend to overstate how important new developments are. They need to give people a reason to want whatever the newest product is over what they already have.
>>
>>32906593
That's good. I'd say give it another try with the G2 to really help you make up your mind.

I don't know if you've heard the phrase or not: but buy once, cry once. If there's something you clearly prefer, it's usually better to go with it (within reason, don't go buy a ferrari because you don't care for camrys). Being frugal has it's place, but there are times where being frugal can waste more money than going with the more expensive option in the first place.

So we can give tips and suggestions, but at the end of the day you know your mind better than any of us.
>>
>>32905983
The Ruger SR's are tits, except the base duty size 9 and 40. The compacts have the good trigger they're known for. The 9E is supposed to have the updated compact triggers but I haven't used one.

The MP is also a pretty solid choice. You can grab the 1.0 at a low cost right now with all the police trade-ins. They will have the best sights of those 4 for sure. I have mixed feelings on the Shield. It could probably stand to have a shorter grip considering it's a subcompact and the triggers won't impress you. The SD9VE's are being sold at Taurus-cheap prices right now but that's the only reason I'd recommend one. At $250 it's a great bargain for a reliable pistol.

You do not "play it safe" with a Taurus, you "roll the dice" for a $50 discount. Pick one of the first two companies if you actually want a decent warranty.

I meant new Gen 1 guns, but I guess the used ones would have a good price to.
I can understand wanting to go ahead and get the 2.0. If the full sized M&P2.0 trigger is like the trigger on the 45 Shield I've looked at then it is VERY different from the first generation.
>>
>>32907275
I really like the trigger on my 45 shield. Not bad at all for a carry gun.

I trust my life to a HK usp .45 w/ 230gr Winchester Ranger +P jhp.
You can poke holes with a 9mm all day, Id prefer a well made hand cannon
>>
I bought a Taurus PT111 G2 yesterday for $200. 12 shot 9mm. Takes 18 round Kanik mags and 20 round Sig P228-9 9mm mags. Good 22 ounce CCH gun. The quality is surprisingly good. Hickok 45 review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MH3tJrK2ma4

Glock 19.

If it's good enough for the police, and military, it's good enough for you.
>>
>>32905983
Taurus can fuck up a S&W revolver clone. Are you going to trust 'em to not fuck up an auto? I wouldn't touch a Taurus with a 20-meter cattle prod.
>>
>>32907476
It wasn't good enough for the military. That's why they picked the Sig.
>>
>>32907091
The original release full sizes had stiffer trigger assemblies and the safeties cut into some people's thumbs. Something might have changed after the first year recall. The company claimed they were the same but retroactively acknowledged they weren't when the 45 and E got announced. The 9c and 40c have the same triggers. Some people complain about early grit but a good lube and washout really helps.

Smith & Wesson M&P9 2.0
Glock 19
Walther PPQ
Sig P320

My first gun was a Glock 19. Loved it as it was my first, shot the hell out of it for 3 years, got a raise and decided to buy another gun. Bought the PPQ and loved the stock trigger. Ended up wanting to change the stock trigger on the Glock but ended up carrying the PPQ. The Sig P320 was released and loved how you can change the frame. Ended up carrying a compact version of the P320. I love the quality of the gun and the trigger is great.

The M&P 2.0 just came out and I thought about buying it, but I think I enjoy the triggers on the PPQ and P320 more (which means more carry time).

The CZ P10C is coming out this year and I love the quality of CZ's so I'll buy that when available.

I believe the Walther PPQ is the most affordable for now. Although it did get a little price increase.
>>

The P320 doesn't have a safety either. It will now for the military version, but Glock would have gone the same.
>>
>>32907628
Glock has produced pistols for contracts with manual safeties.
>>
Of your 4 choices OP I'd avoid the Taurus unless its all you can afford. I had a Millenium Pro (previous gen) and it was actually a very good gun for the price. It was nicely accurate and the only reliability problem I had was with cheap steel case. I also loved the ergonomics for my manlet hands. But the trigger sucks bags of dickss. The break isn't horrendous but it has about a mile of slack on it. If it is all you can afford it is a good choice, but I'd save up for one of the other options

Also dont listen to the Taurus memes, atleast with the PT111 series. It is Taurus most refined polymer guns, and I have only heard good things about them from people I know.
>>
>>32906019
That's how you get buyer's remorse.

>>32907476

Get an M&P 9 or a Glock 19 as your first gun if you want striker fired.

Taurus and Ruger striker guns are garbage don't waste your time with them. If you are that poor however you might take a look at a Makarov or P-64 since they are even cheaper but better built and better to learn to shoot with.

The Sig P320 is another good bet. The Army only spent $17mil to prove it was better than the Glock. There will be huge aftermarket since this will be the new US Joint pistol.

The other good bet is the Glock 19. It is pretty universal across the police and civilian market.

As another anon mentioned, get a good pistol now, shoot the shit out of it, and learn what your personal preferences are down the road.

Do not waste your money on a Taurus or M&P.

>>32907812

They are NOT cheap enough for how shitty they are. He would literally be better off with a Makarov or he could just buy an M&P or a glock for about the same.

If they were like $425 MSRP then MAYBE but they are over $100 overpriced and they're fucking rugers so who knows when they will cease being produced.

They also will not hold resale value as well as a glock or M&P or Makarov.

A lot more goes into making a gun shitty than 'it didn't explode in the 200rnds my poorfag ass could afford to shoot through it in the last year and a half', okay.

Ruger is a large step up in quality from Taurus, don't listen to anyone who says otherwise. Their centerfire pistols have always been rather unremarkable, but serviceable.

Since you're new to guns consider getting a model with a thumb safety, whatever you decide to get. This will trigger /k/ but striker pistols like Glocks with no thumb safeties are an awful choice for a novice...especially for concealed carry.

Just bought an M&P 2.0.

As a long time user of the M&P series of pistols and being an owner of three Glocks (g19, g43 and g17), I prefer the M&P line for ergos.

You can read about or watch videos on all the new """""improvements""""", but the changes on the 2.0 are really only aesthetic as far as I'm concerned - I wouldn't say there was anything wrong with the original M&P models except the shit trigger. I'd even call the 2.0 trigger a shit trigger, but it's a marginal improvement over the original. Aside from that, it's got steel throughout the length of the frame, has those new dumb little serrations on the slide, stippling on the grip is more similar to that of a Glock, it's got a wider rail and has had some weight trimmed off the slide. The most significant change is the slide lock. It's got no downward retention and must slide up or down over a detent to remain in the up or down position. All this means is that when you take the gun apart, you have to remember to push the slide lock down before you push the slide into place.

>TL;DR: M&P's are fantastic, reliable, accurate pistols - but you have to replace that trigger. The M2.0 doesn't offer anything over the original except a "tweener" backstrap which is sized somewhere between medium and large, so buy the cheapest one you can find.

Also, tombstone tactical (Google it, I'm on my phone) was selling them for 419 as recently as last week when I got mine.

Firstly you have to fo handle, and possibly shoot those guns at a rental range. With that being said, I prefer the Shield out of your list. Its almost summer time which means it will be a bit of a pain in the ass sweating all over your bigger handguns as you CC it, especially if you live in a humid place. I almost went with the Shield but ultimately preferred the Glock 43 since it ultimately worked better (for me). Remember you have to make the decision for yourself no matter what a bunch of faggots on a chinese cartoon image board says. Find the gun that works well for you and stick by it.

The MA compliant P320s with thumb safeties have been out there for awhile now, though they seem somewhat rare. Thumb safeties aside, I imagine having to dry fire to disassemble is another highly undesirable feature in a general issue military sidearm. If they had to pick a striker pistol, I guess the P320 was the best choice of the submitted guns.
