but small portable roll film cameras did exist in 1914 as did hand cranked amateur cine cameras like the Pathe 28mm format(think 16mm before 16mm) which was fairly small and portable with a 400ft mag

Indeed it is, they were used quite a lot by Daimler ACs in NW Europe as they gave them the potential to knock out German armour especially at short range, in case the recce troop blundered into a StuG or Pz IV in the course of scouting.
