Just got my CHL and i'm looking for some carry ammo to put in my 9mm S&W Shield.
I hear a lot of great things about 127gr HST +P but my local gun store told me that I should look into hollow points that are filled like Hornady Critical Defence because the plastic "tip" apparently makes expansion more reliable when dealing with more clothing layers. What's your take on "filled" hollow point ammunition? Does it actually help with expansion or is it just some gimmicky shit?

Why do you want ammo that expands, like hollow points?
Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot, Winchester Ranger T, all good stuff and are well proven. Did they happen to sell the Hornady at their store?
>>32898673
isn't overpenetration a concern when using non-hollow point ammo?
>>32898696
they did, but they also listed a bunch of other brands that they didn't carry as well. Also, the grain count was like 115 or something concerningly low for some reason.

Literally, anon: Hornady XTP A#1. Everything else is second. FTX Critical Duty/Defense a shit.

Well no, but if you think it is, wouldn't the better solution be to just use less powerful loads and lighter recoil springs?
There's certainly no reason to use +P ammo if you want LESS penetration.

<red flag>

less reliable*
>>32898649
147gr HST for your Shield.

>There's certainly no reason to use +P ammo if you want LESS penetration.
Except, you know, hollow points need a minimum speed to expand. Without that speed they don't expand and so take longer to decelerate.
>>32898756
why 147gr over 124gr? should I skip out on +p too?
>>32898746
yeah I got the red flag too, but I was still interested in other people's thoughts about "filled" hollowpoints. Care to elaborate on how it makes it less reliable than non-filled?

>Shield 9
Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P Short Barrel
>>32898772
Are you actually implying that non +P rounds won't expand because they aren't going fast enough?
>>32898785
This seems to be the case with some HP loads in ballistic gel
>>32898794
I've never heard of a hollow point that doesn't work if 150 fps less than normal at the muzzle.
Sounds like something hollowcucks would do tho.
Look up the ammo test done by lucky gunner. Actual data.
Inb4 /k/ gets btfo that the load they parrot and don't actually have because they don't carry a gun doesn't expand for shit
>>32898819
oh this is really cool! So i'm on the 9mm ballistic test results page, what am I mainly looking for?
pic related seemed to stand out the most to me, but outside of penetration I'm not 100% sure what I should be looking for
>>32898649
hst expansion is quite reliable
>>32898743
ignore this idiot op
>>32898777
The general rule of thumb is you should look for the heaviest bullet that works in your gun (to maximize penetration and tissue damage) and that also will expand reliably. 147 HST standard pressure works very well out of full size as well as compact guns, honestly no reason to go with +P.
Unless you have a serious need to penetrate thru barriers, 147 HST is pretty much the best round available today. If you need barrier penetration, you'd have to look at bonded bullets like the speer gold dot.
>>32898737
I agree with this other than the shit about critical duty/defense. They aren't bad, but I prefer XTPs because they are much more accurate through all of my guns and they tend to penetrate more than duty/defense.
>>32898819
Lucky gunned uses clear gel therefore rendering anything they say false.
>>32899027
HSTs are sexy I want one with a hollow point that comfortably fit my dick!
>inb4 22lr
What about those Lehigh defense rounds that look like a screwdriver tip, or the copper resin ones that look similar but have just three points?

The hornady is good but i'd just go for 124gr HST for their proven reliability and consistency. You can get a 50rd box on targetsportsusa for $20. Don't buy the ammo at box stores, $1 vs .40c/rd
>>32898737
>Hornady XTP
Hornady XTP is not the best, it is meh.
>>32899027
Heavier bullets penetrate less anon. (assuming all other factors remain the same)
>>32898649
Hst and Speer gold dots seem to be the most common, and well liked, but there are others out there. Just do a little research first.
>>32898696
Just get one of these and ignore the plastic fad ammos like guard dogs, unless you like paying an extra $7 for 20 plastic tip bullets.
>>32898673
Lethality of handgun rounds depends on the wound channel width.
>>32898737
>>32902609
You XTP is a glorified FMJ - and since it has such shitty expansion, the SD loads using that bullet tend to be soft and weak to keep them from over penetrating.
Horandy loads suck ass and we all know it.
>>32898743
FMJs overpenetrate like mad, even in smaller calibers. A 9mm fmj can easily have enough energy to pass through a second person at close range.
i like the 300gr XTP.
>>32898649
I use Speer gold dot - short barrel
>>32902709
Do you think a DE L5 would be a piratical HD gun or just bragging piece.
>>32902776
bragging piece lightened to comply with NY laws. still my favorite caliber.
