/k/, what kind of optics do you use and what would you suggest for a new shooter?

I recently ordered all the stuff necessary to build my AR, now I'm looking at optics. I've got $500 budgeted out for one right now, but I'd like to get some opinions first. Should I just get a cheap optics and get a nicer one later, or should I just save up until I can afford a really nice one?

$500 is more than enough for a solid red dot like the Aimpoint PRO or Trijicon MRO.

Learn to shoot with iron sights first
>>

If you haven't used a red dot before you should check out one in person before buying one.

If you have astigmatism it will look like a burst or a comet. You may not know you have astigmatism until you try using a dot. I learned the hard way.

I would start with iron sights and go from there. I have used many optics ranging from red dots, etched reticule fixed, low power variable and high power variable. I really like my 2.5x etched Primary Arms optic. It's a poor man's acog.

1-6 SE or PA 1-8 on an ADM mount. Or a PA-advanced micro.

save up and get exactly what you want.
just be sure to do some research (hands on experience is obviously preferred) to make sure whatever it is really is what you want.
>pic unrelated

Depending on how severe it is, it's not so bad. I put mine at a dimmer setting and the spikiness goes away.
>>
I slapped a Vortex Strike Eagle on my first ar.
No complaints. Think I got it for 330 maybe? I looked at red dot sghts first cause of muh call of duty, but I don't like them.

I'd say get something like a 1-4 or 1-6 magnification. You'll want it when you're at the range and you can always dial it down to 1x if you want.
>>
I shoot a Trijicon ACOG (at work).

I owned a ACOG before it was work.

I like ACOG. It work good.

Get what you want.

This goes across the board for more than just optics. Don't get something junky just because you're starting out but don't spend more just to spend. Get what you want and only want.

iron sights.
>>
>>32893891
Do you have a light? If you don't buy a good light first.

You can shoot with irons but you can't see in the dark.
>>
>>32893891
I use an ACOG and an eotech EXPS3-0.

Either one is great for new shooters, set it and forget it. Entry level Eotech is all you could afford on $500 though. It's the best reticle of any not magnified optic and the holographic HUD technology is the same used in the display for fighter jets.

People will talk mad shit about them but the new ones don't have problems. Holographic display >>>> reflective glass with red led of other "dot" sights.

Thanks for all the good info guys. I live in a small town now, but I'm going to visit my cousin in a big city soon. I'll see if I can't get any hands on experience while I'm there.

I'm not sure if it's a really good light, but my neighbor is giving me this for $20. It seems lightly used and pretty bright.

This is the cheapest I would recommend. Surefire doesn't recommend them for weapon mounted lights but EAG uses them on their fleet rifles with great success.

63 USD for 300 lumens.

If you have standard handguards like in the OP pic you can get the combo deal with IWCs mount for 99

Yes they do, Eotech never fixed their thermal drift issues. So if you're ok with a 4 MOA shift if you keep your optic in a car during summer, more power to ya, retard.
