Anywhere from $5 mall ninja stuff to $2k "good quality but you could use this for 2-8 decent guns" sword. Cold steel swords are about the same price as your average AR-15.

Making it yourself will be more effort and cost than a single time buy, given the necessity for equipment, materials, and time need to be put into making one. However, the experience and potential to make a shit ton of different sword styles by yourself will save you pride and money.

What? They're like 2-300 dollars.

They are, however, the absolute lowest limit of what could be considered a "sword." They're made of decent enough metal to hold an edge and cut stuff, but if you want anything resembling authenticity in craftsmanship and design you're easily looking into the 7k range.

>7k

I meant $700 idk why I'm retarded.

Expect to spend though if you want anything but a wallhanger or a sharpened slab of steel.

There's a lot of variance. You can find decent stuff for a couple hundred bucks on Kult of Athena, or pay a bit more for something from Albion. You can always get something custom made, but there's no way for me to say how much that would cost. If you want something that can actually cut, expect to spend at least $200. Avoid Cold Steel, everything I've seen from them wieghs way too much. Windlass seems to be hit or miss, but I like the saber I got from them.

Okay I'm pretty well reserached on this. I currently own one Katana ($300 Hanwei Raptor, pic Related) and I have a $650 Longsword on the way (Valiant Armoury Rhinelander). And I have a few swordchetes.

The tl:dr of it:
$150ish (be careful)-$400 for entry level.
$400-800ish for mid level
$800-$2,500 for high end European, pretty much limitless for Japanese.

Better answer:

A real sword, first off pretty much HAS TO be made of Carbon steel, no stainless. The normal quality ones are:
Low End: 1045-1055
Mid: 1060-1075, 5160
High End: 6150, L6, T10

But heat treat is almost more important, you are looking for a mono spring temper around 52-55Hrc, and if it is a differential temper you are looking for around 60ish on the edge ant 40-50 on the spine.

Good production brands: Hanwei, Cheness, Ronin Katana, Valiant Armoury, Dynasty Forge, Windlass (caution), Zombie Tools (not historical), Arms & Armor, Citadel (Top self), Albion (top shelf)...

Be ware of: Cold Steel and Dark Sword Armory, they are not "bad" but tend to have problems, be bad for them money, or have just random issues.

The best retailer (US) is Kult Of Athena

And it is worth looking at swordchetes (Sword like but made like a machete) if you just want something to have fun cutting with. They are a lot more durable that a real (historical) sword, and a LOT cheaper. Granted they almost always will be short sword length, rarely with more than a 24 inch blade.

They tend to be around $30-$130. Cold Steel is not good for real swords, but great for Swordchetes, I own two, a Cutlass and Chines War Sword (Pic related). Also Condor makes some more polished ones for $50ish more.

"How long is a piece of string?" is the honest answer.

Also what do you consider "good".

As a general rule, I wold say that you get diminishing returns. A $100 sword is shit, no doubts there at all. A $200 one is vastly better, but still shit. $400? by that point most of those you would find are servicable, they wont fall apart were they used. $800? Better than a 400 dollar sword, but not as much a difference as a 200 to a 400 dollar sword.

Pretty much anything over 500 will be passable. That is, a decent tang, proper steels, and a reasonable fit of parts.

that is not to say a 500 dollar sword is good. its the absolute entry-level.

My area of interest is western, european, medieval arms, japanese or the likes arent my area of knowledge: a well-made, handmade longsword, commercially made, I'd expect to pay at least $800 for - A&A, Albion, etc. A custom made one by a craftsman? I'd expect at least $2000, and that's for a plain one. There is a lot of skill, and a lot of work required to make a sword as a craftsman.

Price if you wanted to make it yourself, and it to be good? Probably in the region of $5000-6000 of equipment, maybe a little less if you outsource the heat-treatment to a commercial plant, and 4-5 years of practice/study/research for 10-15 hours every week will get you there.
