That is completely wrong. Once you hit the treshold where potentially fatal force is allowed (for example: theft of non-trivial worth), german law no longer cares what you use to defend yourself with.

You don't even need the right to bear firearms to use one in self defence. You can disarm a bystander and use his weapon to shoot a thief in the back and it's still self defence and the bystander may not resist.

The reason many people get into trouble for self defence is because they either:
a) Used means not in relation to crime (killing someone for insulting you).
b) Attacking when the attack on their rights has already ceased (shooting a thief that has dropped the stolen goods or a trespasser running away).
c) Saying something stupid to the judge that makes it clear you weren't defending yourself, but just waiting for an excuse to commit violence ("He attacked me so I killed him.")

The "self defence = prison time" is an urban legend in germany propagated by sensationalist media that omits the actual reasons why self defence did not apply in a particular case. It's really effective in killing off civil courage, something judges actually like and encourage people to.
