Hello, Pierre
F-35A > F-35C > F-35B >other shit
F-16XL
extremely long range
huge load carrying ability
this is the fighter for modern combat for dealing with regional conflicts and far off enemies
really surprised Canada and Australia havent bought this, it would be perfect for their large area of coverage they require
>>32881591
They want twin engines for safety, I do hope they atleast get the CFT's and enhanced engines for the Super Hornets. They bring more badass to those beasts!
The F-16XL is hot as fuck tho, too bad we didn't get them here in Norway for our old Vipers, but I remember there were some kind of a trade off with the delta wing in fighting performance..
>>32882045
>They want twin engines for safety
Except that's just a blatantly wrong meme. The actual numbers put twins at LESS reliable with modern engines.
>>32882143
Really? Is that counting Hornets that operate from carriers, because that in itself is pretty fucking substantial on wear...
>>32882306
Overall based on actual engine failures, which are nowadays pretty rare.
With twins you double the maintenance hours, double the risk of defects and mistakes, and generally in a combat aircraft anything that can disable one will take two. Adjacent pair models can see catastrophic failures cascade to the goo engine, and wide-sets like the F-14 spin out when they experience a sudden thrust imbalance.
>>32881591
Would be a neat thing if they made it a two seater and marketed it as a cheaper F-15E for countries with a lower budget. Seems like the block 60+ took that role with a single seat though
>>32882045
>They want twin engines for safety
That was a meme the Navy came up with after Congress told them to evaluate the LWF contenders. Can't let themselves get caught flying an Air Force plane.
>>32880441
I want to see the BATR cue
>>32882368
The only fighter that comes close to the wide Tomcat is the F-15, and it ain't that bad on the Eagle. The Hornet's engines are very close and I've never heard of a problem like spin on F-18's.
Anyway there was plenty of Hornets that made it back on one engine after taking a missile up the ass during Desert storm.
Either way, they want twin engines, the XL is long dead and they operate Hornets.
Another point is the Hornets landing gear and general ruggidness from carrier design, makes them able to operate from roads and very short runways with cables..
>>32882467
A factor was also low speed handling, and the need for a heavier frame.
>>32880728
Lol now you're just trying too hard. Your bait needs to be more subtle.

Been thinking about bases recently and asking around the squadron and now asking you. How do you like SJ? Do you live here or up in Raleigh? Sounds like most single dudes live up there. I just don't know how that will be with a normal ops day if it is like the normal 10-12 in the b-course and UPT. Right now I'm leaning Lakenheath #1 then tied Mountain Home and SJ but so far I like living in this region and the people in the town are really nice.
>>32883047
SJ wasn't my first choice, but it's not bad. one of the best things about the Mudhen is there's no bad bases. the level of talent is amazing if you get out to Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill too, and unlike at Del Rio the girls are all in grad school or nurses, not "i'm 27 and getting my cosmetology license".
i'm living in town but probably moving out eventually based on life stuff. yeah i put in 10-12 hour days, but dudes will carpool to/from Raleigh so you only drive maybe 1x/wk. like everything, it depends. while you're going through MQ/2FLUG/4FLUG/IPUG it's gonna be annoying as hell to put in a 15 hour day only to hook the ride and have to re-do your boards. but i spend so many weeknights doing nothing in GB and i go to Raleigh on the weekends because otherwise it's just Netflix and PS4 and Brew Works (which is legit, but c'mon... only one bar since the Shamrock's closing). LN is a blast but be prepared for culture shock due to britbongs and wearing poopie suits all the time. MO is fun if you like camping and hiking on the weekends, otherwise you might be bored. my buddies there go off-roading a lot.
anywhere there's nightlife near a Mudhen (except Vegas) it's gonna be about 69 minutes away from the fighter ramp.

>>32883106
Is it true that most pilots are Academy guys? That's the only thing that has me looking more towards the navy for flying instead of the air force.
>>32883128
yes. that's gonna be true for the Navy too. there's fighter pilots from every commissioning source though.
>>32880728
Here we go again
>>32883155
They don't end up having a sort of inside track though, right?
My biggest concern right now is having enough resume filler to appeal, and having a nuclear-physicist-who-practices-neurosurgery-GPA in my non-engineering major, because it seems like the navy and AF both will take a engineer with a 3.3 over an econ/math guy with a 3.6. Is that accurate or no?
>>32883220
academy grads have the best shot of getting a pilot slot. but that only gets your foot in the door. you still have to land the jet, to not make stupid radio calls/take off without clearance, to not go blind after 6.9 seconds of flying tac, to change the radios appropriately, to not overspeed the flaps/gear or over-G the jet, to not no-step for an EP, to pass all your tests, etc. the playing field is fairly level once you get to UPT, but it's decidedly not level to get there.
>>32883259
I still have a ways to go before I get to that point; I'm only a sophomore who still hasn't declared a major. How important is your major for getting picked up? I know technical is preferred, but I think a math/econ major would be fine. As for GPA would anything over a 3.5 put me in good stead?
Thanks for answering my questions btw.
>>32883308
if you're at that point, look into ROTC. that'll up your chances a lot. but you're gonna have to be pretty rock star in order to get picked up for field training (or whatever the NROTC equivalent is) because you're gonna be trying to take a slot that a detachment is giving out to someone they've known for 2 years. i think you might compete after two years as a sophomore (so your senior year) but i'm not 100% sure.
yeah, with that major a >3.5 would be money.
>>32883346
Sadly, my school doesn't have ROTC beyond Army. Thought about how I could start a NROTC program, but don't know how I would start to do that.
Glad to hear that my major is okay.
>>32880801

>>32883412
>cross-town to a local NROTC detachment.
To see if there's an affiliate program? I'll definitely look into that. If I can make it work it'll be better than going OCS.
Thanks for your help man, really appreciate it.
What makes the Super Bug superior to the F-15E in terms of multi-role capability? I do know many of the Super Hornets have AESA, not sure about the Strike Eagles.
>>32883508
I think the price mainly, in terms of pure capability the SE got the Hornets beat for the most part.
I've heard the Eagles have the edge up high, and Hornets down low in dogfights.
>>32883395
With a greatly increased difficulty level from the 'standard' Red Flag.
>>32883572
>>32883508
Well bug can be launched off carriers, for one.
Also, F-15 has gofast mode for interception, unlike bug (2.5 compared to 1.8). The main idea behind the F-15 was to get into the air, fly far and fast in a straight line, shoot at incoming bombers, then fly back--once upon a time. That's why Singapore, Japan, Israel, and South Korea have a bunch of them.
But now when everybody can carry 1000lb JDAMs, yeah, I guess there isn't much difference.

>>32880728
The official specs for new planes are rather suspect. For example, stories from their pilots readily show that the Raptor's t/w is far better than the official numbers claim.
Viper
Answer is always Viper
>>32884963
Most likely an F-15C or F-16C. There were also some contracted Red Air planes, which likely means Draken International A-4 Skyhawks (the Skyhawks are kitted to electronically simulate more advanced aircraft), although it's possible (but less likely) that they could have also been privately owned Su-27s.

It's pretty fucking insane how fast that fucker goes out of sight
The official 35,000lbs of thrust the f119 (f22) engines are rated for is bullshit
>>32885943
Twin engined jets are inherently less reliable.
Why?
Because when 1 engine fails, there is a 87% chance it will take the 2nd engine with it.(source: airforce study)
You now have TWICE as many parts that can fail and a huge chance you won't be able to fly back on 1.
That being said, the massive thrust of 2 engines is undeniable and the engines don't fail that often.
If you can provide enough thrust with 1 engine, that's the best choice.
>>32886081
>>32885810
Something a lot of people forgot to copy over or fail to read is the ">" prefix or "+" suffix. The official specs for the F119 engine don't state it puts out 35,000lbf of thrust, they state it puts out >35,000lbf.
>>32886142
>there is a 87% chance it will take the 2nd engine with it.(source: airforce study)
link?
>>32886199
It's not just the thrust; the plane is probably a lot lighter than the claimed numbers as well.
>>32881591
>really surprised Canada and Australia havent bought this
You must not be Canadian, it is no way surprising we have not bought anything in what feels like eons here. It is however embarrassing and shameful.
>>32886332
Eh, weight is one of those things that have to be reported correctly - there are official weigh ins that give to-to-pound figures, although those figures can change over time a little as upgrades, etc are made. Radars on the other hand are significantly underrated; the F-22 was officially stated to have >1500 T/R modules, in reality it has just under 2000. The F-35's radar has been stated as having >1000 T/R modules or >1200; in reality it has over 1600.
>>32880441
if rafale can gun f-22 and fa-18 can gun rafale does that mean f-18 is the worlds best fighter
>>32886199
>The official specs for the F119 engine don't state it puts out 35,000lbf of thrust, they state it puts out >35,000lbf.
And you seem to imply you know for sure that this means it has a couple thousands lbf more than that value?
>>32886489
It most certainly does.
Sleep tight Raptor.
>>32886523
Considering the f135 engine is a higher bypass f119 and it makes 42,000 lbs of thrust; the f119 is probably making more than 43K.
(Although the f135 engine has a far more aggressive Reheat)

>>32886142
Anecdotal evidence doesn't count for much, but I have known a lot of people that have lost and engine and landed safely. Having two engines also allows you to do precautionary shutdowns if something starts going wrong.
>>32883508
we're putting AESA in the Strike Eagles now.
>>32886696
yeah dude... it's just frustrating when we've got a whole "fight these dudes then drop bombs rel-targeting JDAMS with Sniper pods then fight our way out" mission planned... and we can't drop below 7k because there's a carrier that nobody's talking to/nobody knew about doing traps in-between us and the shore.
>>32886142
Statistically two engines are less reliable because nowadays most serious mishaps are maintenance related, and two increase the chance of something being overlooked.

>dropping into SHORAD envelope

>when 1 engine fails, there is a 87% chance it will take the 2nd engine with it.(source: airforce study)
In combat when it actually gets hit by something, or due to something malfunctioning, or both...?
Remember, with twin engines in case of an engine failure you always have enough thrust to make it to the site of the crash.
>>32886976
dohohoho

The f135 is the most powerful single engine in production I believe.
I actually weld and assemble the F35 and f22 afterburner section
An engineer told me the f135 could produce over 55,000lbs of thrust in certain seneros. Idk he was telling the truth as most ME. I work with are fucking dumb.
>>32887233
It can SuperCruise acually
Just depends on the definition you go by
It can fly supersonic without using reheat.
>>32886642
Jets generally make their peak thrust down low, and with quite a bit of that coming from fan thrust / bypass.
>>32886523
The F119 would likely make something like 37,000lbf, not >43,000lbf (not including any wartime emergency power settings).
>>32887753
On a test stand at sea level an F135 hit ">50,000lbf". The engines are de-rated to 43,000lbf to give a long lifespan though.

>>32883308
GPA comes first, then ROTC performance, and then major. You'll only have to worry about the major if you're competing with a cadet who is a clone of you.
I say ROTC because if you don't do that I wouldn't fancy your chances regardless of how well you do in school/at OCS. There's (for example) over1500 AFROTC detachments and each one has a few pilot candidates who are rocking it and get first dibs.
If you're interested, contact the nearest ROTC detachment immediately, because the sooner you start, the more time you'll have to improve before going in front of the selection board. Remember that doing ROTC incurs no commitment to serve until after you graduate from Field Training, which is competitive. As a sophomore, you'll have to either do a 2-year or 3-year program instead of a 4-year like most, and trust me, that is a hell of a challenge. But if you want to do it, believe me, you can.
>>32885943
